  1. The drama continues. Thanks for the kind support St.Mike. However, the eMachine bit the dust. I guess it was more slightly abused than slightly used. It crashed the other night. Had to take it back and get a refund. To add to my distress I have been struggling to get on line with the old puter. Things got changed on it somehow and the connection got screwed up. Just finally got it configured right. I don't know exactly what I did. BUT, here I am.

Plan B: Upgrade the puter I have, if possible. Want to get a new larger hard drive with Windows XP, more memory, faster processor, and slave the present hard drive. It is with total frustration that I have turned to this plan.

The guys where I have been doing business are very co-operative so far. The only hurdle is whether or not the upgrade is possible. They will have to take a look inside the PC unit to see. Of course, this will keep me off line for a while again. I need to get some on-line business done before I turn it over to them, however.

  2. ***big hugs** Mich does any of your computers have USB on them at all? If os you can move your smaller files over and stuff and not worry about the CD's. As for a the temporary slave, you could get a hard drive enclosure that has a USB connection and that way you can connect your hard outside your computer and move stuff that way as well.

Both puters have USB ports, but I wouldn't know what to do with them. I am still going back to see how to slave the other hard drive temporarily. I have a iOmega Zip drive that operates on both puters, which is another way to transfer stuff, as well. It uses the parallel printer port. I have most of my stuff backed up on the Zip drive disks, so that helps a lot. I have 2 flash/thumb drives, but there isn't a driver on the puter running Windows 98.

I am back on line anyway and that is what counts. The eMachine now has a read/write CD drive now without the DVD. The combo driver was bad. Oh well, I didn't want to watch DVDs on my puter anyway. It just happened to be on the machine.

Setting up the new puter to suit me is very time consuming. I can just go so long before I have to take a break. Been at it most of today. Installed as many programs as I could from their original CDs. Then I have to configure all the programs over again. :D What a chore.

Thanks everybody for the support. Switching the monitor was a good idea, dwolters. The problem was solved with a used monitor that cost me only $33.00. Hubby needed a monitor of his own since he likes to be on the puter at the same time I am. When I finally get things all transfered and reconfigured, we will both be happy campers. He also likes the idea that he can get on line on his puter if and when he likes. That is, unless I am on line :D . We aren't even thnking of networking them. We know it can be done, but decided against it.

  4. Well, here I go venting again. Got a new (slightly used) eMachine with twice the memory and 4 times the hard-drive space. OK, so we have 2 monitors, no problem, right? Uh-huh! When I hooked the old puter up to the extra monitor, it couldn't handle the colors and resolution. So we have to switch the monitor to whichever puter we want to use.

So I set out to configure my eMachine to ready it for transfering files from old puter. The eMachine combo read/write CD DVD drive doesn't seem to like the CDs I burned on the old puter to transfer stuff. Since the old puter's OS is Windows 98 and the eMachine's is Windows XP transfer software won't work. So now all my "stuff" is locked up on the other hard-drive. I called the shop where I got the eMachine and was told there is a way to temporarily "slave" the old hard-drive to the eMachine. He is going to show me how to do it. That will be some trick! :D

Then we have the monitor issue. I guess I can either buy a slightly used monitor or perhaps I might indulge myself with what I saved not having to buy a brand new puter, and get myself a new monitor. :D Then the old one can stay with the old puter for hubby to use.

BTW: I also got a slightly use printer to replace the one that decided not to auto-feed anymore. And, I am taking the eMachine back to the shop for them to check out the combo read/write CD DVD drive.

  10. In my opinion horse racing itself is not cruel. It is the uncaring owners and trainers that race horses starting at such a young age that is the problem. For those of you who are not racing fans, at this year's Kentucky Derby, the second place horse (a filly named Eight Belles) broke down on the track just after crossing the finish line. She fractured both of her front ankles and was euthanized on the spot.

Horses that are raced before their bones are fully developed and their joints have closed, break down from the stress of racing all too frequently. The sport has allowed for the racing of horses during their second year. In most cases, this is before they have developed strong enough legs to hold up under the pounding on the track.

I try to watch the Breeder's Cup program every year and it becomes a tragedy before the day is over. Young horses break down throughout the day and I find myself shouting at the TV when this happens. "Why do you fools insist on racing such young horses?" Of course then I am watching through tears. The owners are in it for the money and most of them view the horses as a commodity rather than a living, breathing animal. This just sickens me.

I am not a PETA supporter, but maybe they can do something to change the conditions under which these animals are expected to race. The Kentucky Derby has always been a race for 3-year-olds. The long-standing tradition (since 1875) will probably never be changed. But since a young horse must qualify for the derby they are raced as 2-year-olds to establish this qualification. There-in lies the cruelty. Horses that young should not be raced.

"The entire Churchill Downs Incorporated family -- as well as the horse racing industry -- has been devastated by Eight Belles? tragic accident following her courageous performance in Kentucky Derby 134. With all of the advancements made by our industry to improve the overall health and welfare of Thoroughbred racehorses, losing a competitor like Eight Belles will never be easy or acceptable. While injuries like the kind Eight Belles experienced are extremely rare -- even one is too many -- and public reaction is understandable given the fact that her accident was seen by millions of people following world's most famous and most watched horse race. We extend our deepest sympathy to Eight Belle's owners, trainer and jockey for their loss, and we join the entire horse racing industry in looking for ways to prevent catastrophic injuries in the racehorses that are the very heart of our sport.

-- Bob Evans, President and CEO, Churchill Downs Incorporated

I find this statement by Bob Evans a flowery cover-up made in order to ignore the real issue at hand. I point to the fact that the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner (a colt named Barbaro) was also euthanized because of injury suffered when he broke down during the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes. Story.

  15. Yeh, it would help knowing if it is a male or female. I won't suggest anything specific since I don't know which it is. How about finding a neat name that strikes you on a map. Sometimes a little-known city, town, or village name can offer unique ideas for you. If this was a single birth, perhaps something to do with being one of a kind might do as well. I tend to think along more unconventional paths.

  16. Since I have never been out of the USA, except through Canada and Canadian waters, I have to say hands down mine is Yosemite National Park. The natural formations there just blow my mind. It is so beautiful it almost makes me cry. I have been in Yellowstone, Bryce and Grand Canyons, Zion, Kodachrome Valley, Arches, Muir Woods, the Redwoods, Glacier Bay, Glacier Park, Mammoth Caves, Lake Tahoe, all the Great Lakes and many more parks, but my heart belongs in Yosemite. I am strictly an outdoors lover.

  18. At least you had the brains enough to know not to participate in such a stunt. You could not control what the others did, so don't take any blame. You are right, she could have been killed. I know a young girl who did a similar thing; sat on the hood of the car while it was in motion. She took a tumble on concrete. After several surgeries she has suffered permanent brain damage.

This should be a lesson well learned by all of the people involved. Especially the driver. She must take the responsibility here as she used the vehicle for a toy. Any kind of engine driven, driver operated vehicle is not something to play with. I really think she should have had her license suspended and required to go to some kind of driver training course.

I hope this experience doesn't haunt you for too long. It will take a while to push back in your thoughts, but never forget it all together. Just learn to live with it. My prayers are with the injured girl.
