xpress 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 What is your internet connection? The type of your connection is more important than these hardware requirements to host your site. That much of RAM and harddisk space is not necessary to host your own site. But you need a faster internet connection and bandwidth to serve the users. If you have good amount of bandwidth and speed then you can host your site on your own computer. But your computer should run on 24x7 basis. Can your computer handle that? And you should have a good firewall to prevent attacks on your computer. Answer these questions and I will guide you further....

pasten 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 You need to get free dynamic dns support from zonedit.com. Its better if you have Linux and then install apcahe, php and mysql. If your ip is dynamic you also need to get a free account at no-ip.com to point to your new ip everytime. This should get you going. You can google for more info on these. You can ask if you didn't get this.

xpress 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 Linux is better suited for Servers because that is a very secure operating system. And you know most of the webservers we use runs on linux. The second one is linux and its tools are free where as you have to pay for Windows Server operating system. Win XP is actually a desktop operating system, but you still can use XP by using Web Server softwares. But with linux you'll get stand alone server editons (most of them are text based to save RAM and system resources). But setting up with them needs some knowledge in Linux.By the way what is the platform of your website? I mean is it just html or have any server side language like PHP or JSP(java platform) or .Net platform etc ?
mahesh2k 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 If you wish to host your website on computer then i suggest installing linux. Don't fall for XP or WIN7 they do look good and stable but they catch viruses and spyware attack. Again no matter which OS you choose you've to go for protection, either Software /Hardware firewall will do. You can ask Opaque about this, he will definitely help you.If you have website based on PHP/Mysql then WAMP servers can solve your problem. Some of the WAMP options are XAMPP/WAMP/Uniform etc. For JSP hosting you can use Weblogic/ Tomcat. For .NET you can go for (WIndows system must be) Windows Server 2003 and other packages.Hope this helps. For firewall/DOS attacks i think you need to consult with someone who knows about web hosting. Also you didn't mention about exact internet connection, So my suggestion is if it is more than 512KBPS then go for hosting, if it is less than 512 or even 512 then hold your plans. Cause your traffic will have trouble with such low speed.Hope this helps.

flashy 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2009 (edited) If you want to have host like this, first of all you need a VERY good upload speed - and you are looking into the range of >100mb/s. However - if you are specifically targeting say, a local school, or its a community website for a group - then the standard 5mb is good enough, since everybody is local. The wider the audience (globally) the more upload speed you need, since then you will get better ping responses say from Australia.--Any computer is good enough to make into a hosting computer, however, a specifically designed server is better than the standard desktop since it has a better architecture (viruses will find it harder to get in) and it is designed to be on all the time without the wear-n-tear.Also some more tips:Faster ram = faster page loadBigger bandwidth = more visitorsFaster upload speed = better page load times, better pings, bigger audienceMore CPU = faster page load AND quicker database queriesCleaner environment = less risk of dust build up < or fire!Connectivity = NEVER use wifi for a connection, wifi is still pretty much lacking technology - it disconnects and reconnects when it wants to; they get hot really easily; USB consumes more power; wifi is slow and unreliable.--Consider purchasing Windows 2003 or Linux RHE if you got loads of dosh! if you are going to the extreme and making a hosting company thing Edited February 13, 2009 by flashy (see edit history)
