  1. The reason most people use windows is because it is very easy to use and everyone has been using it for a while. Macs, on the other hand, are becoming easier to loose but still are an Unix OS. If you have a mac, you will have to use the console quite often to do tasks unlike windows. Dont get me wrong, i am not saying windows is better. I currently am one 1 of my 3 computers of which i have windows on this one, linux on my laptop that i take to class, and Mac OSX_86 on my other desktop. I use all 3 so i am proficient in them and i love my Linux OS but for a novice it can be hard to pick up.
  2. Its very similar to a piece of software called TuneBite. These software programs basically play the audio at high speeds through your sound card and re-record them in the format you choose. Thus eliminating the DRM while still obeying the copyright laws in effect.
  3. Wow very informative post ... next time tell us why you bought and then what you didnt like about it before telling us not to buy it. Be imformative and just randomly opinionated.
  4. I like how they have longer battery life but besides that they arent anything different just a bit cheaper for more storage space. I would just wait til they release the ipod with a touch screen, etc.
  5. There is no legal way to obtain microsoft word for free unless you want to try the new beta version which is accessable from their website. Like the post before me, i would recommend getting open office since it is free, open source and you can write .doc files that open fine in microsoft word.
  6. I booked a cruise for spring break last year from expedia and it was great. I had absolutely no problems with them and nothing was held on my account. The only inconvience i had was the guy who i booked my trip on mistyped my email address so i had to call them back to get them to resend the confirmation email.
  7. Uninstall the old copy of the Sims 2. Delete the folder and all of the contents remaining. Then open up regedit by going to start -> run -> regedit. Perform a search for sims or the maker of sims and delete any keys that come up that are legit. I would backup the registry before you do anything just incase something happens. Then try to reinstall the software using the new cd. If this doesnt work, i would suggest going to the SIms 2 website and find the manual uninstall instructions and do them but it shouldnt really be anything different than what i said.
  8. Those seem about right for a windows operating system. First of all, most people will not need anything above Home Basic (esp. if they dont have a graphics card to handle Aero which isnt included in it). Secondly, the reason these prices have to be high is because most people wont upgrade without a new computer being purchased and this way they will make more money than just the deal with computer manufacturers like Dell.
  9. Wow that is pretty cool. I might have to look into it for when i go on vacation and want to listen to tunes on a friends computer or even if i want to rock on to my own music at work. Thanks dude for the cool check site.
  10. It doesnt look bad at all but i would recommend you make all the width of your site consistent by using the width tag and nested divs. For instance the left side of your title image should be in line with your left navagation box, etc. Also, align the middle div to the top so that all the divs in that section of the page are level.
  11. Well you had him sign a contract before he moved in and he has violated a bunch of the rules right? If so, you have the right it kick him out of the house and find another roommate. If you are that scared of him i would suggest kick him out and just pay a bit more rather than wait to find another rooommate. If he says you cant kick him out take it to court and photograph / get your roommate to speak out about the rules he agreed to and signed against and take him to court. Good luck and i hope goes well.
  12. I am pretty sure (but not definite) that the slope on y = xk is the derivative of xk thus it would be x*power of k thus just x. If you dont think this is right respond or atleast post that this is correct.
  13. I have always used Suse Linux ever since i started with linux. Now i use OpenSuse 10.1 and it works great. No problems no matter what you do. I even have installed XGL on my old laptop (p3 1.2 ghz and 512 ram) and it runs fine. I love the os and i use it to take notes in class and do hw for classes. I never liked Red Hat because it just didnt work for me. I just didnt like the display nor some of their features so i went to Suse. Use it and you will like it.
  14. Currently i am a student at the University of Delaware. As for a job i have / had numerous ones. Over the summer I had an internship with an internation chemical company doing IT for them which was crazy fun. Also, i worked giving tours at my school and i do the website for a local bar / restaurant. Now that school is back in session, i currently am only doing the website but will be starting to give tours soon again. Both are fun and pay for beer / pizza and any other activities i do at college.
  15. I would recommend just installing windows 2000 or so on it along with avast antivirus and windows defender just because if they only use it for internet and word processing, they probably are a novice user of a computer and will not have any knowledge to understand or work with linux. Give them what they are used to and let it be.
  16. There is no way that a desktop is obsolete. First of all, from a business it perspective, a desktop is the best thing in the world. I know most business men tend to use laptops but for anyone who has no reason for one, a desktop is much easier to secure and such because you dont have to worry about it being stolen or even it being lost and not having to worry about having to create a vpn. Desktops also are cheaper and much more powerful than a laptop of equal value. As for the home user, it depends what you use it for. If you just go online in your spare time and dont have a wireless connection, why spend more on a laptop. If you travel a lot or have a wireless network and like to surf or play games while watching tv, then a laptop definitely is the way to go.
  17. This really stinks. He was so much fun to watch on tv and even make fun of with friends. He was so energetic about nature and that was awesome. I dont know what tv will do without him
  18. Yeah i would recommend installing OpenSUSE and using their disk partitioning tools. It should recognize your SATA harddrive since it did for me. It has a very good user base so finding out how to fix problems if you dont know how is easy. Good luck and btw, my 2 year old laptop is almost identical to your desktop minus i only have 128 mb of video ram :-(
  19. First of all, for learning c/c++ jsut find a good site on goolge to learn it. I would recommend one but i learned c++ in a class with a book (yeah old fashion right?). As for programming, if you have windows just download the eclipse ide and get the CDT plugin for it. They both are completely free but make sure you follow the instructions for setting up the c compiler correctly or else nothing will be able to be compiled or ran. Good luck
  20. Thats very interesting. I am not sure how many businesses would actaully use most of those since email is a very easy server to setup. However, i guess if you just are a 2 or 3 person company then it might make sense to use gmail for your email. However google chat, calender, etc. are not very useful and there are many other free apps out their that are better in which a small business could use. Overall, its another step for google but most likely wont be a very profitable one.
  21. The first one is the better one because you can read the text better which is what you want for a profession logo. The only thing is that i would add some bezel and drop shadow effects to the text so you read it better and so it matches the circles betters. Just a suggestions.
  22. You cant just say php or jsp. You have to look at the project you are currently creating and determine what features it needs and will needs and then you choose the language to do it. For smaller projects that dont need all of the windows look-and-feel that the jsp and ajax pages allow, you would stay with php. If you get into a page like gmail, etc. that need tons of complex features, multiple developers working on the same project, etc. you would go with java because it would decrease the time it would take for a project like that to be completed as compared to using php. Finally, you also could do similar types of pages in lisp and write your lisp code so it outputs to php / c code that can be used on the web. Those are your options but you have to know exactly what the person / company wants before you choose a language.
  23. In order to get the TIVO effect of watching one channel while recording another one, you would need to have a TV Tuner card for your computer that has a dual-tuner. Basically it would have to coaxiel inputs on the card that your plug both into your tv cable. This would allow it to record on 2 stations (aka watch 1, also record on another).
  24. i completely disagree with Jimmy. If you want quality antivirus software go with Avast Home edition antivirus. It is free (unlike nortons) and it does not take up the RAM or CPU that nortons does but still does as good of a job if not better. As for a firewall, you can just use windows firewall if you are behind a router. It does enough of a job that you shouldnt worry. If you want something better go with zone alarm but it is a pain to setup correctly in order to get everything to work well.
  25. The overuse of cgi is not killing movies. The movies that are not doing well are those movies that are using cgi for effects that cgi is not ready to handle. An example of this was some of the cgi in the Matrix 2. Many of the fight scenes, you could tell that they were cgi because the jacket color changed slitely. Now that its been a few more years, those scene would not be as noticiable because they would interact flawlessly. Now the limits of cgi are being pushed much farther. If a company was willing to spend plenty more on cgi they would easily be able do those effects correctly but many try to save money on it.
