  1. Yup the permission denied is definitely CHMOD issues..
  2. Nope. To install SMF, first you got to manually create a database for SMF and an user with ALL permissions granted. You will find another icon called MySQL Databases in cPanel. Use that to perform these ops. Now supposing your cpanel username is weaponx, any database/user that you create will be prefixed with weaponx_ Example: I want to create a db named smfdb and the user as smfusr - when I use that cPanel tool to create these two.. the outcome will be - Database: weaponx_smfdb Username:weaponx_smfusr You've to use these values in the SMF setup options in order to enable SMF connect to your db properly... 3. Hehe - tell me what do you do with you system. Those core files are generated only when you seemingly do the impossible - i.e. crash linux programs a whole lot.. Core files are memory dumps containing traces of stack/heap and other memory segments + system registers. Usually when some application or process crashes - it generates one of those core dump files - numbered with whatever it can find next in the sequence. The most common way to generate a core dump is to run some app in one virtual console and then from another console use KILL to terminate it. Try that with your X-Server Quite often that app would exit leaving behind a core dump file. A hardcore coder armed with suitable debuggers might be able to take a peek into them and figure out what caused the crash, by tracing through those values (trying to simulate the exact conditions in general)... A normal user wouldn't have any use for them... Just get rid of all of them - do a rm -f core.* But am still interested to know how you managed to generate so many core dumps ?? I use linux quite extensively - and I fool around with the system even more ending up trashing it every so often - but even then, I rarely manage to generate more than a couple of core dumps... lol.. how did u get so many all with the same timestamp ? Regards, m^e
  4. Yup.. that can be done. In your cPanel you'll find an icon named File manager. You can either use that to upload files or use a web-based ftp client (example: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) - if your workplace blocks ftp. Once uploaded, you can use the same cPanel file manager and click on your file. Once clicked you'll be presented with certain actions you can perform on that file or folder. These actions include, Copying/Moving/Deleting/Renaming & UNZIPPING. Simply click on Unzip and it'll decompress your file into the containing directory. Be a little careful here, as it might flood your containing folder with the files in the zip - if they're not packed neatly into separate folders.. Regards, m^ew
  5. This thread is being closed as we've implemented a links directory details of which can be found at: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/85041-topic/?findpost=1064311267 All sites mentioned in this thread will be automatically listed in that directory. For any new submissions - feel free to drop by at the directory and suggest your own site. Regards, m^e
  6. Hi guys, I'm happy to announce that we've successfully implemented a Web-directory which isl soon to index all the pages hosted at Xisto by our members. This directory will contain: Links to the all member pages (those who do not wish their pages listed has to let us know) Links to the best (handpicked) tutorials on our forums on a wide variety of computing topics. Links to the cool tips & tricks (software, web-design, etc.) posted in our forums. Right now - all we've to offer are a couple of sections on Tutorials, Tips & Tricks & Personal Homepages. We'll keep adding more categories as we grow. The directory itself is searchable like google and is open for suggestions for both Categories and New Links. A couple of special features worth mentioning are: a. Ability to rank each listed site by visitors b. Automatic Google Page Rank display beside each listed site c. Ability to register yourself in the directory and add/edit/maintain your own links. Feel free to drop by and check it out at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ - All are welcome N.B.:As a footnote I'd like to add that those who'd listed their site in the previous thread have been automatically added to the directory listing. As for the rest, you're required to create your own listings there - and when you do so, you'll be prompted with a field called Reciprocal Link - this is the link to your page or part of your page, where we can find a link back to the Xisto forums. This link on your page should be titled: Best Free Webhosting. This is a small favour we ask of you in return. Regards, m^e
  7. My way of pampering is not through accessorizing - but rather slapping on more ram, hdd, better sound+video card .. i.e. constantly improving on the present configuration as and when I can..
  8. Ooops.. a lot of this happened during the server crash and shifting of all member data to a different server. That made the figures reset in a weird way. Sorry abou the inconvenience. It'll be fixed as soon as OpaQue's here... :lol:Regards,m^e
  9. Did you create the database for vBulletin properly? Keep one thing in mind: when you create a database here on Xisto, all dbs and usernames are prefixed with your cpanel username. Say your cpanel login is artluo and you want to create a db called "vbdb" with a user named "vbuser" .. in effect, Your db name will be: artluo_vbdb Your username will be: artluo_vbuser You have to reflect these in the config.php (or some similar file_ - that accompanies most forum softwares - it is this file that contains the database name+username+password to enable the forum sw to connect to the database properly. Just cross check on this and let me know by return post. Regards, m^e
  10. Haha.. nice scryoko, on behalf of the Xisto staff I extend a really warm welcome to you. Hopefully we'll see some cool creative posts from you as soon as you revive from the writers block :lol:And don't worry about rambling on and on - in this place, the more you ramble - people get to know u much quicker .. and then starts the real fun We've got a ultracool bunch in here.. dive right inRegards,m^e
  11. Yup weaponX is right - at max you need 5 credits to revive your account - but you have to give it about an hour to restart. The credits system checks all the accounts on an hourly basis and takes suitable action depending on the amount of credits you have... If you've already acquired the needed credit amount then your account should be up and working by now.Regards,m^e
  12. Hi there Kevin - welcome to Xisto and have a great stay..Regards,m^e
  13. Not really - by being reviewed we mean that we simply check up on whether you got sufficient credits prior to allocating hosting space to you.Now - when you create either of package 1 or 2 - your hosting credits get reset to around 3 irrespective of how much you might have. So if you're going on a vacation - better idea is to come back and apply. That way you can carry on from that point - or else, as soon as you create your account, your credits will start their countdown march :lol:Once below zero credits, your hosting account gets suspended on it's own and comes back up as soon as you make posts again and have more than 5 creds in your account. If it drops below -30 then hosting account is auto-cancelled and you have to re-apply again.Regards,m^e
  14. Hi, This is to inform you all that the most of server problems we were suffering from past few days have been resolved - and hence we're happy to announce that we've started approving New Hosting Account Requests. Those who'd had read the earlier announcement and have managed to accumulate over 30 Hosting Credits will be entitled to receive the Regular Package (#2) with more diskspace and bandwidth directly. Those who just missed it - I'd advice you to make some more posts and apply for the regular package directly. Happy Hosting :lol:Regards,m^e
  15. See you've been constantly disregarding the Rules in here - as a result you've lost a tremendous amount of credits. It's clearly stated that when you copy some article/code from another site, you're supposed to put that whole copied block between QUOTE tags. the credit system parses your message accordingly and allots you the correct amount of credits. If you don't put that part amid QUOTE tags, it means that you're trying to fool the credit system in believing that the whole article is written by you and that it should alot you full credits for it. That's what is considered as SPAM here and you've lost a whole bunch of credits because of that. Your post: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/82409-topic/?findpost= was like that - you posted a huge block of code from another site without Quoting. You lost 16 Credits for that - as you'll notice if you read that post again. And today you've done it again - http://forums.xisto.com/topic/6273-topic/ - even in this post you've copied code from the Codewalkers site without putting it in quotes. Lets see how much you loose out on that. From now on be careful - keep in mind what I said.. otherwise you'll always end up loosing massive amounts of credits like this... Regards, m^e
  16. The databases and username at Xisto are prefixed with your subdomain name by default, i.e supposing you chose cookie.astahost.com as your subdomain, and you chose "mydb" and "myadmin" and your dbname and user - your database would be named as:cookie_mydb and username would be:cookie_myadminYou'll have to update your PHP script to reflect these changes - only then you'll be able to connect to your db successfully.Regards,m^e
  17. Yup - absolutely.. But before that, you'd have to apply for something called SOA (Start Of Authority) - which I mentioned in the above post. Once you have that, when someone types your domain name, the resoltuion request is directly transfered to your own nameservers from the root-level nameservers... At that point - it's completely on your own nameservers as to how they resolve that www or www2 .. or xyzabc.. in short it depends totally on how your configure your nameserver to handle that CNAME. Yup - you're right again. The https stands for HTTP Secure - and you'll find it on loads of sites these days, specifically sites that handle monetary transactions. Normally your browser <--> Web Site data transfers happen in plain text. If someone has adequate skills and tools (packet sniffers) one can intercept personal/private information that you might be sending over to these sites. That includes Credit Card numbers, Passwords or any other private information that you don't want the world to know about... HTTPS takes care of this - by encrypting the data at your browser end using a public key - which is then decrypted at the server end using its own private key.. These keys come in the form of what we commonly call "Certificates" these days. The concept of certificates arose, coz anyone with malintent can create his own certificate and fool you into believing that you're entering a valid site... So a couple of certificate authorities were brought into existence - and as a rule, any site claiming to be secure obtains their certificates from these certification authorities - just a kind of a measure to establish some global standards on this issue. It's SSL security all the way Regards, m^e
  18. Cool.. Welcome to Xisto, Quadfreek. You'll find a terrific community in here - jump right in and join in on all the fun :lol:Hope you have a great stay with up here at Xisto..Regards,m^e
  19. heh.. pity you guys - schools at this part of the world are entirely powered by pirated software no one gives a damn about licensing stuff... lol.. i know it's nothing to laugh about - but considering how strict it is over there at your end, can't help it
  20. Yep - you can. BUT, CONDITION: If audio files - they must be either your OWN composition or a production of your Group/Band. No ILLEGAL mp3s or audio files in other format are permitted. In case you want to put up some audio file of some other artist - you'll have to provide us with a copy of your license/public distribution rights stating so. Same applies to Video files - as long as they are authentic works, shot by your and not copyrighted by someone else, you can host them here. We treat copyright violations in a very strict manner - and if found doing so, you'll be banned immediately - NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Regards, m^e
  21. Err.. this is going to be rather long and confusing - unless you've got some clear-cut idea about how DNS server's resolve names. Still, I'll try to make it as simple and short as possible.. Lets take for example a website named http://abc.go.com/ Now you surely know that .com/.net/.org etc. are termed as TLDs or Top Level Domains - that's what you purchase (or rather lease) from ICANN. Along with a .com/.net etc you also specify a proper domain name that either matches your product or company.. or the theme of your website in general.. so in this case, say, we purchase the name abcd.com.. When you type this name in a browser it first contacts the root nameservers and tries to resolve this name to a corresponding IP address. If it is listed in the roots, good enough - or else the request is redirected to other nameservers which may further redirect it to others.. or as a base case to your own name servers - if you have them up and running (only possible if you've been granted a SOA or Start Of Authority by the root servers).. Order of resolution is right to left: http://abc.go.com/: .com --> .abcd --> www Now, this www part before your domain name is known as the CNAME or Canonical Name. You'll notice, that both http://abc.go.com/ and simply http://abc.go.com/ will take you to the same place. When a connection finally manages to reach your own server through a chain of resolutions as said above - it almost invariably connects to abcd.com and NOT http://abc.go.com/.. Behind the screens, http://abc.go.com/ is actually made to point to abcd.com while, abcd.com itself points to your server's WAN(internet) IP address. So http://abc.go.com/ --> abcd.com --> IP address Now this CNAME is almost always www as an adopted standard, coz it's easy to remember as well as its an abbreviation for the World Wide Web. This www is actually COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT. As long as you have your own DNS server's running, you can instruct it to resolve ANYTHING in the CNAME part - ANYTHING I repeat.. it could very well be http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, or http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or even http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ - this "www" means absolutely NOTHING. (At the same time - do not confuse it with a subdomain). As I said earlier, since this is a world-wide adopted standard almost any and every web-site uses the www.. but occasionally some sites use www1 or www2 or even www9 ... whatever they feel like using. The crux of the matter is, that your own DNS servers should have a record of this wwwX name and be able to resolve it to the right IP/Server... That's all... Sorry I couldn't come up with anything simpler than this.. maybe someone else can explain it in a better and clearer manner..
