Wired LAN Vs. Wireless LAN What is the best?
roggle replied to christophertinker's topic in Computer Networks
Problem with wireless is its unreliability tho....not that important with things like file transfers or surfing but when it comes to playing games, the lag spikes are a real downer so then you will want a wired solution. For example, even a wet dog can affect your signal strength and even the latest technologies have to take a little time to detect the disturbance and adjust to filter it out.Let's just hope that one day...WiMax will be a reality among all cities...So no more wires! -
Messenger vs. Google Talk What do you use?
roggle replied to fcfosters's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Well I certainly like its minimalistic touch as compared to the bloated msn messenger but I do hope they would add webcam support. That is the main thing that is missing as besides that googletalk is gorgeous and is how IMs should be, simple, lightweight, clutter free and no dumb ads flying here and there. The main problem is getting ppl to switch though as mentioned the integration with gmail is a super idea.I still use msn messenger but i use gaim anyway that combines all of it. But if I had to choose one just for its useability, I'll pick googletalk though MSN does have the majority of my contacts... -
For those die hard AMD fans out there, it looks like Intel is set to take the lead with its Core 2 Duo due to be out sometime in July. Thus far it has thrashed an overclocked AMD FX 60 and has much lower power consumption. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_2 So if you are thinking of buying a new pc, might want to hold off for this one...read many reviews about it and it is promising. And if you have an AMD already don't bother shelling out for an AM2 setup which gives DDR2 support...apparently it doesn't help performance eat all. Just stick with the socket 939s.

Actually the 7600 GS is a decent entry level card I think it's one of the better entry level cards out there and there is even an option to turn it totally silent via passive cooling. However, I do suggest you shell out a bit more for the 7600 GT http://itshootout.com/index.php?d=314&cat_id=64 Good performance, slightly higher price but also totally silent. If you're not a big overclocker then this would be a super card for you and I believe it even outperforms the 6800s so it is quite a decent card.

For those of you who liked the total war series, medieval total war ii is due to come out sometime this year and it is looking very very good. Check it out http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Sparkly graphics, thousands of men, and siege warfare loving... Also there is a new expansion out for the Rome Total War which is Alexander. Haven't tried it out yet, anyone has? Not sure if i want to buy it since I didn't find barbarian invasion all that good and instead use the free Darth Mod to make things interesting.

Maybe they have some sort of panic button they can press...one for each kind of emergency? I really don't know... I think text messaging for emergency services of course it has its cons in relating location but i somehow think that we're underestimating the police by requiring the phone to have GPS signals. I believe they can narrow it down to quite a small area without the GPS system. Just did a google search on it and take a read of this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4738219.stm. It's definitely out there and as you know how thing goes, probably more advanced than they usually disclose.

So it only works on Windows Vista? Darnit though guess that's rather expected.Has anyone used OpenOffice here and how does it compare to Microsoft Office? I am going to work in a legal firm but if everyone else has to use OpenOffice that kinda defeats the purpose. Are there any radically new features besides eyecandy? And yes it does kinda look like a Mac...Will its documents be backward compatible?Intel chips going into Macs and programs like iTunes on PCs...now all is left are to include the Linux people!

I think an important in between you should consider is a shuttle form pc. It has generally the power of the desktop, just a bit limited in upgradability but otherwise it's small, possibly portable if you need to move it now and then and if you couple it with a lcd screen, you could really save some major space.Otherwise as all the others said, power go for desktop, mobility go for notebook. If you want power and mobility there are very powerful notebooks out there but they tend to be rather large, hot (though this is improving) and incredibly expensive.Currently i'm using a power notebook (which is 4 years old) and I generally just use it like a desktop and also placed in a cooler pad as I run it really long. It's rather heavy, but I can bring it around, and it still runs a lot of games (World of Warcraft, Rome Total War) so I am pretty pleased. If you can deal with the initial damage cost of such a notebook and want to bring it around, you might want to consider one of these options.Don't go SLI in a notebook tho.

I was thinking of changing the long phone line (around 10 m) from the jack to my modem with a router and then a direct network cable connection to the computer.Do you think I would see any performance benefits? I don't usually have problems but now and then the line gets full of static for no apparent reason then clears up. The phoneline actually runs behind my tv and amplifiers so I'm not sure if there's any interference going on.Had the phone company check the cables several times and they said nothing is wrong...Also if I put in a wireless router, is the coverage in a sphere or a flat plane...As in, would it cover my upstairs rooms? The stairwell has a large cavity sort of hallway so I'm thinking the signal should be able to travel up as long as I keep my doors open and thus there isn't too much 'floor resistance'.

Google Is Releasing 4 New Products
roggle replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I read an Economist article that in response to the Quaero (http://www.pandia.com/) project, Google is also going to implement an image searching tool. When I say image search, I do not mean that you enter a key word and it searches for images by its image name. It actually will try to analyze the image or video and try to find out its meaning.Quite scary stuff but yet pretty interesting at the same time. Would be interesting to see how good is Google's answer to this.As with the google tools they're not bad, they're minimalistic, free and easy to use though I have to say I don't really use google desktop since I organize my files well enough and don't really want something trawling through my files all the time. -
Graphics Card: The Difference Is there really a difference?
roggle replied to 108SOC's topic in Hardware Workshop
Well it all depends on the games you play but most of the big titles out there will run horribly on a 9250.Also note that some of the manufacturers tend to overclock their graphics card a bit and install nicer fan systems (good brands like Leadtek, BFG etc etc) so you get more performance as compared to the normal reference systems. They cost slightly more but they can be quieter and deliver better performance. When looking for a new graphics card just do a google search around and see which manufacturers give you the most bang for buck. Generally you get what you pay for. -
Also in the future if you leave your notebook plugged into an AC outlet for long periods of time, you might want to just take out the battery.Overcharging + heat destroys a battery pretty fast so only plug it in when you need to use it.I have a spoilt battery that lasts around 20 minutes which I just leave in my computer to deal with power fluctuations and I have a good battery that I leave out of the computer unless I want to travel with it.

Data Transfer Between Laptop And Desktop
roggle replied to sandeep1405241520's topic in Hardware Workshop
Just to clarify, a normal network cable WILL NOT help you if you don't have a router. If it's just a direct connection from your notebook and pc, you need a CROSSOVER cable. It looks generally the same from the outside. Ask the shop people or look at the label.Otherwise consider getting a thumb drive if the data isn't that big. It plugs into your USB port and is very portable and also pretty cheap. -
The best would always be a network cable though (some people think that phone lines give the same speed as network cables). And yes wireless solutions will always be slower than cabled solutions with current technology.Go for wireless if you want ease of use and no messiness. But remember to secure your wireless connection as there are tons of people who don't and end up letting their neighbours use their broadband for free.

Graphics Card: The Difference Is there really a difference?
roggle replied to 108SOC's topic in Hardware Workshop
I think it's also to do with Nvidia not having to spend a lot on facilities to actually produce their card and distribute them. Just sell the blueprints to them, get a sizeable profit without having to risk sales being bad in a certain area. Kinda like a franchise if you now what I mean. Opening/closing factories/distributing is a huge amount of work by itself so it's not surprising that they choose to outsource it. By the way, what are you using the graphics card for? Just a warning but the 9250 is really the bottom of the lot and can't really play modern games properly. -
That product is Windows lol. I have to say that I still like the Office suite though. But yes that's really low...it's like admitting that they're crappy and have to resort to dirty tricks...I wonder what's going through the mind of Bill gates.

I am still rather annoyed that IE is still sticking with some of its IE only code...What bullcrap...At least Firefox sticks with the international standards. It's not as if the IE code adds anything significant and probably could be achieved with other bits of code.

Yeah I am also having formatting problems on the strategy page (which is not linked from the main page) http://www.findingresult.com/?dn=nrgservers.net&pid=9POR3TG0A (click on Firemaw) or go direct to http://www.findingresult.com/?dn=nrgservers.net&pid=9POR3TG0A After the picture, a lot of ppl complain that the first letters of the lines are missing. I'm not sure what is up with that...I checked the code but didn't see anything wrong...If someone could point it out or are the pictures just too large to fit in the table properly? Also the DKP site is now up which I need to skin.

Is It Worth It To Get Gmail ? Is Gmail Good?
roggle replied to wazzupster0204's topic in Search Engines
Some ppl complain that gmail can't 'create folders'. You can tag it a certain way and it works like a folder so there's nothing wrong there. Anyway the search function is great in any case so you shouldn't have a problem locating your e-mails.I like how the space keeps growing as well.I just got myself a Hotmail Live beta which gives me the same space...but the interface is too cluttered and only works properly on IE which is rubbish...I'm still sticking to my gmail. -
ATI Radeon 9250 Issues Ive been working on it for weeks now...
roggle replied to evion's topic in Hardware Workshop
There must be a setting somewhere under advanced to let you disable your onboard graphics. Also should get rid of the nvidia drivers again if you can.You also said something about a vpu recover resetting your graphics accelerator...Since you've tried upgrading your motherboard/graphics/bios drivers, if the bios fix doesn't work, then you might have on your hands a faulty card especially when you say it only starts resetting when it is put under heavy load. -
They would probably say that whatever we do without HDCP is 'illegal' lol... But actually this isn't Microsoft's fault, it's something that has been in the works by those people producing the media though I guess they are partly to blame for agreeing to implement it. But bah at human rights...especially the 'act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood' seems more like some drivel rather than having any legal force. I don't think the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has any legal effect anyway. It's just some symbolic thing...which is basically keeping those Human Rights lawyers employed.

I don't see why are they forcing the gpu to work instead of the processor just to get an OS to run...In my experience it was the gpu usually that let me down first performance wise rather than the processor...though I suppose in desktop applications it'll be utilizing that spare processing power that is usually unused. Still...I am not sure I want all this eye candy at the cost of system performance. XP was a nice upgrade mainly cause of its relative stability as compared to 98, not so much because of its graphical improvements...Forcing graphical improvements is kinda dumb. I guess I just don't like the fact that I have to buy a Direct X 9 capable card with at least 128 mb ram if i want to run it at a decent resolution. Not that I can't afford it...just that it seems that it's making things unnecessarily difficult for a small improvement in eye candy. Bill Gates talks about helping third world countries...how can you help them when you force them to change OS and hardware every now and then when it is not absolutely needed? Not to mention...the crappy thing that those of us who have shelled out on a good monitor probably have to get a new monitor to see licensed high definition tv.....You now need a HDCP compliant monitor..which is not even remotely available nowadays...So wait before you shell out on a new monitor. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Total rubbish....Makes you hate licensed material more rather than promote people to abandon piracy in my opinion. I really hope the pirates win this one.
