I personally use Linux at home and Work. I have recently purchased a notebook that has the AMD 64 bit processor in it. However, it is running Win XP Home. I am not at all, or ever have been, really impressed woth Win XP. Win 2000 Pro was probably the best OS MS put out, in my opinion. I am thinking about wiping it out and installing Fedora Core 4 64 bit version on it. Anyway, in order to be convinced to use Linux, you have to be willing to take a chance and live a little. Linux doesn't come by easy in configuring, but once you know the key parts, such as, setting it up, edit config files, and how to start and stop processes and daemons, you will be good to go. I use Fedora at home with no probs. For word processing I use Open Office which is able to save in MS Word format if need be, and can Open MS Word .doc files. The Linux E-Mail client, Evolution, is in a lot of ways like Outlook. It has the calendaring system , and can connect to the MS Exchange server. As for Linux being more secure, no need for virus protection, that is all fine and dandy, but the real nugget about Linux is control. Once you learn Linux the deeper you can go. You can recompile the OS Kernel in Linux to be fined tuned to yiour hardware specs, this helps speed it up as well. Another cool feature is that p[atches and upgrades on the Linux system are produced much faster than any other OS. That is the coolness of having thousands of people around the world working on code to better Linux non-stop.Just my 2 cents.

badinfluence:Sounds like you need to go into your BIOS and make sure that the CDROM is the first device to boot up from. Also, depending on some Manufacturers you may have to hit F11 or F12 during boot up to have a screen pop up to choose which device to boot up from. I have installed FD 4 on a Microtel (Wal-Mart) PC with no problem, Dell, and old COMPAQ running Pentium 500 Mhz processor with 512 Megs of RAM. no issues installing on either of those. So, before changing your CDROM out check and see if your CDROM is the first booting device and not your HDD.OpaQue:Concerning the i810 issue, I have not had that issue. I loaded Fedora COre 3 on and IBM using the i810 and had no probs. What exactly did yours do?

I have heard that the PS3 was going to have an internal Hard Drive this time, but then again that is pure speculation. I have not done alot of research on the PS3. I do feel that the console wars have begun between PS3 and XBOX. I think both are good consoles. However, nothing beats an Atari 2600, just kidding. Anyway, I am an XBOX user and I can't wait for the new XBOX to come out, but even more, PS# rumor has it that it may compete with the media capabilities that XBOX touts it has in its new upcoming console. Concerning the memory slots in the new XBOX, has no one looked at their XBOX controiller while playing? You have two slots on your controller where to insert a memory card. Anywho, I am totally ready to see what the consoles have to offer. It seems each generation of console gets a little closer to graphics that seem so realistic.

A kernel panic is usually due to a hardware issue. With my experience with Linux that has been the issue. What is your system specs? This where Knoppix usually comes in handy, or any live cd. This helps to check to see if Linux and your hardware is compatible. Linspire, from what I have heard is pretty descent, but you tend to have to pay for a lot of stuff that seems like bloat. However, they do have an easier way of installing software from their click -n -run wharehouse. Another good diistro, which I used a few years ago when I was a newbie was Lycoris, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. Their forums are good for a lot of Linux help as well. Anyway, if you could, list your hardeware specs here and we can see if we can see what is up.

Read an interesting article in Time magazine. The XBOX is not only geared as a gaming console, but a total media system. Their target is to replace the DVD player, Play CD music, load pics from computer or from cell phone, and is suppose to be able to link to your computer wirelessly. This is a bold new step for gaming consoles. The way they talked about it is that it was more of a media system with the bonus of playing games. Very interesting. I also read that they will announce, and are hoping to have the XBOX 360 to be able to play the old XBOX games as well. Also, from some of thepics I have seen from the games the graphics are out of this world. On Tiger Woods PGA 2006 game every blade off grass is indepndant as in real life swaying, and the shadow is not just a shadow blur, but an actual shadow a of individual blades of grass, and trees and leaves. Very realistic. Another picture showed the Gidfather. I thought it was Marlo Brando himself it was so life like. I am definately going to have to get this console. However, I will wait until the price goes down.

According to the specs on xbox's web site, the new XBOX will come with a 20 Gb hard drive. I am not sure what is in the first one, but I do believe I have heard that it was either 40 or 50 gb as stated.

I think using the ReiserFS would server as a good journaling file system. I say go with freeBSD. Either that or use SuSE. From my understanding is that ReiserFS is a good journaling system.

T100: This is the problem we are currently having with our firewall now. It seems to peak the cpu out to around 98 % causing the network to slow drasticly. The only solution is to reset it once a week. All the configurations stay the same, so that is a good thing, but come Friday I am back in the server closet with a pen to reset it. It gets aggravating after awhile. I have looked at Baracuda, and it seems that it will do what I am looking for. It has a built in Spam and Antivirus functionality which would greatly help on the protective end. However, it states that it carries the load so the e-mail server, or machines in general do not have to take the load. This is good in theory, but I am worried that perhaps its CPU will over load as well, and then I am back to resetting it once a week. I like netgear myself, and in fact I use it at home, but I am not sure if it can handle the load of 70 + people and 6 servers. The firewall we use now was not my decision to use to begin with, and I really wish there were some more research done before the decision was handed down to me to purchase the firewall we have now. I would suggest that the firewall is good for a small setup such as 10 to 15 users with 1 or maybe 2 servers top. We are a growing comapany and I need something that can produce, and handle our system. I am almost tempted to set up another Linux box as a Firewall, but I feel that I would invest to much time, and money in resources to go this route. I am very proficient in Linux so that would not be the problem. The problem once again goes back to, can the hardware support the load. We have spent $400.00 on the current firewall, which made me leary to begin with. However, the Baracuda runs around $3000.00 and that includes replacement and updates. Our current firewall seems to have been discontinued, and has never had any updates available which is very aggravating, and unsatisfactory. So, before I even present this option to the Tech Committee, I need to have all my ducks in a row, and different solutions to look over and compare.

I have a Vivatar I purchased about three years ago. It has been a good one, but it does lack in the quickness of capturing images. I am looking at getting a new Sony. Sony seems to be quicker with it's picture taking, almost real time speed. I am lovin that. No hesitation is what I am looking for.

I have been thinking about renting this game. I have heard from friends that this game is really good. Is this based on the premise of the movie, or is there an actual storyline to follow? I have played Clone Wars, and I must say I was very disappointed. Anyway, I am probably going to pick it up this weekend and give it a shot. What did you play this game on? I have an XBOX, and hope that it will be great graphicly, as well as plot wise.

Well XBOX could have an advantage if they provide online game playing via wireless connection, sorta like a pda does. Now that would be cool, and it would be able to join other local handhelds as well. Another cool feature would be the ability to to play a game from online, in other words instead of loading a cd you just have a repository you can log in to. The possabilties are endless if you think about it. Perhaps XBOX may wait a bit until XBOX 360 is released and then venture into a hand held system.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have used Zone alarm for my personal computer at home. Works very well. However, I am looking for more of a system wide hardware solution that provides a little more for a network environment. :-)

Can anyone recommend a good firewall. I am currently running around 70 + users and we have two internet connections. I have been looking at the Baracuda, but I wanted to get some opinions first on what is out there. I must state that I am looking for a hardware device, not software. This is a growing company so I need something that will give us growing room.

We use Dell workstations here, and I would say that back in the day, Dell was great, now they are alright. As Cif said, you can build a better computer to benchmark stats. Also, for as much as you pay for a Dell, you can save or even break even and come out with a better machine. Another thng to look at is local computer guys that are trying to make a name for themselves. They want to build a computer that is affordable to Dell, but more dependable and better. Also, you get local support as well. So do I like Dell, well, let say they are OK, but they lack in the tech department and their hardware could be a little better.

I have heard gee-nome, guh-nome, and nome. Most of the people I deal with that are in the linux community, including myself all call it nome. Perhaps the best source for the answer is to ask the creator of Gnome.

One thing you can try is to:Right click on My Computer --> PropertiesYou will see a properties box pop up, now:Click on the Advanced tab, now click on Startup and RecoveryUnder the System Failure section, remove the the check mark from Automaticly Reboot.I had an issue here at the office with one of our worstations rebooting non-stop. This helped. Another thing you might want to do is to take the cover off your computer, and boot it up and watch the CPU fan. Make sure it is running, if your fan is not running then your CPU is getting hot and this will cause your machine to reboot time and time again. Above all, as others have suggested, get an AVR, Surge protector, battery backup, and anything else to proof your system from the electrical issues. Hope this helps.

Does he get a Windows environment at all, or any type of error message. I would do as the others suggest, and make sure that your HDD (Hard Drive) isn't janked up. Make sure all cables, RAM, PCI cards, and etc... are firmly in there place. Another thing to do is you can also remove the Mother boards battery to reset the CMOS. I don't think you would need to do that. However, when all else fails, try what you can. That is the bueaty of the Computer world.

We use Norton Corporate version 7. Which version are you using. I am wondering if it is a Corporate version thing. If not then perhaps something has created the folder when it shouldn't have been.

This is probably late by now, but you could use the yum command. Open console su to root, and then type yum update firefox.This is also a good way to keep your Fedora updated as well. This is what I use frequently. I just open the command prompt and type yum update, and then I sit back, or walk away depends on how many packages are being updated. This will keep your OpenOffice, libs, and whatever that needs updating updated.

What kind of journaling system are you looking for? SuSE and Fedora have different kinds that you might want to look in. As for bsd, are you looking at freeBSD or bsd in general? I believe that bsd does use the ReiserFS jpurnaling syste. If this is correct you can try using SuSE, they were the ones they began the ReiserFS. It is actually neat how it works. Anyway, Linux is just a clone of Unix, so you can go either way. If you are wanting bsd style, then I suggest freeBSD. I hope this helps some.

I think I have isolated what is causing my problem. In C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs I notice alot of .tmp files being created at every 2 to 3 minut intervals. Once I clena these out, my hard drive space seems to go back to normal. Does anyone know what would cause this?

Has anyone tried Fedora Core 4 beta versions yet, and what do you think about it? I am currently using Fedora Core 3 and love it. However, I see Fedora Core 4 is coming out very soon, but I do not have a test machine to see how the progress of the new Fedora is coming. I definately would like to upgrade from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4, but if there is not much difference in them then I would rather wait until Fedora Core 5. Anyway, any information on this would be appreciated.

No, according to their specs,XBOX, there is a 20 gb Hard Drive that is standard. The Hard Drive is also suppose to be upgradeable. Here is a specs sheet from CNET http://news.a.com.com/

I will look for anything out of the normal. My first agenda though is to move, or ghost the hard drive to a bigger one in the NT box. I need some more play room and a backup, even if it is infected, before tackling anything dealing with the boot script. Again thank you for the directional help.
