  1. Yep, this file gets created if you view your images in Thumbnail View in Windows XP.This thumbs.db file can grow quite large, especially if you have folders with a ton of images in them. I usually advise users to do a search for thumbs.db and delete all instances of it if previewing images in Thumbnail View is not a crucial thing to them. It will save some space.
  2. I want a batch/dos file that will ping certain IP addresses at intervals of say 1 hour. If the IP address is not pingable after each hourly checkup, I want it to give some kind of warning. Maybe startup a notepad file and indicate the IP address that lost the network connection.I will want to improve on this later on, but for now, a simple dos batch file or something similar will do.I'm using Windows XP at the office network.Thanks.
  3. So you tried downloading the Catalyst Software Suite already: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Try taking out the video card again and putting it back in. Maybe reseating it will help. Windows should have detected it in the Device Manager. You can also try to scan for hardware changes by going to your Device Manager and click on your computer name at the very top. Then go to Action->Scan for hardware changes to see if the video card shows up now. Otherwise, try installing SP2 as mentioned earlier to see if it helps.
  4. LightSpeed Consumer Panel is definitely not some scam site. I have been a member there for years already now. The problem I have with this survey site is that they don't give out enough points for the time you spend on their surveys. Worse yet, you don't get a guarantee on the points earned unless you qualify for the surveys. So if you enter a survey and fill out the demographics about yourself, that will decide if you qualify or not. Sometimes they are somewhat sly about this, and ask you a bit more...wasting more of your time and getting no points in return. They do enter you in the $5,000 sweepstakes though...haven't won yet Almost reached enough points to cash out again though...
  5. I know it's common sense almost to ask why not just carry a portable hard drive instead?1. They are most likely bigger. Even the smaller laptop hard drives (or maybe even smaller than that 1.8" I think) can't compare to the smaller size of the flash drive.2. They have movable parts inside. This will probably have a higher chance of mechanical problems versus the flash drives where it's all non-mechanical parts inside.3. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but maybe even speed. From what I read in the past, writing and reading from flash memory is really quick. I think the article I read was talking about the processor cache memory or even the RAM inside the computer. Compared to the hard drive, I'm not sure, but it should be quick enough. Otherwise, this is probably the only downside or having the flash drive over the portable hard drive.4. It doesn't make you look cool LOL. Who can walk around these days and say I have a 64GB Flash Drive It may make you sound like a uber geek, but hey you have the storage :PI'm sure these things have some kind of warranty or insurance in case they fail. There has to be a new method invented to replace the USB contacts on these flash drives. I have seen some where the gold contacts wear off over time after a lot of usage. The only way around this for now is probably using one of those USB extension cords and just use the other end to plug and unplug to the computer. Much easier to replace a usb cable than the flash drive itself
  6. To answer the original question, I see no point in sharing your internet on a dial up speed. It's slow enough as it is already and if you share it with one or more other computers, it will take much longer to load the web pages.@BlackHaze: It doesn't work so easily like that. Best method in your case is probably connecting it to your computer and sharing it from there as yordan pointed out earlier. The only setback for doing it this way is that you will have to leave the computer on in order for the other computers to print to it.
  7. Different people have their own ways of learning a language. Just like you NeoTeemZ, I also learned the C language first Then I went to other languages like Assembly and Visual Basic before I went into Java.I find Visual Basic very easy to use, but it might be due to my prior programming experience with C. It might be better to start off with the C language first in that case. But I did have to make some adjustments when I started to study C. Was confused with the whole constructors and destructors

    Hello There

    Welcome to Xisto
  9. This might be nearly impossible depending on how strong the password was used. You can try searching on Google to see if you can find a program to recover passwords from WinRAR.I recommend contacting the sites author/webmaster and see if they can give you the password.
  10. You would be surprised....Techies who have the money and want to show off will probably open their wallet for these. Remember when the first CD burner drive came out? I'm sure it wasn't cheap back then at all. Now you can get the burners for almost nothing. Technology will always be advancing and when an even bigger flash drive comes out, the price of this one will decrease as usual Is Buslink the brand/model of the flash drive you were referring to? https://www.engadget.com/ If so, it looks like the price took a dive. $2000 off after a little over a year
  11. Welcome to the forum. That really depends on what programming language you want to start off with first and what you intend to do with this language. C++ and Java are probably the more popular ones. I just did a quick search on Google for some sites that may help: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/ http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/ I'm sure you will get the hang of other languages once you understand on of them. Code will be different but the logic behind them should be very similar, especially for Java and C++.
  12. I have played Zoo Tycoon before (forgot if it's part one or two). Didn't like it much. Spent time on the tutorials and still didn't find it entertaining.I started with Rollercoaster Tycoon and loved that game. I still go back and play it from time to time. Monopoly Tycoon is another one but I found it to easy to beat the entire game. Always go back for more anyway...because it's Monopoly
  13. Yep, the reason you got the speed "increase" is because of the longer range provided by the Linksys wireless router. If you bring the computer next to the router (or at least closer to it), you should be getting that 6Mbps speed also.Since 802.11g is still the more common standard today, I'm still using it. I have thought about getting the N or Pre-N type routers before, but it wasn't really needed. I rarely use file transfers in my local network and the range that the G provides is more than enough for now
  14. I don't remember the exact day when my site was down (some time last week), but the down time lasted only about 5-10 minutes. I was actually on the paid hosting when this happened. I was going to contact Xisto - Web Hosting if it lasted anything longer than 10 minutes. They did a great job to bring it back up if there was an issue. Otherwise, it was probably just a quick maintenance of some sort
  15. You can get Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional at: https://www.krollontrack.com/products/data-recovery-software/ The biggest problem I see here is that you installed Windows in the same partition/drive already. This will most likely be the data killer as it will write in different areas in the hard drive and I have no doubt that it touched the area where your previous data was. If that Ontrack program doesn't have much success, you can search on Google for file recovery or even partition recovery and see if you can use any of the other programs to recover your data successfully.
  16. Don't quote me on this, but I don't think this can be done with the webhosting service at Xisto. Will you only be using this mainly for data storage? From what you said, it sounds like it. Xisto will either deny your application or terminate your hosting account (if you get it and a staff/admin finds out you are only using it for storage of files). Read the Terms of Service: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/81424-topic/?findpost=1064285080
  17. @knight17: You most likely have a ISDN connection there, so that's still better than dial up. Dial-up can reach up to 56kbps but never does. So anything over that (especially over 100kbps) is ISDN or higher (cable/DSL, etc.).Ran the test and currently rated to be downloading at 209.71kb/sec. Probably could be a bit faster if I paused my downloads. Currently downloading and it's probably throwing off some of the stats
  18. You might have to contact your webhost about this. I think some webhosts will allow you to change the MX record by yourself. I asked my webhost to change it for me :PFor the problem with receiving mails in Outlook, if you still have problems after your webhost set the MX record for you, ask them how to get your emails from Outlook. You might just be missing a setting or so there
  19. I'm also interested in doing this and will be giving it a test drive. I have seen an option in my router for enabling a remote IP address. Does your router have that option anywhere? If so, try enabling it and jot down the IP address there.I had a question (in my mind ) about how it would forward it to the proper computer in your house if it had more than one computer using VNC. The router will need to know which computer to give you access to remotely. I did a search on this and from what I found, if you change the default port in VNC (could be 5500-5900) to something else, it should be able to pick up the correct computer in your house and allow you to connect to it.Definitely check with your company's IT department to see if they allow outbound VNC ports. They might be blocking out the common VNC ports and this will in turn block your RealVNC program from contacting your home computer.
  20. Should I just remove the side fan and put the funnel back in then? LOL. The CPU fan is huge itself but I want to make sure it takes in sufficient cool air. As of now, I have just two case fans really. One on the side (that blows directly on the CPU fan) and one on the back (sucking the air out). The graphic card has it's own fan and the power supply is also sucking hot air out (however little it helps out ). I will try putting one on the bottom front then to see if it helps out. As of now, it's whirling and twirling....too many fans LOL. I have a quick question on fan filters. I couldn't believe how complicated it was to install these (first time I'm doing this). I bought one of those fan filters where they have two plastic pieces that snap into the filter (see this image on what it looks like). There's one side that's bigger to "lock" the smaller piece (with four holes for the screws). The foam/filter is in the center. My question is how the heck do I mount this to my current fan? It's already collecting dust inside my new computer and I want to get this installed as soon as I can.
  21. I thought that the backup battery on UPS will last more than 4-10 minutes. I guess that's only for the more expensive types. I see exactly what you mean now. I usually save frequently and guess I don't really need the backup battery. I just overlooked the differences between a regular surge protected and the UPS battery backup. Going with the surge protector <_<I have looked at a few of the UPS and see that they all come with some kind of program to monitor the power. The ones I looked at are Ultra branded UPS'
  22. This program is used to clear out your temp files and do some registry cleanup. This program is useful for those that like to download programs and open them on the fly. It's usually saved on the temp folder and this can build up over time. Also some program installations (if they do a bad job), leave all their installation related files intact in the temp folder. You can only save as much space as you have junk. So if you have only two temp cookie files, don't expect to save 1GB of space
  23. Welcome aboard to Xisto :PIf your posts are constructive and easy to understand, I'm sure you'll do the fine here. Just don't post one liners or multiple shorts posts like "That was cool", "LOL", "Awesome", etc. We frown at those posts and hosting will most likely be denied if we see a bunch of shorts posts like that.Programming can be fun if done as a side thing. I graduated with a degree in programming but my job doesn't deal with programming. I would pull out all my hair if I had to sit behind a computer coming up with code and debugging them all day. When it works, it's good....
  24. The HOSTS file shouldn't slow anything down. If anything, it will completely block you out from a site...which is what it's suppose to do.
  25. Forgot about this issue...yeah, the problem was fixed after I replaced the motherboard.Call Dell? Good luck with that. I know there will be a long waiting period and they will ask me the same questions again even when I tell them I did a certain step already. It's definitely one of the stranger issues that I have seen since I don't see how the email and motherboard issue are related. If anything, the user should be having shut down issues no matter what she's doing.
