Aef - Free Forum Software A New Free Forum Software, Open Source, too

Recommended Posts

The new kid on the block has made quite a positive impression with me. I will be converting my existing Forums over to this new, fast, easy to install Forum.

Features include:

News System with articles

ShoutBox

Suggest Framework for usernames while writing PM's

Threaded Mode for topics

Domdrag for reordering Categories, Forums, emoticons (A new feature included for the first time ever in a forum software.)

The features I like about it are the 'included' shoutbox ( simply needs to be activated in the Admin Control Panel), the News feature allows links to News articles for the site, and they 'rotate' the News items. Sort of like Cutenews for Forums. Check out the Features by linking to the AEF WEbsite below. Their Support Forum is also linked below, as is a Demo that I have Hosted on my Xisto account (link below).

The Forum is currently in Version 1.02 with the new version coming out shortly. *edit* aef 103 is now available *edit*

My impression is so positive that I have volunteered to participate in the development of the Forum. I expect to be involved mostly with the HTML and CSS of the Forum.

WHOA!I thought I was having another deja vu. I saw AEF forum in the past and thought "humm that's a nice theme to IP.B" but never checked to see if it was the actual IP.B.Nicely made and thank you for making it open source! I have been searching for an alternative to SMF because it was starting to lack in certain features that the end user would appreciate, i.e. ajax mode or better menu navigation.I will have to give this forum a try for my next project. A local high school is requesting forum that can be used by school's club. SMF was going to be my choice but AEF might be the answer.Have you been testing the stability and security, jlhaslip? I was going to suggest installing as a demo under Annex but since it's not part of Xisto Fantastico! that would not be a good idea at this time. However, I would suggest contacting Fantastico! and see if AEF can be included in their next upgrade. I see some huge potential with this one. (Sorry jlhaslip, I'm always thinking like a marketer--it's a habit)

Ahh I love it it looks really good, the graphics on it I love, the skin is excellent, it works like a chart basically the same way as ipb but the user control panel is easier to navigate. If only the profile's was like IPB 2.2 then it would be perfect hehe. Thanks for sharing I would use this some time! I would give this forum like a 9/10 It is nice but if the profiles was better but no bugs thats a good thing and its better than most forums and it is not bad for a new forum...

Very nice! Ive left a little message with my feedback but ill add some here too. I like the layout of everything, its in the logical place and is similar to other forums so you can easily adapt to using the AEF forum after leaving anther forum, that makes it very easy to use for newbies to this style of forum which is good! signup is also very easy though if i owned it i would want email verification of new users for security and preventing spam, i dont know if this is an option but if it isnt then it should be! the only negative comment i really have is that the avatar space to the left of each post seems a little small, also ive just realised that the textarea where you type a reply is small on the AEF forum, i assume this is s that users with smaller screens can see it all but maybe it could be made bigger by using a percent value that would then allow it to resize to fit bigger or smaller screens?Either way it looks really good and that skin is very corporate i feel and would be very god the mentioned school's website, i think it wouldnt distract users too much.I would definitely use this forum software if i wanted a forum.

Have you been testing the stability and security, jlhaslip?

yes, a little bit... but I would like to have the members here at the Trap play with it a little bit, too. See if they can uncover any loop holes.

I have done a fresh install, and adjusted a couple of small things.

Registration is now required to view certain areas.

No emails are sent to validate the registration, but that feature is available, yes.

To see the (optional) shoutbox, click the quick links (top right) and select shoutbox.

UPDATE August 26, 2007

A new version of the AEF Forum software is now available for Download.

There is also an "upgrade" package to move from version 1.0.2 to the newest version 1.0.3.

Check out the links: http://www.anelectron.com/board/index.php?tid=307

This version of AEF is a themers edition. The following is a list of some of the new features added:

- Theme Registry

This System has been implemented.

Its now very easy to install themes and also remove them. Also a theme can have dynamic features with the help of AEF's Theme Registry System

- JS Simplified

JavaScript has been simplified and we have seperated them in different files to make the AEF Forums work much faster and efficiently.

- JS Dock

A Mac style Dock for easy navigation.(A first from AEF)

You will just love this Dock. (See it at the bottom - Logged In users)

- WYSIWYG Editors

You read it right. AEF now has WYSIWYG Text Editor.

WYSIWYG means What You See Is What You Get. It enables

to write the text with Rich Text formatting.

- Search Engine Optimization for caching by Bots.

If you are upgrading from previous versions of AEF please download AEF 1.0.3 Upgrade Package from the Download Section .

Upgrade Instructions are present in the AEF(1.0.3) Upgrade.

Some features that were left as a provision for future releases have been added.

A lot of Bugs have also been fixed. (Listed below)

We hope you enjoy AEF 1.0.3.

Have Fun!!

Regards,

AEF Team

Download AEF 1.0.3

Features left for future versions (in earlier versions) that were implemented in 1.0.3:

1. Pop-Up Smiley Box - Smileys that dont appear in the Post form will be shown in a AEF DOM Window when clicked on '......' accompanying other Smileys.

2. Theme Uninstallation - Themes can now be uninstalled which was missing in earlier releases.

3. Fixed Shout Box - AEF now has a feature to fix the shoutbox. Otherwise it will use AEF DOM Windows.

Bug Fixed:

1. Admin CP not being accessible in 1.0.2 due to short_open_tags

2. Logout not working in 1.0.2 due to short_open_tags

3. Users website link being relative to Boards Link if no protocol specified

4. Admin Not being allowed to use ACP after editing ADMIN User Group

5. Registry Update Errors if get_magic_quotes_gpc() is enabled

AEF version 1.0.4 is available at the above listed links.

Mostly a couple of bug squashes, with a few additional features, like bbcode in the shoutbox, not a major release.

Next release will (should) be for a Language system so the Owner can use translation files. Ans some w3c/html fixes.

Several new Mods have been written, including a 'Bank' which accumulates 'points' for each posting, etc, similar to the Trap credit system, but different.

Also a New User Mod automatically creates a new Topic when a User registers,

Some pretty cool Themes are coming along, and we are having fun with it.

If you need any further information, check out the Demo Site at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I will be updating to 104 soon, but many of the Tutorials remain current, so use them for AEF 1.0.4 also.
