  1. Yeah, it seems to me like the page started off somewhere where it should have been, but then as things got added to the front page nothing was removed. Maybe all it really needs is a little pruning, although updating the design wouldn't be a bad idea either. The design as it is kind of gives the site a dated feel.
  2. Actually, learning basic first for someone who is not naturally inclined to programming could be a fatal (in terms of your programming career) mistake. The syntax of BASIC is very much different from the syntax of C++ because C++ is object oriented and BASIC was not originally. BASIC's latest generation versions have object oriented features, however the syntax is very much different than that of other languages. In addition, BASIC encourages the use of some control structures that are either disallowed or are bad conventions in other languages. If you learn BASIC before you learn something like C++ or Ruby or Java then you may learn some bad habits that you can't break.
  3. 0_0 Java Script and PHP are not comparable, they are apples and oranges. Javascript is a client-side language to handle dynamic changes on a page, PHP is a server-side language to handle processing information. Most of the time, you need both of these.Client-Side means that it is run by the user's computer, therefore the performance is dependent on the user's machine. Since Client-Side performance is not as consistent as Server-Side performance, you would use Client-Side only when you are doing something that Server-Side cannot do, for instance if you want to change the information on a page after the browser is done 'talking' to the server, you would use JavaScript to re-initiate the 'conversation' between Server and Client.Server-Side means it is run by the server. Since Server-Side performance is consistent, you generally want to keep as much as possible on the server side (this is for security reasons as well.) unless you are concerned with killing your server, but at that point I would say just go get a better server. Server-Side is used to process data, especially data that will be shared across many clients. The great thing about PHP/ASP/.NET is that no matter what your code is, in the end all it sends to the client is Hypertext. So you use PHP to retrieve information from the database to show to the client, for example. As you can see, there is something fundamentally wrong with your question if you are asking whether you should use JavaScript or PHP/ASP/.NET
  4. Actually, I think that the OP has a very good point. Shouldn't it be possible to change the permissions on the application section such that only moderators and admins can see existing topics? I know that other forum softwares can do it. I don't have much particular experience with IPB, but it should be alright. Just set "Can view topics" to no and "Can post new topics" to yes.
  5. Haha, yeah I know what you mean. It is very disorganized indeed. There's definitely way too much stuff going on there XD I don't think it would be a bad idea to go through an re-do the website. After all, it takes more than a name change to be a different place
  6. Well, in the near future I can't see Microsoft losing it's customer base. The fact remains that Windows has by far the greatest program base, it's easy as crap to set up and run, and everyone likes Microsoft Office. Sure some of us go out and get Open Office, but that isn't what most are doing.
  7. Longhorn was just the codename for the Windows Vista and Server 2008 projects until they decided on a name, if I am not mistaken. Now, if this midori deal happened, how would this work with the whole net-neutrality issue if it continues? Would we have to pay first for internet access, then for access to this midori, and then for a license for midori? If Microsoft switched to Midori and the ISPs charged more on top of the license fee, guess what! Everyone's moving to Linux!' I think that this would be a bad business choice for Microsoft to stop on Windows. They should just make a windows that everyone will like! Windows 95 was great, 98 was great, 2000 went over well, NT was... ehh. XP went over well. I personally have not used Vista, so I don't know what problems, if any, there are with it but I know that a lot of people seem unhappy with it. Either way, they should just make the next ones better for people and they'd be good to go.
  8. Now, if pygame is as similar to Rubygame as I think it is, I bet you you are missing some dlls. Why don't you tell us exactly what errors you are getting?
  9. Heh, for me my skill just kind of comes and goes in cycles. There might be a period of a month where I get 23 kills before I die, then a month where I die 23 times without killing anyone. Perhaps you are experiencing the same sort of thing. Try playing a different game for a while. Believe it or not it could help. Sometimes just playing with a slightly different cotnrols and weapons and on new maps could make you step up your game. I was playing CoD and was getting like a 0.5 KD ratio, I stopped playing and played another game for a while and when I went back I was getting like 17 kills and 2 deaths.
  10. This is a very interesting idea. I personally like it, however I don't think it is all that plausible. It would be very difficult to organize that. I think it's best the way it is done now where people can just ask questions inside the tutorial itself.
  11. Ruby is a good language to start with too. The syntax is very similar to python. I would recommend learning either Python or Ruby to learn programming concepts, and then learn the syntax of C++ and the extra concepts that C++ has that others do not.
  12. So if you type in Open Discussion Free Web Hosting then you get Xisto on google? Yeah, that seems like great SEO! Seriously, the name Open Discussion is very bland, uninspired and generic. If you don't want to use the name of the website (Which really seems like the best idea, even if you want to leave out the web hosting, "Trap 17 - Forums" would suit quite well) at least pick a name that isn't so "so what?"
  13. Haha, nice. I actually forgot to post it on our site. Well I am working on DeM0nFiRe's Irrlicht Test Bed 2 V1.0.0 now, so I should have more soon. The reason I am making a completely new version branch for this (I.e., this new one is Test Bed 2 v1 not Test Bed V2) is because the old one was programmed very messily and so I am starting a new one from scratch. Hopefully within a couple weeks I should have more to show you guys!
  14. Right, if they want to come up with a better name for the forums than Xisto Free Webhosting, then they should go for it. However, "Open Discussion" is certainly not that better title.
  15. Right, I agree. The use of these private servers should not be condoned. It's illegal, it's immoral and it's unfair to game Developers and Gamers alike.
  16. Ok, I can see why you'd want to change the name. However, "Open Discussion"? Come on, you guys can do better than that. The name of the site is not Open Discussion, it's Xisto. As previously suggested Xisto Open Discussion would make more sense, but even that is so cliched. Calling it Open Discussion is so bland, who is that title supposed to appeal to? It seems like you are trying to appeal to everyone, but what is going to happen isthat it will appeal to very few. I mean, who is going to do a google search for Open Discussion and happen to come across Xisto and just say "Oh hey, I've been loooking for a forum with absolutely no central idea!" You should me up with a name with some sparks on it, something interesting.Otherwise, calling it "Open Discussion" just kind of makes it sound really generic. You guys want to sound like you are Open-Minded, Accomodating to many tastes. You don't want to sound like you are generic. You don't have to pick a central idea, you can pick many central ideas if you want (which is what I assume you want) "Open Discussion" seems more of just a lazy way to describe the site rather than something to call the site.
  17. I think that changing it is a bad idea simply because we're used to it being called one thing. There is no practical reason for changing the name, but there is a reason to keep it as the 'Free Webhosting, No Ads.' The title is more descriptive and makes it more obvious what is on the task bar.
  18. Right, Right, I don't actually expect him to start making games. However, if he even started a game he'd see that it ain't easy and perhaps he'd appreciate it more. Just a fool's folly, however. I know full well he'll not pay attention to a single word we've said. (Which is evident in the fact he still doesn't see that it is stealing 0_0)And, you're right, this does not belong in game development. One thing that really pisses me off is the fact that this is here. This crap should not be associated with the hard work that actual Game Developers put in.
  19. Ahh, nice list. I wasn't even aware they had separate names for SAN MAN DAN and CAN. I would probably call them all LAN or WLAN (I guess it's a WAN in the case of MAN)
  20. Ok, so maybe this is more a question than a suggestion. What exactly was the point of changing the Xisto Forum title to Open Discussion? The title of the site is very clearly not Open Discussion so why call it that? You're confusing some multi-taskers over here! I can't find the Xisto No Ads, Free Hosting tab in my taskbar anymore!
  21. If you don't like the rules of a game, I have an idea for you: It IS stealing. It is the very frigging definition of stealing. You are taking a program you did not write and using graphics you did not make and using them in a way you do not have permission to do.If you think all of the games around suck then stop being lazy and make your own freaking game. If you insist that you can do better, do better with your own game. Stop stealing the hard work of others. It is people like you that make it impossible to create a society that can actually work together. Every time someone puts in some hard work, you come in and undermine it all.
  22. What he does is illegal and is the bane of Gamer-Corporation relations. What he does should not be condoned. This just justifies all of the security measurements companies take that make it hard for us to play games.
  23. I see that AVG Antivirus has been mentioned. DON'T GET IT! It's awful! Comodo Anti-Virus is better than most commercial Anti-viruses and it's free!Graphics Gale is a great alternative to any pixel art program like Paint.
  24. Thank you for the support on this one, travstatesmen. You are actually being more lenient with your argument than you should be. In actuality many TOS say that you give them a lot of your rights over any content you post.Yai64, you are hurting players by forcing game companies to up their security and up their prices for games.
  25. What pisses me off the most is not the fact that it is illegal, it is the fact that you are hurting gamers and game developers by pulling this crap. You only give a crap about yourself and no one else. You'd better not ever complain about game development companies making their terms of use more strict, because it is your own fault.
