Michael Moore's Letter To President Bush

Recommended Posts

I don`t actualy know if this has been posted yet but I found it on an other forum I`m on check it out.

Friday, September 2nd, 2005
Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.

Now, that's a satirical letter if I ever saw one ;). I'm really doubtful about the letter's authenticity... I mean, Michael Moore might be very Anti-Bush given to his recent 'Fahrenheit 9/11' but still, you dont' write such a letter to the President of the United States. But the letter is very clear and his stance on Bush's policy is very clearly if not sarcastically stated. Is there any official news regarding this letter? I doubt such a letter would be released to the public by Bush ;).

I think the letter is authentic. I have seen moore's 2 award winning documentary. The choice of words and appraoch sounds moore. Even if it isnt moore, the letter is still great. Although most americans are stupid and fools to believe a president like bush. Well, americans has only a short history struggle for freedom and justice, that explains it.

This does sound like Moore, I respect his opinions but being full of air isn't helping those in need. This was just an open letter, so it'll reach bush, but not via being posted directly to him.

As with sources like this, YOU MUST display where you got the content from, but even better, the original source.

Since many forums have this, they haven't stated the origin of where the information came from and that is quite a bad thing, considering that this material might be copyrighted, although we must assume anything posted on the web is copyrighted now by the original author of the material.

This is where I've tracked it from as being the origin of the letter, Mike's site:
http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

So in future please try to reference this if you can, you'll realise that the address at the bottom that just says http://michaelmoore.com/ in this letter, links back to it's location of origin.

Cheers,

MC

interesting. I heard the governor in New Orleans was making it hard for help to get in there, but I guess being the president he could have done something to get people in there. I hope that governor does not get re-elected to any high position of any kind though.

Why is it that people are so quick to blame Bush (an idiot, I'll grant you that - I never said that I like this guy), but forget about Ray Nagin? You remember him: the mayor of New Orleans who, as the head of the city, was in charge of keeping his citizens informed and safe? Right. Why wasn't he putting his city's evacuation plan into effect? I know the man was informed that a massive hurricane was coming - every radio, TV and newspaper source in the whole region was yammering about Katrina for *days* before the storm hit land. Rita came along a few weeks later; the overwhelming majority of the people in cities and towns in that hurricane's path were long gone before the storm came. They used their evacuation plans. Why didn't New Orleans bother with theirs? Why did I turn on my TV in Texas after the storm hit and see school buses, Greyhounds, city buses, etc. stuck under several feet of water? Would it have been *that* hard to put vehicle-less residents in those and at least gotten them to higher ground, preferably as far inland as possible? Be sure to spread the blame *everywhere* that it belongs. Bush should have done a few things differently, yes, but he's not 100 percent responsible for what happened in Louisiana.

The letter even if authentic was probably never seen by the President, I doubt he really has the time to read **** like that, and even if it did make it to the White House aides would have read it and it probaly ended up in the circular file or ****can like the **** it was .Hope my *'s don't offend, unless you are one of those that is easily offended by just about anything. Micheal Moore is a real idiot that make stuff up and is a socialist, and I am glad to see that the election in Canada really updet the fat slob!

Little lesson from Politics 101:Those yelling the most are usually the ones trying to pass blame away from themselves. That being said, I don't think that disaster planning on the federal level has been great. If NO was a test for the new and improved FEMA...well let's just say "F's" across the board.Unlike say a sudden NBC attack on a major city, the storm was tracked for days. As Sarah said: they had plenty of time to do something about it at the local and state level and failed. However, to me the real lessons is this: The only agency with the ablity to move massive numbers of people and supplies in a short time is the US military. In case of major disasters where either local officals failed or there is a sudden event, we need to seriously think about passing a law that suspends Posse Comtius allowing the Military to be put in charge for a limited and finite period (say 7 days) until Civilian agencies can mobilize and get things set up and then transfer control over to FEMA/DHS over say an additional 7 - 10 day period. FEMA is much better at managing the long term rebuilding than spur of the moment happenings. Say what you want about the military: they are quite effective at logistics and are the only ones with the equipement, manpower, and expertise to do things like build temperary air strips, field medical centers, etc. in a short period of time. Although if I remember my civil defense proceedures, if an NBC was detonated in the US, I believe that a defacto state of war is "declared" and the military could then be deployed within the US and do what ever is needed including suspepention of Habous Corpus and Posse Comitus. I'm in consitutional law 1, so I'm sure I'll learn about this at some point this semester....

Michael Moore may raise valid political points. I certainly thought that Bowling For Columbine was a very interesting piece of investagative documentory journalism. But in the overall left/liberal [both rediculous terms] cause Moore is a hinderence. He is too much of a clown, he is like some kind of Micky Mouse. Farienheit 9/11 made some fairly bizarre claims, too far and too unsurported, although is also had some truths.
