  1. Use a background image and align it bottom right instead of it being an element itself, if possible. Internet Explorer is too unstable for me to test out the page (since i'm using Linux), so maybe someone else can help you out there. The JavaScript you're using for the menus, though, is affecting Konqueror in a really bad way.
  2. Interesting point; noted. Right. I was contemplating on whether or not we should give doctors a bonus for actually making better the sick. For people who just think they're sick might actually be allowed all because the doctor knows they will get a bonus out of it, therefore making the system a bit corrupt. Also, the doctor might actually write down more than what the patient actually has, therefore gaining more income because of it. I figured that banning substances within the food we eat which has caused this nation to be one of the unhealthiest countries on earth, like high fructose corn syrup, would help increase health. I was also considering banning unorganic farming, but that would, i believe, cause food prices to raise more than what it currently is, so we would have to first fix our economy before we can even consider such a thing. Also, that may cause companies to seek farming else where, therefore avoiding the laws we have in place. So we would have to probably work with other countries to prevent our companies from dodging the law. That is, if one of our companies own land in the other countries, that piece of land would be subject to our laws concerning agriculture. Heh. One of the proposals i was contemplating on was limiting the amount of income politicians are allowed to keep or tax them the most, perhaps 35% (or more) of their total earnings. We all know a lot of these people earn money outside of their original salaries, of which would more than certainly, i would say, not only bring us out of debt but also help cover so many other things. Failure to allow such a thing would show just how greedy they are. The unfortunate part being that in order to avoid getting taxed so much, they would seek to "humble" themselves, reducing their earnings to try and keep more of it if possible. This would also show their greed, but it would reduce the kind of income for the States. However, i wouldn't say that because of this "loophole" that this system shouldn't be implemented, for money will come in anyways, and no business i know of would actually seek to reduce their income, let alone customers. The people, of course, would get taxed less based on their total earnings. I was looking into the FairTax thing, and it appears to have similar ideas, but i haven't really done enough research on it to conclude anything about it.
  3. This reminds me of my thoughts concerning thoughts being a chemical process. If thoughts are mere chemical processes, then the chemical process obviously comes first. If it comes first, then we lack free will. That would mean we don't control these processes; matter would be over mind, not the other way around. So how do these chemical processes function? That implies outside interference. But from what? Theoretically, this can be traced all the way back to the ends of the universe, but that also implies that there is outside interference concerning the universe itself. Would we run into a paradox? Would that in itself be proof of a higher, conscious being? Or is mind really over matter and not the other way around?Concerning Bell's theorem, here's the flaw that it is said no one has ever found for it: just because it's logical doesn't make it true. Simplicity hasn't much to do with it not being able to be disproved. Bell's theorem deals with cause and effect; it's really nothing new. It also concerns predictions. An example of Bell's theorem would be a set of dominoes stacked in a huge line so that all would fall. If the first piece falls, the decision has already been made for all the other pieces to fall, even for the ones that haven't already fallen; though in this case, we would be calling the first event the last domino piece, or a domino piece in the middle, which obviously forms a paradox. So Bell's theorem is a bit flawed, as it appears to imply an infinite regression, at least according to your explanation of it.
  4. There are two kinds of gods: God and gods. Whenever the big "G" is present that relates to the one and only, that no other being is greater than. I believe that this God is the Abrahamic God, which would mean it's a He, as mentioned in Scripture. Concerning being made in His image, i feel Genesis 9:6 provides insight on what it truly means. The verse seems to be implying something beyond physical appearance, like a position on a natural hierarchy, a form of greatness concerning everything else in existence.I may not be able to fully understand God, but we don't even fully understand this universe, though that obviously exists; so it cannot be said that ignorance and lack of understanding is proof of non-existence. It is true that the Abrahamic God is sought out for comfort many times, but people seek out money for comfort, children seek out their blankets for comfort by hiding under it, et cetera, but these objects obviously exist; so it cannot be said that comfort is proof of non-existence.Some people say that God is merely the energy that exists all around us. However, that would mean when you cut down a tree, you cut down your god (since matter is said to be condensed energy). That would mean something is obviously greater than this god, like time itself, so the big "G" cannot be used to relate to this lower thing, especially since energy itself doesn't even have a conscious. Anything that lacks a conscious cannot act except through outside intervention; if it can't act on its own, it can't form anything into existence except through outside intervention. Even if energy is said to be neither created nor destroyed, it does not mean that God didn't cause energy into existence and gave it the properties we observe it to have today. I feel, due to the properties of energy, that energy is a big case for the existence of God or a higher, conscious being.
  5. Hmm. I think the waiting line can be reduced if there are more hospitals and if nutritionists start educating the masses. I know there are certain substances in foods today, at least here in the States, that can be banned from the market, like high fructose corn syrup and MSG, et cetera. But you know what i always found ironic? When i would go to the doctor, i would have to wait a long time, sometimes an hour or more, just to see the doctor, only to be seen for about 10 minutes or so and then leave with a prescription. Bleh, that's another thing about drugs, they imply that so long as you take the pill, you can continue doing what caused the problem in the first place. And commercials for certain drugs actually push that way of thinking, which is absurd. So educating the masses really plays a big role here. That's crazy. Correct. I feel that experience can help very greatly here. I know some people are against a national health care system, and there are probably other better ways of going about it, but it's either change the system or stick with the one we have already. If the one we already have isn't providing as good as it should be, then it should be obvious that the system requires change. If we were to just improve the current system, how would it be done? I don't think any of the politicians that were running for president provided a long term, if at all any short term, solution. I know there are other things to be worrying about, but if they took a whole day or so per problem, i think better brain storms would come out of it. One of the reasons i started this topic was to try and come up with ways to make as perfect of a system as possible. Unfortunately, asking the people can only go so far, but it is providing a lot of insight. Considerations also have to come from experience from the doctors themselves and others who work at the hospitals, as they should be able to provided insight on what should be covered, on what is questionable, and on what shouldn't be covered as well. But i don't think we have any doctors here at Xisto.
  6. Heh, yes, quite sad. We have public libraries, police, firefighters, et cetera, but have to pay for the ambulance ride. I'm not sure if the rate is fixed or not, but if i remember correctly, one of the receipts i saw charged over $20 for the ride. 16, eh? I'ma assume 16 is the legal age for work. I know here in the States we have Financial Aid for education after high school, but not everyone is eligible. We also have ways of being sponsored, but these other ways can't be obtained by everyone. It's interesting to see that you guys get free lunch also. But is lunch limited to the campus or can you basically go anywhere to eat? I would assume the former, but the latter is also possible. And how about breakfast, which is always said that it is the best out of all meals? Is breakfast free too? I heard with proper eating and exercise you can reduce the effects of depression, sometimes clearing it away entirely. I had known that eating certain fast foods (if not all) can get you depressed due to all the chemicals in it. That is, if you stop eating it after having it for quite a while, you start feeling the side effects, one of which is depression. This has been known for a while by many who study nutrition, but you can see it for yourself if you see the movie Super Size Me. Yeah, that was one of the side effects of having a national health system that i observed: competition. But the competition talked about was from other hospitals trying to get as many patients as possible, and not only increase in patients, but also increase in healthy patients! I personally am getting a bit tired of the system here in the States, as doctors aren't getting paid, or paid more, for healthy patients—to get them to stop smoking, eat right, et cetera—but they're getting paid more to prescribe drugs to patients. And a refill hits the wallet hard—imagine for those who are on multiple pills. SSI helps reduce the damage, but people don't receive SSI because they have (good-paying) jobs, it's normally because they're jobless. I've been attempting to figure out ways to overcome the competition trouble without "Big Pharma" having much if anything to do with an increase in profits, but there are still some things to work out. How do they pay it all back? Or do you mean they just pay taxes, not necessarily pay back what they used? I heard there were exceptions, but i didn't think it would be for those things. The exceptions i would implement or would have assumed would be things that are desired or desirable. That is, you wouldn't be allowed to pay for something that "fixes" a "problem" that relates to self esteem or ego, like enlarging body parts, reducing wrinkles, et cetera; dental care i would allow, for what if you fall and break your teeth, et cetera? Dental problems is not only a hygiene problem but also a health problem. If i were to make a national health care system i would make it illegal for the national health system to cover for things that help the ego, et cetera. The only thing it would cover is actual health problems and injuries. This would, i believe, help prevent false spending and would allow earnings outside of the system. I'm also contemplating whether or not patients who are apathetic towards their health should still have their health coverage continued. Heh, i don't think one would require to live in the UK and have an accident in order to be surprised. Right, i was thinking about that too. But would you happen to know the ranges of the classes? That is, the lower class, the middle class, et cetera, and what constitutes one who can't afford to have much taken away from them? Like, other than jobless, if one makes from ?100,000 year or lower, they get charged a certain percentage, those above to another range get charged higher, et cetera? I'm wondering how the system is divided concerning the wages.
  7. After watching the movie SiCKO by Michael Moore and already knowing just how corrupt the American government is, i wondered if such a documentary was as accurate as it implied. I mean, i've seen just how far the media can push something without much (if any) justifications for their statements where it makes it hard to decide whether or not something is true. So i figured here at the Xisto forums where we have people from literally all over the world, benefiting from different kinds of health care and others probably not benefiting from any, would be the perfect place to ask if things are going well for them in their country concerning universal or national health care, without expecting anyone for any reason (or at least reasons not even worth it) to push or lie about. Before i decided to start a topic about this, though, i looked into this forum and found a topic about Canada's taxes concerning health care. The topic itself was practically along the lines of the movie SiCKO. Likewise was the Frontline series located in post #7 of that topic. So that led me to believe that a lot of the news media was spoon fed (again). In either case, i was in amazement from both documentaries: from SiCKO before i did further research, and from Frontline after doing further research. During my research i realized that it is truly as bad as the media says it is, as health care was one of the topics touched on in the presidential debates. Although this topic is mostly on health care, i couldn't help but be just as shocked and amazed to hear that France pays for college education (from taxes, of course); they have a national education service. They even have house doctor services, where you call up the doctor and they actually go to your house without you having to go anywhere. That's really how it should be, for when a person is sick, they shouldn't have to get up and leave to go to the hospital. And, sadly, here in the States we actually have to pay for the ambulance ride—and before this research, i thought the ambulance ride was free. This is a bit embarrassing for the States. In the SiCKO movie, i saw Cuba two ranks below the United States (the States taking 37th place, if i remember correctly), placing Cuba in 39th place; yet, near the end of the movie, Cuba was looking better than the States. I have heard the media here in the States have attempted to debunk national health care in the past, talking about other countries, and know some people who believe a national health care system shouldn't be provided by the government. But watching these documentaries, i feel we could learn much from other countries. So, i am interested in the health care services the people here in Xisto are prescribed by their country. How's your country's health care system?
  8. Topic is resolved. If you want to talk about your website, start another topic in its respective forum. This topic is closed.
  9. Since i know you're a gamer, this question so relates to you. Therefore, either bogging down a system is irrelevant or there really is no bogging down of the system. It's in a way special pleading. Also, if i'm not mistaken, in Vista you no longer require Internet Explorer for updating the system, so uninstalling Internet Explorer (if at all possible ) would solve your "dilemma." Albeit, i have around three different browsers installed on here and it in no way bogs down the system. But Linux is known for good memory management, so that could be the case. We would all like for Internet Explorer to pick up the ball a bit. Actually, many of us have been waiting a long time for them to do so, even now we're still waiting. Microsoft, who has hundreds of people working for them, appears to be doing more work on their other products, mostly the ones they make money off of, than Internet Explorer. While all the other popular browsers have and are coming out with major releases and many minor releases, it's taking Internet Explorer forever just to come out with one major update, that is, Internet Explorer 8. Sadly, even when Internet Explorer 8 becomes stable, the chances of it not even scoring 50 points on the Acid 3 test are really high. As for justification for switching while many sites work with Internet Explorer, that's being worked on. Some are even saying by Microsoft itself. All we need are more Vista moments.
  10. The \27A0 is that arrow symbol you see at the end of each external link. I have had a similar idea for my website a long time ago to help distinguish links that would cause a new window or tab to open by using CSS to place a symbol or image after every link whose target attribute had the value of "_blank", but i don't really have any links that have that attribute with that value on my site, coming from my scripts at least. You've probably seen these kinds of links in many places, mostly dominant in wikis. I haven't checked the source code of the wikis, so i'm not sure if they used CSS or a server-side scripting language to detect what kind of link it is, but that is basically how it would be done using CSS.
  11. True, post count doesn't necessarily mean anything, but the quality of the user's posts also doesn't necessarily prove the legitimacy of the user. Experience as moderator of this forum shows that even long time members have the tendency of breaking the rules—sometimes more than once. Also, a lot of posts marked as spam were quality posts.
  12. I was informed of this by a friend. At first i thought it was a joke, until i actually searched for it myself. I figured if i found a news website whose main news coverage comes from India, that would be enough evidence for me to know that it can't be a joke. So what do cows and soda have in common? Apparently it's the cow's urine. As graphical and disturbing as this may seem to many, i figured it would be okay to post about since people are actually going to be drinking this stuff! Now i have heard of detoxification and its benefits, but there has surely got to be far better ways of going about in doing so than this—and i, who has done personal research on health and detoxification, know that there are better ways of going about it: like getting rid of soda altogether. I don't even want to think about the properties of this kind of soda. :6 I'm also amazed at the paradoxical arguments provided for its benefits. Source. For other sources, just Google the obvious keywords.
  13. I had noticed Ubuntu logos from you today but did not know that you were actually messing around with them in the GIMP. But now that i bear that knowledge, does that mean your current avatar, you made it from scratch in the GIMP?
  14. I got that error when i attempted to initiate class B using the addItem function; that is, $x->addItem(new B);I knew it was unnecessary to use that function to try and add an object into an array since any member that isn't stated otherwise becomes a public member of that class by default, but i tried it anyway to try and duplicate the problem on my side. If the array were to have been a private member, then i would have been forced to edit the structure you provided beyond its original state.
  15. Well, if that is the exact code used, then i am amazed that you didn't get a syntax error for the variable "item." Either way, i believe the appropriate way to do what i think you're trying to do is like this: <?phpClass A { var $arrayHere; function addItem($item){ $arrayHere[] = $item; }}Class B { function doSomething(){ print "Something..."; }}$x = new A;$x->arrayHere[] = new B;$x->arrayHere[0]->doSomething();?>If this is not what you're trying to do, then i have misunderstood.
  16. This is pretty much along the lines that i would argue from. I've seen arguments from both sides that were good but the attempts in trying to justify piracy would never succeed from a logical and reasonable position, meaning i have yet to see anything that truly justifies piracy. What people argue from is from profits—which will only divert the actual, moral issue, therefore allowing supporters of piracy or those playing devil's advocate to provide arguments that validly debunk the arguments that argue concerning profits. That is, there is too many red herrings going on. The fact of the matter is, what it really comes down to is not whether or not any profits are made, but whether or not the desires of the authors of that form of media should be considered. If their desires for their property should not be considered, then why should we consider any argument for piracy? In the end, i would say, it all comes down to: If you created something where you were the sole author of that product and did not want that product to be pirated, should it be allowed, without your permission, to distribute the software? Note that distribution of a product without proper consent is illegal. It is only legal if and only if the original author(s) gave the permission for a certain organization, group or individual (and only them) to distribute the product. Any one who does not have the right to distribute is performing an illegal act, and therefore piracy—the illegal distribution of a product or form of media—should not be allowed.
  17. Does the same problem occur when using the drive in another computer? Or do you only have access to one desktop computer? Does the problem occur only when a CD is put in or does it occur by just opening and closing the drive bay? The main reason why people open up the drive bay is to put a CD into, but a CD may be irrelevant to the actual problem. Therefore see if the drive is detected after merely opening and closing the drive bay, if you haven't done so already. If you have other CD drives in the system, does it happen to the other drives as well? And if you switch the positions of the drives, do the other drives then start experiencing the same problem or does the same drive experience the same problem? I'm no expert in this kind of thing, but the answers to these questions may help provide insight.
  18. You state there aren't enough unique threads (or at least imply it) and that having people attempt to create unique ones per person each month would solve the problem. The desired result can't be any different than it is as you say it currently is. Being there so many users, the amount of "unique" topics is bound to reduce, ultimately leading back to the "problem" you suggest exists and want solved. If uniqueness is forced, then we'll eventually (if not already) run out of things to post about, which would ruin the purpose of having a forum.
  19. Through Synaptic package manager when marking packages for installation and hitting "Apply," you have the option (a checkbox) to download the packages only. Choose all the packages you want even if you don't want to install them and check the checkbox. This will download them all into the apt cache located at /var/cache/apt/archives. To clear the cache afterwards type in the terminal CONSOLE sudo apt-get clean
  20. I wouldn't say they're scared of learning something new. I would say it's more of being scared of not getting hired in a field of their interest. After all, a sheet of paper that says you are competent in the field (i.e. diploma) is more desirable to an employer than a sheet of paper that implies that you're just a hobbyist (i.e. in this case, your resume); at least where i live and today's world it is.
  21. I learned HTML by viewing the source code of websites and matching the text with the surrounding elements. Anchors were probably the first HTML element i learned because of how easy they are to track down in the source code. I learned CSS in a similar fashion, though it took a bit longer to figure out where the classes and ids were defined at. What interested me in CSS was how you can apply different styles to designated elements that could not be done with simple HTML alone. Basically i took the time to learn and expand because i felt limited with my current knowledge. Same goes with pretty much everything i know concerning computers. I dove into PHP because HTML pages were static and burdening when updating big websites, and i got tired of frames and iframes. PHP also brought new ways to expand. The knowledge from PHP helped me understand JavaScript easier, so i learned a bit of that too, though i don't use it much. But then i felt limited with PHP too, since it was mostly for web development and i wanted to get into desktop application development and PHP is a bit immature for it (though PHP-GTK is pretty mature, but i'm not that interested in GTK). That's where Python came in. I also took the time to get into C and C++, but i haven't done extensive studies on it, and i hate compiling programs and having to worry about memory management. That's why i stick to interpreted languages. But that's all concerning software development. All my hardware knowledge came from what a friend told me about, since he's interested in the hardware aspect of computers. The current computer i own i put together after purchasing all the necessary parts, but that's basically like connecting dots—it's not hard; however, if a part is busted, a newbie might think they did something wrong instead. Other knowledge from, for example, graphic design was just me messing around when i was bored and inspired by other art. Same goes for music production.I don't really like to use the term "self-learned" or phrases like "learned on my own" because in the end there was at least one tutorial or manual or forum i read and used to further my understanding and knowledge, which there is very little difference between reading a book in school and having a teacher to help you—if the teacher can at all help.
  22. Question to those who are experiencing negative credits in the hundreds: Have you purchased anything recently? I say this because i am experiencing negative credits in the amount of what i have recently purchased. I'm inclined to say it's not necessarily a bug in the script.
  23. Didn't you just go to the doctor to have them removed? $5,000 is enough to make your jaw drop. I was told that freckles is a side effect of people's skin that doesn't cope well with the sun's rays. So it's probably a defense mechanism by the skin, an allergy if you will. Whether or not this is the case with you i don't know, but rather than giving a doctor money that is enough to put a down payment on many things, go do some research on the causes of freckles—information that a doctor probably won't tell you about.
  24. Just like Darasen, i too wonder if the truth was told off camera. It would have been nice to see their reaction after being told it's not Windows 7 but KDE4. KDE4 has been coming a long way since its initial release, although i've been using it mostly since KDE4.1—where it actually became something usable for a development environment. Now i use it as my main desktop environment, especially since Nvidia fixed a lot of problems with their Linux drivers, making KDE4 more bearable with users with Nvidia cards.
  25. And what are they? Re-read your entire post and you'll see you provide none. Even if i were to run off of implications, i am only left with educating HSUS (whoever they are) on how to properly handle animals and money. From what i get from your post, that's like, "Good luck in doing so!" Your entire post is basically an attempt to get me to hate HSUS based on your words—a form of appeal to emotion. What could this do? That can only make me want to do one of two things: (1) hurry up and take (legally) as many animals as i can from them, which would require handing over some cash, or (2) seek to shut them down, which according to you is practically impossible due to all their lawyers; and even if i were to successfully shut them down, i would be left with a dilemma on where to place all those animals that we would be left with. Unfortunately for you, i do not easily appeal to emotion, especially when appealing to emotion doesn't even help the already-worse(-by-your-words) situation that exists. Therefore, how would you solve the dilemmas that would come from this? What are your suggestions?
