1. That Library computer may have been firewalled, but I think probably they had images controlled on it to avoid 'Adult' material from coming through.

In Browsers, there are privacy and security settings which stop various features on the machine.

In a public setting, or if childen are using the computer, it might be a good thing.

On a Mac using IE5, select edit > preferences > security zones or ratings.

On a Windows 98se O/S using IE, select tools > internet options > security or content.

On Mozilla Browsers, edit > preferences > privacy&security > images

Where those settings are in the various browser, who knows?

AHA, so I guess I can take down that warning/suggestion. I took a look and you can configure the browser not to show any graphics/images. I guess that was to protect the children from possible unpleasant pictures at sites they might stumble on. THANKS!

I find it interesting that you posted this item. I put it up on the net on my father's site Sat, 12 Mar, 2005. This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a local newspaper. Give credit where credit is due. You didn't come up with this. Where did you get it?

    Finally, Someone Has Said It

Take a look at my rendition.

  3. By the way, just a comment about this:

Who do you think is going to go to the trouble of turning their firewall off just to see graphics on your site? Why can't you get your graphics to view properly despite firewall settings? No-one else seems to have any trouble.

    219898

I have no idea why, but when I tried to pull up my site at a library in DeSmet, South Dakota, USA, last spring, the pages came up without the graphics on one of their puters, but when I tried another, everything was up fine. The librarian said they had a special Fire Wall on the first puter because that was the one they let young children use. So I assumed that was the problem and warned against it. It certainly isn't the fault of my graphics, if that is what you are implying. How could you possibly know that "no-one else" has any trouble? Hey, I am learning a lot from exchanges on this forum, perhaps you have another suggestion as to what the problem was. I am self taught and doing the best I can. I have a lot to learn about all this technology, but I am trying my best. Please don't rain on my parade. :) Thanks for the example of the css file. I guess I need to purchase a new web designing book, the one I have addresses css, but not xhtml.

  4. However, my mother in law has a big gambling problem and it has come to the point where she has started lying to the family about where her money goes.  This has caused a major headace for me because I am now the one stuck supporting her.

Does anyone else have any problems like this with their family members?

    215901

Well, with an ex family member. My ex lost everything including the respect of his daughter. He has been barred from our local casino. He was in Real Estate Sales until his gambling led to intermingling moneys. I hadn't talked to him for over 20 years, but he took it upon himself to call me and ask to borrow $1,000 to save his business, yeh, sure. Like I wanted to get involved. My present husband about blew the roof off. Nobody, including his sister and our daughter has heard from him in over a year. :) Last we heard the police were looking for him. He must still be alive somewhere or somebody would have contacted his sister or daughter by now. It is such a shame that gambling can get to people to this extent, isn't it?

  5. Are you talking about " or " ? Are the quote marks in your actual content (e.g. "he said blah") or are they used in your tags (e.g. <input type="text" ... )?

    219833

Never mind. It is lack of them that it is complaining about. It also seems that I have attributes in my HTML, that XHTML wants put in a ccs file. I run my stuff through CSE HTML Validator and it comes up clean. Their validator is really strict.

Error Line 13 column 27: an attribute value must be a literal unless it contains only name characters.

    <BODY text="#d1a9d5" vLink=#808080 alink="#d1a9d5" link="#d1a9d5" bgColor="#0129" background="gardenia/gardenia_maincolor.jpg">

You have used a character that is not considered a "name character" in an attribute value. Which characters are considered "name characters" varies between the different document types, but a good rule of thumb is that unless the value contains only lower or upper case letters in the range a-z you must put quotation marks around the value. In fact, unless you have extreme file size requirements it is a very very good idea to always put quote marks around your attribute values. It is never wrong to do so, and very often it is absolutely necessary. (IT IS REFERING TO #808080 WHICH IS NOT IN QUOTES)

BUT I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS ONE! Since when can't you put background in a table?

Error Line 17 column 77: there is no attribute "BACKGROUND".

    <table cellspacing=0 cellpadding=1 width="100%" bgcolor="#D3C177" background="gardenia/gardenia_goldstrip.jpg" border=0>

    go to W3C

click on the HTML Validator in left column under W3C AtoZ

Put your url in the appropriate box and see what you get. It is really scary.

  6. :P:P:P Hurray. :):P:P I finally got my dot com started. Thanks to Trap 17 I have a home for my site again. My old host, pooof, disappeared from the internet, never to be found again. It will take me while to rebuild it, but at least I have a start. Will try to add things daily until I get it all back in working order. I have over 100 web sets and oodle of background images and tiles. Will be adding desktop/wallpapers as well after I restore all my current files.

    Come watch it happen!!!!

  7. I have gone over to W3C and W3 School to try to bring myself up to date on XHTML. When I use their on site validator, it just doesn't like all the quotation marks in the body of my work. :P I get a tremendous amount of errors all pointing at quotation marks in the body. I get the impression that using them is passe'. Is this true? :) Could somebody please tell me where I can get a HTML software that either doesn't use quotation marks, or has an option to not use them? I am currently using Cute HTML LE and cannot find an option to not use the quotes.

  8. I was looking through your set and one that will really benefit from anti-aliasing is the "Bamboo Swag" set. At the moment the text graphics look really choppy, once you apply anti-aliasing that will be a really nice set.

    ~~TUTORIAL ABOVE~~

    219263

Great tutuorial. Maybe you should cut and paste it up to the tutorial section!!!! Or is that not allowed; double points? I have fixed the Bamboo Swag. Take a look. Really an improvement. I will be going back through all of my sets (100+) in total and improving them. It will take me longer to rebuild my dot com, but oh well, it will make it better in the long run. When I get my setup here (waiting my 72 hours) I will start uploading my stuff as I review them for improvement. THANKS AGAIN!

  9. I havent used PaintShop Pro in years, but i'm sure it's capable of providing progressive JPEGs upon save/export. Progressive JPEGs, when downloading, does not display the image until fully downloaded (in some browsers this may act as if it's an interlaced GIF image). An interlaced GIF image, while downloading, will start off blurred and the more the image gets downloaded the more apparent the image gets. Sometimes, progressive or interlaced images may lower the filesize of images, sometimes even bringing download time down by 1 second. But, in pretty rare cases, doing such a thing may increase the filesize.

Well, THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! I have found the jpg optimizer right where you said it would be. Duh, have never used it before. Guess this old gal is not too smart on her own, but you guys on here are helping me right along. :)

  10. W3C, they set standards for everyone to follow when building a website to make one's website more accessible to more people, mainly ones with disabilities. They have a validator whichs scans your HTML or CSS for errors, or elements or attributes that dont really exist, or if you missed something, etc.

Gee thanks for the link. I will be studying this later as it is past 12AM here in Mich. Need my sleep for now. I do use CSE HTM Validator Lite, but maybe W3C's is better. Guess I have a whole lot more to learn.

  11. Edit button was removed for specific reasons. If you need something edited report your post, and provide details to what you want editted, and a mod, when they have time, will edit your post.

    K

As for reducing filesize, you can try compressing the file, 60-80% with progressive, can provide small filesize while maintaining good quality.

Duh. :) Ok. I'll bite, what do u mean? What program would I use to do this? You guys are certainly bringing this old grey-haired lady a lot of new stuff to learn. :P

  12. I like it. It's very elegant. Pleasing to the eyes. Thought, I would suggest trying to make the file small. It may just be me but it's quite slow to load. If you would please, next time you post an image, give a brief explanation. This topic would be considered spam. Thank you.

Thanks for the compliment. I had already made the file smaller by reducing the PPI to 72. Is there another way? :) That is besides reducing the measurement. It is made for a 1024x768 screen resolution.

Sorry about the implications of spam. Being new to the site I have a lot to learn. :P Is there any way to edit posts? I could correct it then.

  13. Looking at your web site I have noticed you don't seem to use 'anti-aliasing' on your text so it looks a little pixelated. Is there a reason why you do this?

Probably because I didn't realize I had turned it off. :P I have corrected that now. Thanks! I am very much self taught and miss some of the finer points in my ignorance.

I think in time you too will see the light and come to embrace Photoshop as your graphics program of choice. :)

I have never tried Photoshop. My daughter provided me with PSP and I have used it along with some simpler programs I already had. Since I struggle with it, I am not in much of a hurry to try another program. I haven't really mastered PSP :P yet.

    Since you're a web designer, i'm guessing you're familiar with the W3C?

I don't consider myself a web designer of any expertise. I am strictly an amateur, self taught and struggling to learn PSP. This is the main reason I offer my work for free. I haven't a clue what W3C is. :) Perhaps you can bring me up to date on this.

  14. Hi everyone

Let me intoduce myself. I am a young-at-heart senior citizen and woman of strength and inner beauty. I design web sets, background tiles, background graphics and more for people to use on their homepages. It is my hobby and they are offered for free. My domain, websetsbydonna.com, is temporarily out of service because my original host server has gone down. I want to earn points fast so I can apply here for hosting. I have borrowed some space from my ISP to put up a sampling since space will not allow more. At this time not all of the links are in order. You can only go to the "Newest Sets" page where the links to the individual page sets do work, but the zips are not present (couldn't use any more space). You have to use your back button for now, but when the whole site is up and operating, the links will all work. You can also go to the "Awards" page where I brag a little about my work.

  15. well i ask this one question have you started designing in xhtml and stat using external stylesheets yet?

    1064334842

I have not tried xhtml or stat. I am experimenting with stylesheets, but haven't got a good grasp of it yet. I use Web Design in a Nut Shell by Jennifer Niederst as my reference at this stage. Any suggestions to help me learn? :D
