Ok i tried doing what ruben said. it seems to be working relatively fine. it doesn't seem to go 100% ok, at least in my case, as it starts filtering messages from other people back to me. you know how gmail will make a back-and-forth conversation as one email, right? so if someone replies back to me, it occasionally gets filtered out because my name was in the headers as well. Neways it's definitely something for Gmail to work on. A simple option in the POP3 settings. and since my emails tarted working again, it's not such an issue for me anymore because i can send and recieve properly through outlook express. thanks tho.

Windows Administrator only doesn't have a password if you don't specify one when installing. it asks you for a password, but you have the option not to provide one. I can see this happening to people who buy pre-installed windows on the computers, but since i prefer to install it myself, i never leave the admin password blank. Then i also disable the guest account, and if i'm feeling very lucky (stupid), i'll also disable safe mode. It's a great thing to do, but then with windows being as unstable as it is, you're walking a thin line. Then on top of that, you use classic rather than the fancy login, disable fast user switching, and activate syskey, and you've done the basic steps. Of course that wouldn't keep out anyone with a bit of technical knowledge, but it would weed out those who want to do things like pressing F11 to get in. Now.. i'm sure most people here already know these things, but for those who don't, there are extremely simple ways to get in even if there's admin accounts passworded and whatnot. this is an article from techtrax (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) And there are other ways too. here are a few links: https://www.petri.com/forgot_administrator_password home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ How much simpler can it get? That first link, you make yourself a cd or floppy, and in less than 5 minutes you're in. the article i posted above is a time consuming method, but i posted it jsut to show a glaring hole in the windows security. These steps don't help if you're trying to cover your tracks, but i don't think that's what this discussion started off as.

Yes. So far this is the only problem i've come up against. Otherwise, set up correctly everything else works great. Though nowdays there are lots of other options for hosts that have both IMAP and POP access for free, mailboxes of at least 1 Gb, etc.

The Mentos And Diet Coke Reaction

Did you know the guys who made the mentos video netted at least $30,000? That's from one website. here's an article on it from Silicon Valley.com -
Using Same Serial # On Multiple Copies Of Windows
Grafitti replied to Jackel's topic in Websites and Web Designing
While we're not promoting the use of pirated material here, windows will install on several machines, which can all use the same serial #, and as long as WGA is removed, you can browse the M$ site and downloads with no problem. this does not matter whether you used a legal or pirated copy. either one works. -
Free Gmail Account! Click here for one.
Grafitti replied to CyberReaper1405241516's topic in Search Engines
There really is no difference between the google and gmail addresses, except that having myaccount@gmail.com is a whole lot cooler than myaccount@googlemail.com. but when it comes down to it, they're interchangeable. Like say when you log in to your gmail it tells you your account is myaccount@googlemail.com, people can send mail to either myaccount@googlemail.com or myaccount@gmail.com and it will arrive in your inbox safe and sound. I'm not exactly sure why they changed over. As when i signed up for my first few accounts i got gmail ones, then after a while i got a couple more and they were googlemail, and then now if i sign up i get a gmail one again. I did hear a rumor that it had something to do with that court case where i think it was that german company that sued them for using the name Gmail, and so around that time they dropped the gmail and started using googlemail just to be safe, and i think there was even an announcement that they would keep the gmail extension for those who had already signed up and created accounts, but then when it blew over they changed it back to their default gmail extension. well... either that's a lot of good information or a very detailed rumor. but it's the first reply to that question so far.. -
Or if you want to just look at awsome creations and try to figure out by yourself how to do it (you'd need at least a medium proficieny in photoshop for that), try http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ frequent contests are great sources for new ideas of how to do things, and you learn more than simply following tutorials in a book.

But their spam filters are pretty powerful, and also smart. At least compared to yahoo and hotmail. i have no end of junk mail there, and route it through gmail to filer the trash. -
Boyscouts Watching Your Downloads
Grafitti replied to lonebyrd's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yeah let's let the boy scouts search for illegal porn. at least it's funner than simply mp3s. and like all those boy scouts aren't doing it themselves? they'll probably end up spying on each other. Maybe the government can pay the boys to each choose a porn site and be the moderator, dily checking what the latest uploads/downloads were, and previewing them for content. ;D -
It's like this: Computer with cable connection: ICS enabled. IP address 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 Cable Modem: IP address 203.81.211.45 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 203.81.211.1 My computer (for example) IP address 192.168.0.5 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 I have no idea why i need to set the default gateway for outlook express and chatting and not for internet explorer, but that's how it is. Now, if i take off the gateway on the ICS computer, the internet works, for both that computer and all the other ones on the network. But the above mentioned programs don't. Now if i put in the gateway, then outlook express etc, work (at least in theory, like they were workign that way up till 2 days ago). I'm very open to other ideas, or pointers as to what i'm doing wrong. I don't have 2 NICs on the ICS computer. just the one NIC to the hub, and the modem is connected through USB.

if it's a dynamic disk then you should be able to easily resize.

No i'm using a cable modem. and i can't change it. i can't access the settings. it's passworded by the company. and they won't give it to me. So if i wanted to enable this port forwarding i would need to access the settings in the modem?Or how about if i connected the modem through LAN to a router, and then with all the other computers plugged into the router, could they then all connect straight to the internet, at least in theory?

I'd like to know how to disable gmail sending a copy of everything i send from a browser to my outlook express. The reason i use the browser soemtimes is because the internet is too slow for the outlook express pop client. So it's pretty useless for me if the next time i open outlook a copy of everything i sent comes in. how can i disable it? i'm sure it's a simple thing, and one that eludes me.

Of all things, and a tribute once again to the absolutely insanely primitive state of technology in pakistan, my stupid cable modem works fine if it's all by itself, or with very simple ICS enabled. However: if all i want to do is browse the internet, i can do it from any computer on the network. But if i want to chat, or use outlook express, i've got to set a gateway on the ICS computer. And the minute i do that, it shuts off the internet. As soon as i remove the gateway, the internet browses fine again. It hadn't done this before, up till a couple days ago everything was working fine. My network is 192.168.xxx.xxx, and the ICS is obviously 192.168.0.1So correct me if i'm wrong, but the gateway i put is the same IP. But that's beside the point, i feel, as i tried any old number in the gateway and it shuts off the internet. Complaints to Worldcall (my cable provider) fell on deaf ears. They have no notion of customer service. Their solution consists of "disable your network".So why could this be happening, and how else can i get outlook express to send and recieve over the network without a gateway?

I think it's a waste. especially when for that price i can get a 300GB external firewire/USB. Maybe if you're an HP fan, or it's really necessary for you, but otherwise there's much better deals. Currently i'm looking into getting a dual external case with two 300GB SATA disks inside. that's going to end up costing me a little over $250.

If i total up work and leisure surfing, i would average around 50 hours a week, of which 20 would be leisure. my work entails researching a lot online, plus keeping up websites etc. But if i included how much my computer was online, that would be @ 160 hours a week, or basically 24/7. i'm constantly downloading.

any way you can re-post the files? the link expired and i wanted to try it too.

One Comp. Two Monitors? Anyone know how?
Grafitti replied to CyberReaper1405241516's topic in Hardware Workshop
You can also buy a small box that has one input and two outputs.. of course depending on what you spend you get either simply 2 displays the same, whereas others can split the image over 2 monitors if your card supports it. it should, if it's anything decent. -
Actually you can make Windows delete, skipping the recycle bin. i don't have the exact commands to make it default to that right now, oh wait. duh! right click on recycle bin, and you get the option to delete files straight. Total commander also comes with the recycle bin as an option. You can choose whether or not you want it to stick the in the bin. Not that i'm such a great fan of windows. Although, I must point out that unlike earlier (pre-2000) versions of windows, XP doesn't let you delete system files. if you really want to, of course you can, but for an average user, they can't totally mess it up unintentionally.

Whats The Name... sun microsystems credit card size computer
Grafitti replied to mustra's topic in Hardware Workshop
I suppose it's possible that that's what they're aiming to make, but i wonder if they are at that stage yet. I did know someone who used to work at "the beast" --- that supercomputer in Holland. Obviously military, of course. But yeah, just backing up what Houdini said about the military being way ahead of the commercial sector, those guys had P4's and XP professional back in 98. so since that's what they had then, figure what they're using now. -
Mods, please remove this topic. I got another copy, so problem solved.

VLC is now a standby on any computer i put software on. it's so simple to just have to use the one player for almsot anything, and not have to worry that you'll be stuck without the codec you need. case in point: i was giving a presentation at a seminar, and my laptop adapter was burned out from a power surge, so i had 4 other laptops to use. 3 of them didn't have the codec i needed to use (latest Xvid) one had divx, and the others only had media player. luckily the 4th one had vlc, and i was able to show the clip, but it was a near disaster. But other than codecs, media player is nice, and whether you use the big skin, which looks cool, or a smaller one, which doesn't take much memory, it's easy and simple to use, as well as looking cool. --which is missing from every other WMP. Winamp is STILL more powerful for audio files, and i don't think it's too complicated, unless you're using a modern abstract skin. just use the basic. Here's what i think about iTunes: it sucks. fine if you've got an ipod and have to have it to transfer stuff, but it's got its system processes it starts and slows down the computer.

Really stupidly, after finally downloading my copy of office 12 beta 2, with office professional, groove, onenote, project, sharepoint designer, and visio, i extracted the files from each exe installer package into directories, and someone (probably me) deleted my original downloads. The problem is, that i can't install it now, because it wants the folder trees it would make when extracting normally. For example, groove: my extraction has it all in one folder, all files. Whereas the server version (which i'm not interested in installing, didn't come as a single exe file, and therefore has folder such as gdb, gms, grs, web, in which the files are all tucked away nicely in their proper spaces. so: it would be too tedious for someone to write down the full hierarchy of every file here, but does anyone know where i can find the list, even on microsoft's site. really to re-download it is not an option for me, as it took me over a month to do so.
