sparx 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 After dominating the search scene on the web, grabbing the monopoly of online usenet viewing and search, making email providers sit up and take notice when GMail was launched, mapping the Earth & the Moon, Google have now debuted their new BETA version of the Instant Messenger which includes the ability to communicate by Voice to a fellow user. It's called Google Talk BETA ( but I might start a trend by shortening it to GTalk ! The client is based on the Jabber Protocol so other clients can connect to GTalk users. A list of common clients that can interface with Google Talk (screenshot from the site): Once again Google have demonstrated a responsibility toward using Open Source / non-proprietary protocols. At first glance it appears functional and what I found sets it apart from other messengers is its small size - 900 KB ! Only Miranda IM is smaller and BTW, it supports the Jabber protocol with the help of a plugin.
hazeshow 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 I don't know ... since they more or less used their Adwords technology for GMail, I do NOT trust them. They offered large Email-accounts but read these Mails. Maybe it's silly, but it's my EMOTIONAL decision to never ever install something that comes from Google, no chat client, no toolbar, no nothing. abhiram 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 Doesn't look too useful. Most of the people use the clients mentioned in the attached pic. Gaim has the added advantage that it can be used in both windows and Linux AND ALSO connects to Yahoo! and MSN. I don't know about the others. From what I've seen in the messenger and on the website, this allows you to connect only to other GTalk (if you like ) users. I don't think I'll be using this one... converting your friends list from one messegner to another one is very painful.

GreetingZ <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You're fogetting that almost every good email provider scan your emails for viruses and spam using very similar techniques. Gmail is no different, except for the fact that they scan for viruses, spam and then to deliver relevant adverts regarding email's content. If you'd read Gmail's "Gmail & Privacy" article, you'll see that the process is entirely automated, so your emails aren't "read" at all. On the subject of instant messaging, I'm really surpirsed by this. When Google bought Picassa, they got Hello, an instant messaging program that also sends pictures. So now they have two instant messaging programs. I think I'm gonna uninstall Hello and give Google Talk a go, it looks pretty good.

But I don't like it that they send me "email-content-generated"-ads, I prefer getting ads generated by a stupid "your-interests"-form or similar. And I would not like "chat-content-generated"-ads, and so I have the feeling - yes it's only a feeling - that I will not install any Google software. finaldesign1405241487 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 Interesting, but as far for now, I'll continue to use gmail, and other email accounts that I have.. I think that e-mail is still one of the leading sistems of global communication.
jcguy 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 This is getting interesting.. Google is becoming more and more like Yahoo! and MSN. Google used to only have a superb search engine, now they're moving into other areas as well like Instant Messaging, just like Yahoo! and MSN. I wonder if Google would become just another Yahoo or MSN.I don't think I'll give Google Talk a try. MSN Messenger works well for me.
solankyno1 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 This is great and much awaited news.I have just downloaded it. As many have written here that they will not change their contacts for messaging I am also in favour of it. But I have download it for giving it a try. At least I should test it because it is from Google the creator of one and only Gmail.

Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 I'll be trying this out tonight probably... I tried it here but dont feel like messing with the proxy server to get it running. Regardless I assume I'll be sticking with msn for the most part unless this is amazingly polished or revolutionary... but who knows.

They offered large Email-accounts but read these Mails. Maybe it's silly, but it's my EMOTIONAL decision to never ever install something that comes from Google, no chat client, no toolbar, no nothing.then dont, use gaim !Anyway... Lets Compare Googles Gmai to Microsofts Hotmail.Adverts:Gmail = small discrete adverts, only adverts that are relevant to your email.your email is about computer hardware, maybe you will get a inpel pentium 4 advert. small discrete.ALSO, Gmail allow you to use SMTP and POP protocols, bypassing the web interface, and all adverts.Hotmail:You are assulted with a random advert, right smack bang in the middle of the welcome page. The inbox has anouther huge banner advert. both on the top, and down theright hand side.Google wins !Lets compare spam email...Hotmail, i get about 30 a day in my inbox, loads more in my spam fp;derGmail, none.Gmail wins again.Storeage space, 1GIG vs 250 megs... Gmail wins again.Ohh, and who remmebers that time someone found an URL in hotmail that let anyone read anyone else email... ? i do !gmail wins again.Plus, on my windowsXP partiton, which i only use for occasional gameing, msn messenger doesnt even work, it just hangs, and pops up loads of annoying error report email things.I think its quite obviously Google who are the good guys here.google doesnt read your email... it just scans it for keywords to decide wether or not any of its adverts may interest you. gamerchick39 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2005 i installed Google Talk.. i invited my sister using her hotmail address so maybe you dont necessarily need to have gmail to use google talk.. kinda like the people who create MSN Messenger names using aol or comcast email addresses... But once again im not sure if thats gonna work, we will see.I think its kinda cool in a way.. its not innovative or new, but its kinda cool that i can use google for more than a search engine.. i like the branching out as long as it doesnt affect the one thing google does best! optykal 0 Report post Posted August 25, 2005 I had a play around with google talk last night. I have already uninstalled it. I kept dropping out every 20seconds without fail, I'm not really sure what the problem was there. I had a conversation with one of my friends using the "talk" function and it worked pretty well. No delays and it sounded ok. The main problem that I had with it was the fact that it kept trying to add itself to my startup list. And I dont mean every once in a while, it was almost as if every time I did anything it tried to add itself. My startup blocker was having a field day and kept alerting me. So that was it for Google Talk. Gone! I'm going to try out one of the other compatible IM clients with it. I'm sure that will be the best way to go, but we'll have to wait and see. There's an option in Google Talk to have it launch at startup, and you need to disable it. I you ever reinstall it, click Settings at the top of window (when you're signed in) and the first option on the list will be "Start Automattically When Starting Windows". All you needed to do was uncheck that.
