Email Address Revealed in the Free Web Hosting Application

Recommended Posts

I don't know about everyone else, but I like to keep my privacy and I don't like the fact that my email address is show in the free web hosting application. This leaves my Inbox vulnerable to all the spam in the world and I won't accept that; that's why I edit it.I propose that the email address should not be shown in the application.

I must say that i agree with you, you are right. And you are also right to say this in a topic, like that admins can make things better in terms of security/antispam issues.

Actually, I think that the OP has a very good point. Shouldn't it be possible to change the permissions on the application section such that only moderators and admins can see existing topics? I know that other forum softwares can do it. I don't have much particular experience with IPB, but it should be alright. Just set "Can view topics" to no and "Can post new topics" to yes.

If I remember from another topic about this, the best solution of course was to remove your email once you get hosted or ask a mod or admin to remove upon being accepted o decline for hosting. Of course I believe the other suggestion was use a secondary email account for your hosting application for your email while keeping the one you use on a daily basis private. As for making the hosting application visible it is not being index by the search engines and so none of the hosting applications will show up unless you google your email account, but even then it might not appear and on top of that no one would know if their hosting application and thus won't know if they been accepted or not. So you have nothing really to fear about someone finding your email and so use of the options I have mentioned or mentioned above and you will be good to go.

This is what I ended up doing, however the moderator did not initially want to completely remove my email, they just made it impossible for spam bots to read it, however anyone with half a brain could go to the post and still be able to contact me which isn't exactly ideal but I suppose it works. I'd have to agree that it would be great that instead of closing the topics after being created, they would be hidden from at least non-members.

As weird as it is, I post my email address everywhere...I use gmail and I get not even one spam email. My junk box fills up with 600+ a day but in terms of what actually goes through, nothing but what I want/need.So really if you're having issues with spam, just go with gmail. They have enough filters in there to knock out all of that crap, :)And it takes less time to report new domains as spam than it does to sign up to spam, so it's not even worth people's time to screw with you.

I wrote a php script (function) that "blurs" email addresses and have successfully implemented it on several sites. To date, no spammers are getting those addresses. It works with the CMS I use, too, as a function added as a mod.If Opaque needs the function, I will certainly make it available, but he could probably write it quicker and better than I did.

I also agree. I don't like the idea of my email being seen to all eyes. Even though I delete all email messages from people or companies I do not know. I'd just prefer it to not be seen.
