  1. well there appears to be alot of files in /usr/portage/distfiles. not sure how they got there!?when i tried before i entered the commands in the handbook so i guess that must have copied the files over? it is quite possible that my command was wrong. i did something like: CONSOLE emerge --usepkg x11but that tried to go on the internet. i did it just now and it did the same thing. is it possible that i need to be more specific rather than 'x11'?also what order, if it matters, should i install programs. what i want to end up with is a gnome desktop. do i need to install x then gnome and when that is done will it automatically run?many questions im sorry but this is my first linux
  2. hi linux usersi've now got a stable gentoo base but i cant seem to install any packages. this is on a differnet not internet computer to this one. i have installed quite an old version (kernel 2.4) 2004.3 but i have the 2005 packages cd. i looked at the online gentoo install handbook 2005 but it has the same instructions as the 2004.3 handbook. when is try to emerge the packages the computer tried to go online to find the packages instead of going to the cd and looking there. obviously no internet makes it fail.it is a p3 so 86x structure.that may not be enough detail to allow you to help but if someone could just run through from the boot what i should do to get the packages to install that would be brilliant. im not to good at base commands yetthanks in advance
  3. thats niceive also heard of a very similar system but using bacteria instead. im not totally sure of details becasue i cant remember. the use of a semipermiable membrane and some kind of ionizing bacteria can produce a difference in charge and create a boilogical battery with a positive and negative. these cells do require initial organic matter and they last for a few years.imagine that, tiny little bugs running your ipod
  4. its perfectly possible to use geocities for image hosting and hotlink, but if you read the terms of service they can quite reasonably delete your account. fair enough i say if they get not return for their service. i was doing that for a while but now ive got Xisto it's fine. also if using a service like geocities the bandwidth on your geocities accound will be absolutly rubbish and if you have lots of images that might be a problemseems odd though that geocities cant be bothered to stop it, on my cpanel it takes only a second to set blocking up.
  5. i pretty sure the school was ties into using ie or thats what i have heard from someone who is to be trusted. this is beacsue it is a 'microsoft acadamy' or something like that where you can do further education courses to make you the best ms access user possible!!has anyone been to a school with a unix/linux network thats what i want to know. that would be so much better for the school wouldnt it - user privilages so easy - i guess is a long shot though seems unlikely.
  6. sorry again not any of them but i think it is digital here is a horrible picture i drew. so sorry but its late. here thanks again
  7. what sort of experiences of "ICT" have people had at school. I've heard its not only my school. we have never done any coding in any lessons. looking at html in dreamweaver for one lesson was the closest it was painfully easy to view nearly all the files in the network and add new pages to the school intranet the atual exam board classed hackers as people breaking into computer systems to casue damage we constantly took notes on paper and did handwriting in lessons the gcse exam was 2 hours long and took 35 to compleate one teacher didnt know how to use and set up a scanner they didnt use firefox because they were locked into a licence with microsoft not such a problem but quite funny. the administrators of the system either spent their time emptying printing ques or playing unread tournament in their office over the super fast cabled school connection. anything from anyone else? possible some good experiences?
  8. ive got a myspace but i rarely use it. its pretty funny though and is a bit of a runnning joke because about 80% of the people on there that are regular users are emo.this might be a little more appropriate:<3 .MySpAcE.wHeRe.ThE.iNtErNeT.cOmEs.To.DiE. <3 it is true though, can be very addictive but it gets boring after a short fix
  9. ok then sorry. i take is back if thought that the shuffle feature was non-optional. i mean who would spend millions of dollars of advertising promoting a feature that every music player since the cd walkman can do!!!if you can turn it off i guess then it is perfectly ok. the design is beautiful and its small and light. no screen a bad thing but i can see myself using it. why did i ever douht apple
  10. what 3 dollars! thats just under 2 poundsi bought one from a shop for 15 pounds, about 30 dollars.even form the manufacturers they cost about that. i.e if you buy one from canon for your dv cam.i feel ripped off
  11. if you are trying to blur the whole image im pretty sure, on a livecd at the moment so cant check, that you: dont need to select anything, un select all click effects>blur>the choose the blur you want just change the variables to what you need click ok hope that helps
  12. ok then. well i enjoy those 3d panoramics. normal panoramics seem a bit odd but ok.really the 35mm is king but for a wider view then a montage of 35mm photos is greatwhen normal film cameras take a panoramic photo do they atually change the focal length or do they just letter box the negative and then develop larger? it seems to me that the ones i have seen are the latter
  13. i used yahoo video search a while ago for a video project and that was absolutly brilliant. i found good, relevant sources with a good connection for download.would google be adapting their image algorythms (sorry no idea on spelling) and therefor making it as good as the google search, could you say the best on the internet?
  14. please define panoramic as opposed to still.still being a normal 35mm size photo?and panoranic being some kind of super wide still image?orbeing a rotating image on a computer that places you 'inside' the photographic location?thanks
  15. thanks for the site compliment - it needs a little tweeking but it getting therei need to try the ftp option on blogger. how do you think this will work. is it ok to give out ftp details from Xisto to make this thing work. im very apreaciative and dont want to annoy them.i might try that start idea but i also dont want blogger to get annoyed either becasue i like the service. how mad do you think they would get?thanks.
  16. thanks for that. so much to learn - im sure i will use it soon especially as i have 2 1/2 gentoo installs ahead.
  17. ok thanks so far. sorry my description was so vauge. im better at drawing but its pretty well impossible to draw it in ac art!it is on the same card as the port for my monitor. there is also an s-video port on there too.the port is not a 'normal' computer style port, not like the ones on that link, it is very square edged with three rows of eight square pin holes and 3 longer pins fanning out of one end. when i say square esged i mean a right angle.so if its on my video card do you think it can cope with dual monitors? yay
  18. i tried to end this thread with that last post of mine. one thing is for sure though, ubuntu or not, linux uses can talk for years about distros that because there are just so many, but again that is a different thread altogeather
  19. i put down the guitar becasue it is so diverse - ok keyboard is more but that is sort of different - the is something so brilliant about guitars and i guess their cool image swayed me. im not sure though, i guessed when you said drums you meant western drums - african drums are awsome. the other day at a festival i saw a group of strangers make brilliant music just using african drumsreally the instruments i like best are the ones being played to make great music
  20. could anyone tell me the name of the port my pc has. it is a video port becasue i have seen it on projectors at school. it is pretty much a rectangle with lots of square holes for pins. im not sure what this is but i was wondering if this could me used for a dual monitor set upthanks
  21. i agree. the whole point of artists spending hours in the studio to record their masterpieces is not just in porduce individual tracks. the playlist of an album is nearly as important as the tracks that make it up. i surpose the ipod shuffle is targeted and people who normally listen to the radio and dont really care but just want noise in their ears.
  22. i think this looks like the best place to comunicate with the administrators, please tell me if anywhere else would have been better.i wondered if it would be a good idea to have a 'how-to request' forum where users can post a thread for a how-to they need and then ofther users can have a look to see if they could write one. just an idea but the other day i wanted a forum like that and couldnt find onethanks - this forum is great, its like a linux distro support forum, an artistic network, a web developers tip swaping site and more
  23. thanks. ive got something working at the moment but the problem is that i need to get rid of the bar at the top of all blogger pages. i think this is only because it is hosted on blogger.com not because it is the free service. does anyone know how to change it so that it is an ftp blogger account feeding to a page on my server? this is the problem i no have inless anyone can work out any javascript that might know the top bar off, but that would not be idea for the terms of use and therefor only a last option. what i have at the moment is here - my site at the moment thanks
  24. turns out my gentoo attempt failed only to a spelling mistake. i forgot a 'u' in 'default' in my fstab and it all fell apart. a friend found and fixed that for me, very mild dyslexia and hacking - not a useful combo!!!!!! this mean im not as a big a failure as i thought i was and im gonna jump in at the deep end, gentoo user to be.but ive been running the ubuntu live cd and it is all very nice so to anyone who wants a nice and simple looking distro get it - i think it would be very good for schoolsme, im gonna get my full power from my p4 ht - yes!!! Expect alot of install question threads from me
  25. Notice from NilsC: This post need to be in quotes. You had 14 hosting credits, The script took 35 hosting credits away, I gave you back so you have 3 hosting credits. Next time I will add the 24 hosting credits I gave back to the amount of credits reduced. You should use quote tags anytime you post a log or a quote like that. i really need to get my winxp back on the net, at the moment i have to knoppix for the net - not a really bad thing but is a bit annoying. here is the hijackthis log file. i can only think to copy and paste - sorry. i have alot of processes - too many!!! any ideas/suggestions/help - thanks
