  1. Well, I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. It sure was a fraud, but please don't think the same about just any e-book. I've published 2 myself and sold them through an auctions site with certain success and very good comments about the quality and content of them. Of course, they're not about how to get rich in one day doing nothing, but about how to make successful presentations and drawing for kids :DAnyway, e-commerce is getting stronger by the day and we're tending to having a paperless society, so e-books won't disappear at all. Also, I once bought a very good e-book that was $40USD - Too much for just a simple file? Not at all. It really was worth it.Bye and watch out for spammy books like the ones you talk about.
  2. Oh, folks! You complain about your health care systems when they are so much better than the ones here in Mexico. I think your system is not comparable to the social security scheme held by the government here. There are 2 health institutions here, one for people who work for private companies and another one for people who work for the government. Regarding the first, it receives money from the government, the employer and the employee (how much you pay depends on your income, but it's not very cheap indeed). Service is terrible. When you feel sick and go to get medical attention you must be lucky because if it's an emergency, clinics and hospitals are most of the time too crowded with patients -needless to say many ppl have died waiting for attention. If you just go to see your doctor, now you have to make an appointment. Sometimes they'll give you a date for a month later or more, which is ridiculous because you go there because you feel bad at that moment! If you are sent to see an specialist you sometimes have to wait for 2 or 3 months -again, many have died waiting for attention. The drugs they prescribe are nearly always the same: aspirins and antibiotics. The doctors are told to do so because it's cheaper. When you need a special drug, sometimes they don't have it because it's out of stock -for months- and poor people have to manage to get money to buy them at a regular drugstore. Most of the times they cost a lot!Ambulances? You have to make an appointment too. Months before your visit to the hospital. I know this is not the first world, but corruption has made the social security system what it is now. They're improving slowly, but it's not enough and the mafia inside the same system is too powerful. The best is to get a health plan insurance yourself. You pay a fee to get attention at a private hospital, unfortunately the vast majority of the population can't afford it. I'm lucky to have one of those plans for me and my family thanks to the company I work for! A couple of years ago my wife got sick and her operation and 2 days at the hospital totaled more than $10,000 USD. Fortunately most of it was covered by the insurance
  3. Wow! Thank you. That's a really helpful opinion. You seem to be really good at graphics. Where can I see your work? I'd love to see what you can do with all that graphic knowledge. All the best!
  4. O.K. I've been a loyal Corel Draw user for the last 9 years, but recently I had the chance to try Illustrator and Photoshop, and guess what? I see that in spite of being a little less friendly, the results you get are of a much higher quality, specially when it comes to gradients. For example, in my experience, with Corel apps you see bands making the gradients of the art you export and in Adobe's apps you don't.I've heard a lot of graphic design professionals prefer Adobe's stuff. What do you prefer???The downside of the Adobe stuff is its high price The Corel suite is much cheaper. But I guess that, once again, you get what you pay for.
  5. Hi, graphics lovers. This is a 2 part question:If you had to choose between 3D Studio Max 9 or Carrara 6 to render your 3D designs which would you chose and why?As of today my experience is that 3DSM has a more difficult interface for creating good materials and I think it includes hardly any presets, and Carrara is all the opposite, but remember I have little experience with these programs, so I hear you. And the second part: do you know where can you get free materials (or shaders) for the program you chose? Thanks in advance!
  6. I personally don't believe in astrology. To start with, the position of the various constellations is today different from what it was when astrology was "founded" or created. So maybe you're supposed to be Capricorn and you're Sagittarius indeed. Also, there's so much complication now with ascendants and all that.I once heard that if you listen to the description of the people of any zodiac sign and think about it, you'll see that you are much like what they're describing, because they talk about characteristics of people in general, things that anybody can have regardless of his/her sign.If horoscopes were true I'd be millionaire by now!!!
  7. Your sigs are very good. I specially liked the one with the imperialist mouse What did you do in Illustrator? Only the texts? Best regards!
  8. This is a bit of a tech question -excuse my ignorance. The company I work for is changing hosting provider. The new hosting will be ready next Monday, but Sales people keep on pressing because they want to send our e-newsletter ASAP. We already have hired the new hosting company, but our domain name is still with the old hosting co. Is it possible somehow to send our e-newsletter with the new hosting co. before changing the DNS's of our domain? Some background:Our current ISP and hosting provider is the biggest comm. company in Mexico and therefore its service sucks now. And on top of that, they suddenly blocked our e-mail service because according to them we were sending too many messages, while we had been sending our e-newsletter every month to +1,000 legal subscribers for about 8 years at that time!
  9. First: I posted this yesterday but I did't find it anywhere. Not even in my posts inside my profile. ???Someone suggested me to re-desing the website of the company I work for using Flash. I told her I wouldn't because Google doesn't index the text you put inside your flash movies. I proved my point with some searches of text found in Flash files found online. Now, I think Google has overcome this problem and finally it can index text in Flash files. Can you confirm this? If its not possible yet. Can anything PRACTICAL be done to keep the great ranking my site has in Google? Thanks!
  10. I don't use either, I prefer Alzip which works great, unzips even rar files and IT'S FREE! You can get it from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. It even has a shell for your o.s. It's as good as Winzip in my opinion, only you can't create a self extracting file with your own icon, I think. Give it a try.
  11. Wow! That's really interesting. Thanks for your post. Now, you say your tablet has 512 pressure levels. Do you consider it good enough? Maybe 1024 is just too much for a regular user? Is yours a Wacom?
  12. Last year someone suggested we should re-design in Flash the website of the company I work for. I told her I wouldn't do it because Google doesn't index the text in your flash files online. I proved my point by making some searches of text found in websites made completely in Flash. Does Google already have the capability to index the text you put in your Flash movies? If not, what can you do to make your site Google friendly even if it was made with Flash? Thanks in advance for your comments!
  13. My new laptop came with Vista and so I had to upgrade my Corel Draw 10 to X4. I think new o.s. should be totally compatible with legacy software, the developer of the o.s. should release a patch or something to make it compatible. If not, you're forced to spend much more money than what you planned. Also, I hate the search feature in Vista. It looks like you can not make a search like this, for example: *thing*.pdf. It's complicated to do it and get the results you want. To solve this issue I got myself "Find File Professional" which is a really good program because it lets you make searches like my example and is very fast. And it's free!!! Another thing I hate is that I had to download a lot of drivers and patches before making my new system stable (before SP1 was released). And now people say that it's just a temporary system that will soon be replaced!
  14. That's a great story, and you, my friend OpaQue have what it takes to be a successful businessman. Keep up the good work and I believe you'll get really good results (if you are not actually getting them by now, since your story started so long ago).I found your business model quite attractive and innovative. I'm sure it can be quite profitable too. Thanks for everything!
  15. When I was at university I had to learn to program in dBase III+ and to learn MS Office because teachers were not really good. So I got some books at the library, including Excel for Dummies and went to the labs at school to learn more. After that, I learned to use Frontpage, Bryce, Corel Draw, and now with all the tutorial on the internet I've learned about a lot of softwares like Hexagon, Flash, etc.I think that it doesn't matter if you have a tutorial or a book you're still "learning on your own". The big thing about it is that you have the will and the persistence to learn without a teacher pushing you to do so. Many people are just so scared of anything new that they go to a lot of schools when they could easily learn by themselves at home
  16. LOL Well... with 4 kids the world crisis is a good reason to save I had a paid hosting somewhere else, but when I was searching for a new hosting company I found Xisto which seemed to be the best and on top of that it was free. Who wouldn't take such a great offer? Besides forums are a lot of fun. I had never used them until now! Anyway, I'm still building my site and if everything goes as planned I'll move to the paid hosting then
  17. Good to know! I've known several Canadian folks and they're all very nice people! Yours is an easy one, galexcd: Somebody who knows a lot about IT. Enough to use UNIX (or one of its descendants) and Macs instead of the always problematic Windows and PC's. I mean... you're an evil programmer, man!
  18. Not bad! You surprised me indeed! But I have 4 children and you forgot to mention I'm a little nuts Now let's see if I can do just as good (I don't think I could). I imagine Jlhaslip as an American man who looks quite like his avatar and also likes beer and to travel as a tourist. Additionally, it looks like he's interested in making some money online (wait... you're right... that's not a big guess because it looks like we all want to do it). Thanks and best regards, Jlhaslip!
  19. Yes. It's funny indeed. In fact, regarding your nick, my dear friend I don't know why at the beginning I thought you were one of those teenagers who love destruction Then I saw your avatar and thought it looked like a mad scientist or something from a comic book. Fortunately now I know you are a very fine and intelligent man and a very friendly and participative member of the forum. Best regards!
  20. Nobody at all??? Well I think this definitely tells me something about the Mexican market using Internet: They just don't know what it is! Seriously: I think I'll have to make an English speaking web site instead of a Spanish speaking -local- one in order to have some success
  21. Well, I don't think there's a better place to post this, so here I go:I've just come up with the idea of telling everybody else what their signature tells us about them. For example, in a recent post Xalor said he's 15 years old -and looks like a very smart boy-, while I was thinking he was a 37 yr. old Ex-sailor with scars all over the face and a big beard drinking rum in front of the computer. What do you think about the other Xisto members by looking at their sigs (and avatars)? Don't cheat and come post your comments before looking at the members' profiles! :DThis shows us that we sometimes look to people like something different to what we really are... Mmmm... No. Not really. In facts it only shows us that we thought our sigs were cool and they make people think other funny things about us! :DYou can start with my Sig and Avatar of course (please do!) and there are other great ones like SM's for example :PHave fun! We all need fun in our lives!
  22. Welcome to Xisto, Xalor! Although as you can see I'm quite new here myself too.To tell you the truth I thought you were much older, like 37 or something and I thought your nick meant something like Ex-Sailor and you were a tough dude with a big beard, a lot of muscles and scars all over the face you got in your ship LOL Now, your sigs look quite nice and I'm sure you'll shortly improve them a lot. You must be a wise guy since you're already very tech-savvy and can learn a lot from the internet. (When I was 15 I could only use an IBM PS2 for an hour a week, at school, using 3.5" diskettes and MS-DOS! No internet access at all - I think only Bill Gates could use internet back then ).
  23. I'll have to check if there's no copyright problem to post some here, but I guess there won't be any. That of the GFX Crew sounds interesting, but what would you have to do to activate it again? BTW, I think Saint Michael is part of it. Right?
  24. Hi, guys! I'm thinking about buying a graphic tablet, but keep on wondering if it's easy to use -as simple as a piece of paper with a pencil-, if you don't get lost about where you're drawing, etc. Is it easy to use it to -let's say- draw in Illustrator?Have you ever used one? Do you recommend buying one?The second part:If I decide to buy one. What specs should I look for? Size? Pressure Levels? Thanks in advance for your help!
  25. Hi there! Just to recommend you all, and specially the 3D graphics lovers to visit this site: http://www.cgsociety.org/ it's got some really beautiful works of art in its gallery. And you can even submit your own art. Go check it and tell me your favourite. I'm sure you'll be very inspired by those great artist after visiting the site. One of my favourites is this Portrait of a Girl. It's so good that it looks like a photograph!
