It indeed is rather laggy ... I think Vista realy relies on the indexer service and guess what I've disabled . The most annoying thing is that explorer changes the default view of folders all the time, pain in the but you know. My suggestion is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it (or, if you have a good working setup, don't upgrade, at least not until service pack 1)

Using a LiveCD on an old computer isn't a good idea, the cd-rom drive in that computer is probably a slow one and it would take ages to load a live cd. On the other hand, if you'd get DLS (Damn Small Linux), then it isn't such a great problem because it's only 50Mb in size (@Laurence, DSL comes with AbiWord, I don't know if that's good enough for your word processing).Another suggestion is getting Windows98 SE, it runs fine on a P1, needs only a little amount of memory and can do the most basic things.

switching motherboard doesn't realy require you to format windows. If windows doesn't start after a motherboard change, you simply go into safe mode, install drivers and reboot. If that doesn't work, get back into safe mode, remove motherboard specific hardware (installed drivers I mean, don't go ripping out your onboard sound card ) and reboot. After this reboot, windows will find new hardware and install the correct drivers. If I were you, I'd try sueing them, loosing data is priceless and it's unacceptable they've destroyed all of your data without even asking a thing. Or at least scare them a bit so they'll never format a hdd in the future without asking .

it's nice, but I don't want to register to download this little tool . Do you happen to know another site where I could download this tool (or maybe you can give the direct link for downloading the program since you've already registered )

I wouldn't only limit it to open source, but I'd also include freeware (because there are a lot of closed source freeware programs that realy rock). For about 2-3 years I've been using nothing but freeware (except for windows) and it works as well as non-freeware programs. I am aware of the limit of freeware, eg. The GIMP can't give the same features and support that Photoshop CS3 gives, but I don't expect it for a €0 program . So, for companies and professionals, Open Source isn't always the best option (another example: OpenOffice.org is a great office packet, but everybody else uses Office Word and no matter how hard they try, the import and export of office documents will never be perfect).

no idea under wich user the command prompt is launched when doing this helpfile-trick, but changing the access rigths of cmd.exe (by denying read/write access) is the simples method, but probably not the best. The 'at' command can be blocked too. You'll probably have to start digging in the group editor to find these options.

I usualy use Mercury Messenger, but not at school for two reasons:1) it doesn't work on our schools secured networks (tough pidgin and msn do work):2) I don't like sending messages over the unsecured networks at schoolThat why I use Pidgin in combination with the Tor network at school . Luckily for me, Danny (the guy who develops Mercury Messenger) is working on proxy support

Hiding Your Personal Files From Pros More serious approach to privacy
wutske replied to xerxes1405241546's topic in Software
I have the data on my laptop encrypted using TrueCrypt and a few keys on a USB stick. It's not realy 100% secure because the 'drives' are only unmounted when I reboot and if you have the USB stick and you know you need it you can easily access the my data. Still, it's better than nothing -
Don't know if this works, but that links works in IE and you can also make a shortcut to that link.and for those who need admin rights in cmd prompt (you'll need the sheduler service enabled and the rights to do the at command):at xx:xx /interactive cmd.exewhere xx:xx is the current time in 24h notation + 1 minute. After 1 minute, a command prompt with 'svchost.exe' in the title bar should apear. Be very carfeull with this because you are now working as 'SYSTEM' wich means you can access, change and delete everything.

How To Bypass Bios Passwords. Read This Amazing Guide
wutske replied to Rs-Server's topic in Websites and Web Designing
having no power for about 5 seconds is more than enough to clear a CMOS. So unplugging to main power cord, leaving the PSU discharge (takes about 5-10 seconds), changing the clear CMOS jumper for about 5 seconds (or removing the battery for 5 seconds) and then putting it back is the best way. -
Try to explain what you like and what you don't like, this helps others who are still in doubt .Personally, I'd describe Vista as 'okay', a bit slow, a bit overdone but when configured correctly it does what is should do, working

like tpms said, make sure the hdd is set as the first device to boot from. A possibility is that your computer boots faster than your hdd can start. Some BIOSes have an option to wait a few seconds before it starts detection the hard drives. Maybe your hdd is wearing out and causes it to spin up slower. The spinup time is usualy recorded using S.M.A.R.T., check these values (there are a lot of free utils that can access the SMART data) and see if everything is still okay.

I'm talking about my Xisto account.I'd like to be able to upload new albums using an upload script or through FTP (FTP is faster because I can't use ZIP function on Xisto). I'm going to change my scripts so they won't try to chmod anymore but just echo that the user should chmod the folder ...

I'm trying to make a photoalbum in PHP and I'd like to be able to let people upload a ZIP file that contains all the images. But it appears that Xisto doesn't have ZIP support installed (or maybe disbled) ? .Is there any way to get the PHP ZIP functions to work on Xisto ? Where do I have to start begging for it Ps. I hope this wasn't asked before, but looking for 'PHP' and 'ZIP' isn't possible because it's less than 4 chars

We have to make something in PHP for school, so I decided to make a complete photoalbum. One of the things that it can is creating and storing thumbnails, but here is where the problems start. The thumbnails have to be stored in a subfolder called 'thumbnails', if this folder doesn't exist, my script creates this folder and everything works like it is supposed to be. But it doesn't do that the way I want. The folder is made with: mkdir($thumbnail_folder, 0777); but when I check it via FTP, it is set to 755. Even worse is that I can't access or remove this folder because the user and group are set to 99 instead of wutske. If I chmod it afterwards to 0777 with this script. The chmod works fine, but the chown doesn't. <?phpif (chmod(thumbnails, 0777)) echo 'good';else echo 'bad'; if (chown(thumbnails, 'wutske')) echo 'super';else echo 'terrible';?> and this is the error I get Conclusion, as wutske, I have problems to get to 99 . But, I have the same problem in the opposite direction, I can't chmod of chown a folder that I made via FTP (user + group = wutske). My question is, how can I make PHP chmod folders that I made and how can I let PHP make folders that I can access ? I know it's possible because Gallery can (I just checked it, username=wutske and group=99). Ps. group=99 , wich group is this ?

and I always tought the website from my previous school was the worst ever But it sucks anyway, horrible colorscheme (dark red + bright blue), navigation is a nightmare (50% of the links opens a new tab) and because the photo albums are made with Strontpage, they only work in Internet Explorer (and they even know, they've put a notice on the website, yellow on brown, that it only works in IE) and last but not least, it even had popups enjoy it: http://www.smcb.be/nl/Default/6281/Home.aspx

We leave our router on 24/7. I don't know if this is the cause, but in the past 3 years, we've had 5 dead routers (n°5 died 3 days ago). The ones that suffered most were 2 Philips router with built-in WiFi. They got pretty hot in the summer one died in the summer, the other one died somewhere in the fall. The other 3 ran in normal conditions. But that doesn't stop us from keeping them online 24/7, it's just annoying and a waste of time (finding out it's disabled, getting to the 1st floor, enabling it and waiting 2 minutes before it established a connection)
-
They can go pretty big, atm the biggest one is 16Gb or 8Gb . The advantages are obvious, it's small, it has no moving parts, it uses less energy, it has a very low access time and is relatively fast. It might be a bit expensive to buy at first, but one SD card could store many games (eg. buy a game on CD or download it and install it on a SD-card. At 100Mb/game, you could store like 80 games on an 8Gb card ).

I like old versions because some older demos have more features enabled. A nice example is Diskeeper Lite 7, it has an annoying popup (just disable the service and no more pop-up ) and it has no time limit. Simply put, a free version of diskeeper wich does nothing more but what I want, defragging when I ask it to do so

I see aero as only the black looks with all the other fancy crap around it like the Win+tab thingy. The drop down in explorer are absolute not a part of the Aero theme because they still work if Aero is disabled. About the SP2-like questions. They are useless because they don't protect you. After a while, nobody reads the messages anymore and they simply click 'yes'. They are annoying and slow things down. About the services, especialy the diagnostic service, they are useless. Okay, indexing can be nice, but I know where to find my stuff, I almost don't perform a search and the indexing process slows down your pc, whether you want it or not. The diagnostic service is even more usells. I once disabled it, hoping to get a reason why I couldn't connect to a wireless network and it only said what windows had already said before 'you can't establish a connection with this network, try again or connect to another network' ... quite a waste of memory only the repeat itself WMP11 is slow here, if I open a song, it takes up to 10 seconds before it starts playing, while playing, the music somethings slows down or hangs, even tough my 2 cores aren't loaded by another program. The programs, too bad you haven't heard about them, they are great and free. Netstumbler is a great program for findind wireless networks in the neighbourhood, CdBurnerXP is for burning CDs and DVDs. And no, they don't work in compatibilty mode because both have to access the hardware directly. But yes, I agree, not everything works when you switch from version x to y. @vhortex: I agree with you, I wished there weren't so many version, Home for those who don't know much about windows, Pro for those who know a lot more, and Server with all the advanced features like TPM. I have Home Premium installed, but I miss the Group Edit like in XP Pro . I'd have to switch to Business or Ultimate for that, but Ultimate is to expensive and Business doesn't have moviemaker or games installed ...

Hmmm, no . I'll explain why.1) Even tough it's better than a few years ago, the hardware support is still terrible. I've run Linux on several machines, and even tough the pc's where fast enough, linux felt slow. Graphic drivers are even worse. nVidia is on the right way, but AMD has a long way ahead.2) Software, it's still hard to find linux alternatives for every program I use. Yes, I could use wine, but wine doesn't not always work, wine can't perform miracles, wake up ! The next problem is that I need some windows-only programs for school (mostly simulation) and I don't want to switch between linux and windows everytime I need to work for school.3) Too hard, the learning curve of linux is too steep. I must say I like the command line, but it's just to hard for everyday usage. This is the major problem with linux, most programs still require you to use the command line and that has to change before linux can become popular. If one would make GUIs for every command line tool I'd be more eager to switch.4) Dual boot, it's nice, it's handy, but it's a b*tch too. Dual boot means 2 environments where you can change your data. That means I'll have be able to synchronise my data. Since linux can't safely write NTFS (especialy Vista-NTFS) and Windows can't safely write EXT3, that means I'll have to make a FAT32 partition, this means a terrible loss of space. On a single partition, empty space can be used by anything, on a seperated partition, the unused space can only be used for data ...5) Too much time. Getting linux up and running the way you want it takes a lot of time, especialy because of 3).This is of course a view from someone who used Windows for a very long time and linux for a much smaller amount of time, I guess the more linux view would be completely the opposite of what I've just said . Still, most linux users are too arrogant, they seem to live in their own world and don't want to admit their linux world isn't perfect and they do that by shitting on microsoft. I prefer to stay in the middle, linux has it's advantages (powerfull, advanced, cheap to get and safe) but so does windows (easy, safe (if configured well) and wide spread (=great software + best driver support)).So this is my view on linux vs. windows. Maybe on day I'll switch, but definately not today.

also, tell use what driver you've installed. Did you use the ndiswrapper to use windows drivers or did you find linux specific drivers ?

CD ... too old , having data stored on SHDC SD cards is much faster, cheaper and more compact . So, we have found a hole in the markt, now we need somebody who can develop this thing
