  1. MC, I tried your suggestion, and it did work. Unfortunately, when I clicked to go to another page on the same website, the IE favicon returned. I would have to repeat the click and drag maneuver on every webpage if I wanted to see the favicon on every webpage. Oh well, yet another reason why I'll stick with Firefox and Opera... l
  2. For those of you who have not thoroughly read the rules, Xisto rules state: Advertising on the forum is not allowed under any but the following conditions: * a website in the review website forum providing it does not compete with any of our services. * when it offers a solution to a problem stated. This means it is against Xisto rules to advertise competing webhosts. Failure to adhere to Xisto rules may result in penalties against violators. ***** TOPIC CLOSED *****
  3. I also tend to rely on Google on my searches. But what I also like is that my Firefox 1.0 browser has a search box with a drop-down menu that lets me choose from Google, Yahoo, Amazon.com, Creative Commons, Dictionary.com, eBay, Streetdirectory SG or any other search engine I wish to add. I went ahead and added Ask Jeeves, Wikipedia, IMDB (the Internet Movie Database) and CDDB (find album, artist, and song information) to my pull-down menu! Freedom of choice is good!
  4. Wait 'til 2015...by then the things you're using now will be very funny and old-fashioned!
  5. Very nice vujsa! One suggestion...after introducing the title tag, I would mention the purpose of the title tag. (i.e. The text between the opening and closing title tags is displayed by your browser at the very top in the window title bar--not in the web page. The title text is also displayed when the webpage is bookmarked and the Bookmarks (or Favorites) list is shown.) Also there can be only one title per webpage.
  6. Very nice thread you started here vujsa! Another thing comments are good for is hiding code that you don't want a browser to display (perhaps because you don't need that code anymore or you're troubleshooting). This is called commenting out the code. I plan to do this to my webpages (whenever I get a new password PM'ed to me so that I can access cPanel for the first time, lol). Nice work, vujsa!
  7. Sorry to be a pest but my request to be hosted was approved on Thursday and I still haven't been able to log in to cPanel at all (it's now Monday morning). I realize there were some server problems over the weekend. Hopefully they're fixed. Can I have my password reset and PM'ed to me please? Thanks in advance.
  8. I have used my cPanel user name, sdof2, and the cPanel password (which I know is different from my forum password) but I haven't been able to log in to cPanel at all. Could I have my password reset and PM'ed to me please?
  9. What happens if you've never been able to log into cPanel and you then reset your password? Since the email address in cPanel never got changed, wouldn't the new password get sent somewhere else? That might explain why I (and some other people) haven't got their new password. So what do we do next to access cPanel?
  10. A "UNIQUE" counter...never heard of that one before but I really like that idea. I think I'll try it out on my site. In fact, I think I'll try pairing it up with a regular counter. Thanks for sharing that with us.
  11. Hey, looks great! Glad to help! I hope to have my site up in the next couple of days so that I can provide a link.
  12. Ok, these are like the first ones I posted but instead of that extra white outline, its blue and matches that of your picture. It may not look clean here but it will look much better on your picture. (This is a common problem with transparent GIF images.) * * * *
  13. Does anybody know why FTP programs are referred to as "clients"? I have to admit that's not real clear to me. For what its worth, I've only used SmartFTP and it's worked pretty well for me so far.
  14. Hey this is fun...check these out. Design 1 Design 2 Design 3 Design 4 Just one thing, though...your original logo says "SAGE" but your posts say "SAGA". Do you have a preference?
  15. Why thank you MC. Really most of the credit should go to my software, lol. Its not the most trendy or popular graphics program and its definitely not Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Its actually a desktop publishing software called "Microsoft PictureIt! Publishing". It works pretty well for my purposes. I've gotten rather popular as a creator of sig images in the hobby forum I participate in.
  16. Whenever I'm not online, I like to read books about designing websites. These are the books I own on that topic:Sams Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 HoursSams Teach Yourself CSS in 24 HoursHTML 4 For DummiesCreating Web Pages For DummiesEasy Web Page Creation (Published by Microsoft Press)As you can see, I like books that make the subject easy to understand. These are pretty good books for beginners. Can anyone recomment a good beginners book on PHP?
  17. Hi there. Just thought I'd try my hand at making a couple of logos for you. * * * *
  18. I have to agree. The choice of background (whether color or image) depends on the website's target viewers. Will the site be aimed at professionals, gamers, comsumers, forum users, hobbyists, anime enthusiasts, the website owners family, etc.? What looks "professional" to one group will look drab, boring and "old" to another group. As evidenced by everyone's responses here, you can't please everybody. One other thing...if you use images for your background, its best to make them small so that they tile across and down your page--it will load quicker. Any dial-up users out there ever run out of patience waiting for a large image to download? Always make sure there's plenty of contrast between the text and the background. Do the same for visited/unvisited/mouseover text links, too.
  19. If optimizing your computer to perform at its best is important to you, then you've probably used some benchmarking/diagnostic tools on your computer. Here's some links to some popular computer benchmarking apps that I've used: SiSoftware Sandra: Free Lite version download (32-bit support) SiSandra Personal 2004 SP2: Overclockers Club version download Belarc Advisor: Free Personal PC Audit (free download version 6.1f) Operating Systems: Runs on Windows 95/98/Me, NT 4, Windows 2000, XP and Windows Server 2003. Browsers: Requires IE 3 or Netscape 3, and higher versions. Also runs on Opera, Mozilla, and Firebird. File size: 605 KB. PC Pitstop: Online diagnostic testing. Have you used others as good or better than these? Are there any we should avoid?
  20. I used tables to layout my first webpages just so I could gain some HTML skills. Then I decided I wanted to learn CSS and redid my webpage layout using CSS (wasn't all that difficult). I love CSS. It offers much more convenience, flexibility and style to websites. I read many online CSS tutorials and also bought a book on CSS to get a handle on it. In general, tables are discouraged for laying out webpages, although many, many sites still use tables for their layout. I try to just use tables for tabular data.
  21. My webpages are pretty much only html and css. I just inserted the code into the bottom of my webpages and saved them as .php (except for my index.html page). All of my webpages get crawled, even the ones that don't have metatags. I don't use frames in my webpages, so I really can't offer any advice on that. Here's an example of an email I got as a result of this script: January 22, 2005, 8:37 pm - Google crawled http:/ /http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ EDIT: I just entered "RomanKonrad" into Google (2/15/05 9:20 pm PST) and your website (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) was listed at the top. Congratulations!
  22. For my HTML editor, I use NoteTab Light 4.92 (Freeware version). The Clipbook and Tabs features are very handy. I like it a lot but I wish it had a color coding feature for the various tags. Anyone know of a free HTML editor that has this feature?
  23. Here's some web-related terms that I think belong in an on-site glossary for forum members and guests:ASPCGICronPerlJavaJavascriptPHPPythonSSISQLFTPURLCSSHTMLXHTMLDHTMLXMLW3CThese terms are probably just the tip of the iceberg. Now I'm not exactly a total computer newb but I'd be hard-pressed to give a clear, concise explanation of half of these terms. Would a considerable number of members benefit from seeing an on-site glossary of these and other web-related terms?
  24. I use a Maxtor 60 GB hard drive (7200 rpm). Works great so far but I've already filled up almost 50 GB. I also have a Western Digital Caviar 36400 6 GB hard drive that crashed on me a few years ago--maybe one day when I have time, I'll try to recover the files on it.
  25. Here's a script I found that works well for me. It will trigger an email to be sent to you whenever Google crawls your webpages. The email will state which webpage was crawled along with the date & time the page was crawled. Just cut and paste the code below. Make sure you substitute your own contact email addy for myemail@mydomain.com below. <?if(eregi("googlebot",$HTTP_USER_AGENT)){if ($QUERY_STRING != "") {$url = "http://".$SERVER_NAME.$PHP_SELF.'?'.$QUERY_STRING;}else {$url = "http://".$SERVER_NAME.$PHP_SELF;}$today = date("F j, Y, g:i a");mail("myemail@mydomain.com", "Googlebot detected on http://$SERVER_NAME", "$today - Google crawled $url");}?>As I understand it, this will only work on .php pages. (I simply inserted the above code and changed the .html extensions to .php in each webpage--worked great! I found that Googlebots crawled my website a couple times a month and I had never even submitted my domain to Google.
