  1. it feels really nice to see the old members come by... As for the mycent update, it is run as often as possible but sometimes it can take as long as a day depending on the day & forum activity.
    See you around

I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's going slower due to caching or something. I've seen a lot of claims that it's done daily or very close to that, but my last update was 4 days after my last post, :P. Not complaining, as I'm not in a rush, just wondering if maybe this is why we often see that it takes longer.

  2. Well, you said it. If it's about earning and learning then why not learnandearn or earnandlearn. For a materialistic world out there I'd prefer the second.

I think both of those would fit, but then you run into an issue of what type of image OpaQue wants to portray. Sometimes I think he's trying to convey that this is just a community, and sometimes I think he wants it to be viewed more as a rewards platform. Having a clear understanding as to what he's trying to market the site as would help with determining what a good name for it would be.

  3. You do not need to be concerned about the amount of space that you have left because thirty six gigabytes of disk space is enough for just about any of the computer's processing needs. In fact, if you look at how much memory your computer has, the disk can swap up to eighteen times that amount to the hard disk drive if it does have a shortage of memory, theoretically speaking. While two gigabytes of memory is not much by today's standards, it should be sufficient as the recommended minimum to run Windows 7 for checking your email and browsing the Internet.

I just want to clarify something for other readers that may misinterpret this. "Swap memory" in the HDD is extremely slow (as it's reading from a HDD and that's almost always a bottleneck). If you're using a lot of swap, you will want to upgrade RAM for the speed benefits. If you're not, then the swap is really irrelevant anyways.

  4. "If someone signs up and pays via MyCents, how do you get your referral payment, via MyCents or cash deposits? And what if they pay using cash, how would you get it then?"
    Now that's a good question!
Wonder if they do it sort of like Google, when you accumilate $100 they send you a check. If that's the case, I'll certainly die of old age before I get one.
It would be a whole lot easier if it was just added to the mycents total.
I am going to look on the affiliate thing and see about signing up on it though.

Signing up is the easy part, it's getting affiliates that's tough. Especially with more savvy people as they prefer the well-known sites like GoDaddy and such.

  5. I dug threw all the things in my program list to see if something had been added, but couldn't find anything, granted, there is a lot in there I really don't have a clue as to what it is. What's even weirder, is now I'm not seeing the links I saw earlier when I made this post. I really didn't change anything.
Mrdee, good tip on spy bot. I used to have it in my previous computers, but never got around to putting it in this one.

Does the forum look the same now as it did when you saw the links? When I am logged out or on the "light" version of the site I see the linked keywords in posts.

  6. My thoughts exactly. And then you have doctors, 10s of kilos overweight, who sit there with a straight face, telling you you have to lose weight immediately.

Or the ones, stinking of booze, who would advise you not to drink.

Or even the best one, the doctor I saw, he worked in A&E at my local hospital, and he went out every so many minutes to have a cigarette.

A couple of those are a "do as I say, not as I do thing." Kind of like how people will attempt stunts on their motorcycle, knowing they could be injured and/or die from it. They know the effects and are willing to take the risks associated.

  7. We really didn't have this problem as bad when I first joined up here, but the last year things have really slowed down and there aren't a lot of new subjects started to join in on. So sometimes you have to rehash old ones when there's nothing else to talk about.

Yeah, this has been a big problem for me. There's only so much a small group of people can come up with content-wise. The lack of population makes it harder to find things to respond to, and greatly limits the responses to threads you create. I think that ends up pushing people away (seeing a forum of mostly old stuff) which just makes the situation worse.

  8. The problems are fairly new.

The HD is defragmented regularly, so that will probably not be an issue.

I also attach a spec of my video card.

Not so long ago my machine ran quite a bit faster, I used to use it as my main music recording studio machine.

Thanks for your input so far.

Sorry, you'll have to do without the spec of my AMD Radeon video card, I keep getting an error when trying to upload.

Based on this, and being that it's a computer you never know for a fact what the problem is (as parts can also go "bad" over time, more or less becoming weaker), I think you're right about it being your HDD. Adding more space should help with some problems, but defragmenting should also benefit you greatly. I'm not sure what good defragmenters are cheap (I've always been against the built-in ones because they go ridiculously slow and still aren't as efficient), so someone else might have good information on that part. I personally use Diskeeper, but I think that may be a bit overkill since you don't appear to be a hardcore developer.

I'd actually go for the defragging first and see if that solves your issues. Also, if you have old unused programs and such you don't use, clearing them off will help with space.

  9. I'm lost as to how you guys are getting caught up in this. Are you signing up to programs that say, for example, "$1 for a 30 day X" or something? Usually those will have small print that explains you're being signed up to 3rd party programs as well, and also lists their monthly costs. In the majority of cases these problems are just due to people saying "I ACCEPT!" without even reading what they're accepting.

  10. So there are many differences between our brain and a hard drive, so even if i want to format it i simply can't and this is why it is really hard to forget some bad memories. there is no defrag, no format , no delete for our brain and also there is no system restore either. we live for once and we can not delete anything, so it is better to live somehow that you never need any delete , format or defrag and it is a lot better to live somehow that you never need to wish for a system restore.

I get where you're coming from here, but at the end of the day we're all human. Sometimes I think being able to forget bad/wrong things we've done would be more destructive than remembering, as we'd be more likely to do those same wrong things over and over rather than learn from them. The things that bother us the most are the things we learn the most from.

  11. Hi,

I have a Fujitsu-Siemens P5S2D PC, which I have had for some time.

    The spec is:

    Intel Pentium 2.80 GHz processor

    2 Gb of RAM

233 Gb Seagate HDD with a measly 36 Gb of space left.

I run Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.

The thing is (as I said, I have had the machine for a while) that it is crawling along sluggishly, some applications take ages to load, streaming videos stutter and shake all over the place, and booting up, rebooting and shutting down take ages.

I was wondering, since my HDD is very low on free space, if it would help the PC's speed if I upgraded to a ! Terrabyte or bigger HDD, I assume the PC would have less problems using a bigger swapfile space then.

Of course, I am thinking of doubling my RAM to 4 Gb too, but I have done this to several machines in the past, and to be quite honest, I never noticed a significant difference.

So, am I right in thinking of getting a bigger HDD first or would that be a waste of money?

Please advise me further before, in frustration, I put my foot through the tower.

    Thank you in advance.

Really, this can go either way. Any of these items can be the cause of a bottleneck:

    Video card (onboard or separate)

    HDD

    CPU

    RAM

Your HDD might be an issue in that there's probably a lot of "fragmentation" on the system (which means files are split up all over the HDD... think of it like having a deck of cards spread all over the floor of your house. It'd take you a lot longer to pick them up like that than if they were in a single stack already. The PC has the same issue).

RAM speeds up systems if you're already using a lot of it (which is caused by the number and hunger-level of the programs you run at once).

For video stuttering, I would actually relate it more to video memory (or lack thereof, in which it would use the CPU/RAM if I remember right).

Have you had problems in the past with this stuff, or are they new problems?

  12. Hahahahahaha, LOL.But, then again, yes, I think you are not far off the real situation the way you describe it.

Another one they seem to love: "you have a cut in your finger, it won't need stitches, but I advise you to give up smoking as that is probably the cause". :D

Yes, that one is awesome too. For some reason a lot of doctors try to relate everything to smoking. I was actually told that one of my issues I went to the hospital for was due to smoking, even though I've never smoked in my life.

I do agree that smoking is bad, but the ridiculous attempt to relate absolutely everything to it just gets annoying.

  13. So if your EFC says EFC: 00000....is that bad?

In case anyone reads this later, with the EFC a lower number is better (it represents "estimated financial contribution" or something, not sure the exact term). Generally speaking, 000000 will mean that you will get the maximum allowed (between federal max or school's max, depending) financial aid.

Supposedly this isn't always the case, but in every situation I've seen it has been.

  14. They have not started me on any treatment yet, however, Amphetamines??? They are stimulants, it is my sleep pattern that needs improving.
But, as I said, once I have been to the hospital in Oxford, I will see what difference it makes to sleep while getting a constant oxygen flow.
I am a bit scared to think how I will cope as I do not lie still for 5 minutes while I am in bed, but, I'll soon see what happens.

And, yes, ONE of the reasons (not THE or THE ONLY reason) for me getting angina and heart problems might have been a lack of oxygen supply that went undetected for goodness knows how many years.

Funny it took a Romanian doctor working in England to mention having an investigation into sleep apnoea as soon as I mentioned my symptoms, while I have been complaining about my situation and my inability to stay awake to British doctors for more years than I care to remember, only to be fobbed off, no one even mentioned the word "sleep apnoea".

So, I am now awaiting my therapy and hoping for better times.

Thank you for your interest, everyone, and I'll keep you posted.

I know what you mean! Doctors usually take the "the easiest solution is probably the right one" method when dealing with problems. "Your head fell off? Take this ibuprofen and see if you feel better. In two weeks return if your situation hasn't gotten better!"

  15. I have indeed tried Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer.
Sure, the code might be basic, but any better suggestions will be welcomed, that is why I am posting here.

I took a look at different web sites explaining HTML5 and offering advice and tutorials on how to use HTML5, and, in all honesty, in practically all the places I have visited, the code is just as basic as mine.

    Thanks.

I wasn't putting down your method. I haven't really looked into how to embed videos. I was just bringing that stuff up because when I try loading those pages you linked in your posts, all the videos play flawlessly. No stuttering, no errors or anything.

  16. Well, here is a further update.

(Hope some of you are not going to say "Oh no, here we go again...", but many of you have asked to keep you posted).

Anyway, the good news was posted in a different topic, the bit about me winning my tribunal, and now being in receipt of full ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) benefit.

At least that is something positive, however, it does obviously not sort my health problems out (as you will read further on).

Now for the latest about the health situation itself:

Two weeks ago I had to go and see a doctor who is highly specialised in sleep apnoea.

    What is sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a disorder where the sufferer stops breathing several times a night, as a result the oxygen levels drop, and the patient wakes up briefly, although he/she does not necessarily notice it.

However, due to the waking up, there is a serious lack of quality sleep, because of which the sufferer can have chronic fatigue, sometimes fall asleep during the day (this could even happen while driving a car) and lacks energy and could also become very irritable.

The patient also often snores during the night.

There is no cure as such, ie. no medicines that can be prescribed or operations that can be performed to make the disease better, but there are some things that can be done to help.

Weight loss is one of the things that could help, but there are further things that can be done too, they shall be described further on.

Now, it had been suspected for some time that I suffered from the disease (and probably have done for many years) and when the doctor examined me, his suspicions became even stronger.

He then gave me a little machine that I had to strap to my arm one night and it had a tiny microphone, a sensor to put on the finger (like they put on you in a hospital to measure your oxygen levels) and a little hose attached to it, a plastic hose which you attach to the inside of your nose.

After using it for one night I had to send it back to the doctor so he could analyse the results.

I then had a phone call from the doctor, confirming I definitely suffer from sleep apnoea, so what is going to happen next is:

I will have to go to a specialised hospital in Oxford, where I will have to spend about half a day as an outpatient and be taught how to use a certain machine with an oxygen mask attached to it, which will improve the oxygen flow during the night and (hopefully) help me sleep better.

A final word about the result of the data analysis from my night, attached to the machine:

Although I had a very bad night that night, I slept very badly and very little, the doctor had found out that that particular night, I stopped breathing 33 times, and my oxygen levels dropped 69 times.

Hopefully the treatment will help me lead a more normal and relaxed life.

I'm glad you're able to find help with your problems! Sleep apnea is something I think I'd have problems coping with. I know of others that have it and also have the oxygen tank with mask, but I roll around so often while I sleep I'd be afraid to choke myself with it, tear it, etc.

  17. But sometimes you find a meaning less topic where you can not decide whether the starter of topic was trying to spam or he/she can not write english very well.

I run into this so often online, and it always makes me second guess what's going on. Kind of like in games, I've had people send me private messages that seem like spam, and then I realize the person just isn't able to convey their idea/question properly. That's a big problem with the world of spam we deal with every day, and it's especially problematic on things like forums and blog comments. I've probably mis-flagged a few people in the past thinking they were spamming when they weren't.

Things that catch my eye the easiest are way off-topic statements. Like having a forum area about dogs and someone commenting with "how 2 fix my ps2" or linking to a site for some type of software. Generally these things I'll flag.

  18. The image from the original post has been removed so I am not really sure of the ideas that wre suggested, but I have a few ideas of my own. The traditional classroom sitting has pretty much the same seating arrangement as somebody who would attend a concert or an opera, minus the balconies. With all the seats facing forward, there is the best chance of fitting as many people as possible within the confines of a room in a reasonably organized manner. The next best thing would be to position the seats around the instructor such that there is about a 120 degree field of view for the instructor of the class and the students in the front-row face the instructor instead of having the students turn to look at the instructor and possibly result in neck fatigue or cramps. Finally, a couple of round tables within the classroom and chairs surrounding each of the tables is a great environment for collaborative work. It is difficult to adapt to different modes of teaching because of the time required to shift a group between different layouts or classrooms, so perhaps it would help if the classrooms were determined based on the contents of a session, and the sessions are planned such that minimal changes to the layout are required.
BTW, has anyone else used an overhead projector for transparencies? Those may be going the way of the dinosaur, but there are so many of them still in existence and the classroom layout has to be planned in a manner that those overhead projectors can be used because no matter where an instructor stands, he or she would be blocking the view of the material for at least some of the students, unless the instructor is standing right at the back of the class with the projector, in which case the layout would have to ensure that the distance between the front and the rear of the classroom is not too much to cause the image of the overhead projector to go past the floor and the ceiling.

Modern classrooms typically have a ceiling-mounted projector and projects the image from a computer so the instructor can sit in a corner of the room and convey instructions while using visual aids to illustrate or point, or put up slides of bullet points to help in delivering the content.

In my recent classes overheads were no longer used, however there is a "newer" system out that consists of a touch-screen (with pen for writing) and a projector (or 2-3 depending) to display the contents on the wall. Most of the classes also had a type of camera attached so you could slide things under it and show them on the walls as well (for writing, demonstrations, etc.).

So overheads aren't "gone," per se, but they have evolved!

  19. The 8MB is a limitation of the maximum upload size set by the server php.ini and in a shared hosting you can't change that as you know. Inside Moodle, the settings of the maximum file upload will be always limited to that php.ini configuration.
The best practice for backing up Moodle courses with large size of resources is to do the backup in several parts, that's to say backup topics 0-3 for example, then topics 4-7 and so on. Making sure that each back up part is less than the 8MB limitation. Restoring those parts will be done easily without errors.

Copying the course files doesn't work in versions after Moodle .9 because files are no more visible in the data directory and consequently any work you do with the database in terms of updating tables will be pointless and might result in database errors and breaking of the db integration.

From an amateur developer point of view I was very happy with Moodle 1.9 because I was able to tweak it anyway I like but in Moodle 2 I still have a lot to learn. From an administrator point of view Moodle 2 is much much better.

    Got ya!

Wouldn't just backing up the entire database manually (via phpmyadmin) work fine for avoiding that limitation? Then you can keep the entire backup in one file and not have to worry so much (for the database). The files could just be copied as well, or use cPanel to do an entire site backup.

Not sure what you meant by files not being visible in the data directory anymore but I'd think a full site backup would cover anything and everything.

  20. I have now made a test page at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and it seems to work when it wants to.Sometimes DivX interferes with it, sometimes it doesn't.

Yet the code for the page is short and contains just enough code for one film:

    <table border="0" width="100%"><tr> <td><div align="center"><a name="Dancing">Dancing</a><br />Een blik in de toekomst.<br>The future foretold.<br>Dit is hoe onze dancings en discotheken er over een tiental jaar zullen uitzien:<br>This is what our discos will look like in about 10 years time:<br><video width="450" height="300" controls="controls"><source src="onzedancingsbinnen10jaar.mp4" type="video/mp4"><source src="onzedancingsbinnen10jaar.ogg" type="video/ogg"><source src="onzedancingsbinnen10jaar.webm" type="video/webm">Your browser does not support the video tag.</video><br /><a href="#Top">Weer naar boven/Back to top</a></div></td></tr></table>

Yet the page still sometimes gives an indication that Shockwave Flash has crashed, although it is not involved.

I have the feeling this problem is related to the browser you're using or your specific codecs. Have you tried multiple browsers to see how they react?

I came to this conclusion based on how "basic" the code is. It's leading me to believe that your PC is the one choosing how to handle the video.

  21. Different motherboard manufacturers build their board slightly differently. There are reference implementations for them to treat as guidelines as they build motherboards to match the processors that they are being built for, but beyond that, they get to build the motherboards as they see fit.

This makes sense. Another PC I have had a bad RAM stick and the PC would run fine, as long as it didn't use more than X RAM (ex. it had 2GB so if it stayed below about 1.3G it was fine, any over that and it'd BSOD or just restart). In my current one it won't even try to start, post or anything.
