  1. "Warez"--now there's another concept I'm not real familiar with. All I know about that, is that it is some kind of illegal/unethical software.
  2. Hey, I did it! Thanks m^e! Another new toy--I mean tool to work with! I'll have to spend some time learning the features. I hope it offers audio, video and free donuts!
  3. This sounds like it could be a nice idea but I have a question: What is an "irc channel"? Please forgive my ignorance but I'm not familiar with the concept of "irc". I get the impression that it's some sort of instant messenger or chatroom. Just a reminder: When introducing new ideas/concepts, please don't assume that everyone is familiar with all technical terms and abbreviations. I'm eager to learn about this new "irc" thing and give it a test drive. So I pasted irc.dal.net into my browser but it timed out. Am I doing something wrong?
  4. What I would like to know is, how does one convert hex color codes to HSV (Hue, Saturation, value/brightness/intensity)?
  5. You might consider just turning off your speakers when browsing the forums. My speakers are off almost all the time. I usually have a headset plugged in instead.
  6. When I first got my computer, I was very much interested in customizing it. So I did a search of various keywords like "desktop themes", "skins", "how to change login screens", etc. Lots of wonderful entries came up. One of my most cherished downloads is the one that let me change my logon screen. Its called LogonStudio by Stardock. Its free and allowed me to use a nice, big photo of me and my 2 kids for my logon and logout screen. I'm real happy with it and have had no problems with it.
  7. Good news! I figured what the problem was. It was a setting in my ZoneAlarm 4 firewall software. I went into the ZA Control Center-->Privacy-->Site List and found my site in the Site List. I changed the Private Header setting from "Disallow" to "Allow" and then refreshed my webpage. Lo and behold there's my images--and now I also enjoy Hotlink Protection. Boy, am I glad. Thanks for all your help Nils. When you said you could still see all the images, even after refreshing, I kinda figured it was one of software settings. I'll have to remember this solution in case someone else runs into this problem.
  8. Excellent thread topic, JB! Especially since the admin of a small chat group I belong to, wants to switch from Yahoo chat to MSN chat. With MSN chat , ya gotta sign up for their .NET passport thing. At least with Yahoo chat, some of us could use a mic/speaker set to talk to each other. Unfortunately, Yahoo chat also bumps everyone out within an hour of entering the chat room--so inconvenient to have to re-enter the chat room. I don't know if MSN chat has the talk feature that Yahoo has, but I'd like know if any chat scripts have that talk feature. In fact, do any of them offer a videochat feature?
  9. That's what I saw too when I clicked the link you posted 40 minutes ago. But then I refreshed it and the images began to disappear. I've also noticed in my FTP client that there's a WWW folder that has the same files as my public_html file. Could this have something to do with my problem? Gotta go to sleep now. See you tomorrow and thanks!
  10. Hmmm.... have you tried refreshing the page? I'm looking at my site in Firefox, Opera, Netscape and IE and none of them show my website with the images (Hotlink Protection is still enabled).
  11. What happens if you refresh the page? I still have Hotlink Protection enabled.
  12. At first I thought the problem was solved because I could see the images. But then I noticed one image was missing. I refreshed the page and many more images disappeared. I refreshed it again and all of the images were gone. So I still have the same problem.
  13. My cPanel Hotlink Protection settings are the same as yours, except of ourse I have my domain/subdomains listed in the "Urls to Allow Access" box.I just now enabled Hotlink Protection. Let's see if we can see the images now.
  14. I don't quite understand...click "activate"? Where is that located? When I entered what link?EDIT: Oh, the activate button in cPanel's Hotlink Protection page...yes, I did click it enable Hotlink Protection. That caused all of the website images to disappear. I then went back to cPanel's Hotlink Protection page and clicked "Disable" which resulted in the return of the images to my website.
  15. Thanks for your help Nils. I don't see an image in your last post, just "user posted image".
  16. At the time of this post, I have hotlink protection disabled and I can see the picture. The problem is that when I enable hotlink protection, my own website won't show the images. And like I mentioned before, the "Urls to Allow Access:" box lists: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I'm still stumped...
  17. Here's an example of the img tags I use in my code: <img style="border-width: thick; border-color: white; border-style: groove; " src="images/andystadiumbaz151x500gif.gif" width=500 height=141> I also have unchecked the box labelled "Allow direct requests (ie. entering the url to an image in your browser)".
  18. When I enable Hotlink Protection in Xisto's cPanel for my website (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/), all of my images disappear. The "Urls to Allow Access:" box lists "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; and "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;. I would think this would let me use my own images in my website. I disabled Hotlink Protection and my images have reappeared. How can I enable Hotlink Protection and still have my images displayed on my website?
  19. I use a program that rotates a selection of my favorite wallpapers. The settings will let me change the wallpaper every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, hour, day, week, or never. It rotates about 200 different wallpapers for me (I have it set to change the wallpaper every 30 minutes). It can also be used as a screensaver, too. The name of the program is called CoolWallpaper. I got it about 2 years ago and it was free. http://www.coolwallpaper.com/ now offers a free version and a $29.95 version. Here's one of my desktops (I use a dual-monitor setup).
  20. I'm not an expert in the area of civil rights and privacy but I am a parent of a high school freshman and a 7th grader. I don't believe that monitoring the activities of students (or teachers/administrators) on school computer equipment is an invasion of privacy. I would want responsible school personnel monitoring my child's and her fellow classmates computer activities. But as banjosforpeace stated "although you have a degree of power, you shouldn't get carried away with it." If those with the power do get carried away with it, the result may be laws restricting that power. And that would make it easier for the bad people to do bad things with school computers. I definitely would not want my kids and their fellow students to have the opportunity to do bad things with school computers. Besides, it could lead to lawsuits against the school administrators and school districts.
  21. I copied this from Photobucket's FAQ page. Maybe this is why your images disappeared (although your account apparently didn't disappear)? Q: Are free accounts ever deleted? A: Free accounts that are not logged into or havn't had any direct links for 90 days are removed. To avoid this log in to your account once a month. With ImageShack, I've never had to register or open an account (although you could if you want). And their file size limit is larger than Photobucket's. Their FAQ is really nice and customer-friendly. My sig image has been on ImageShack since November and I have never seen it replaced by the dreaded red X, lol.
  22. Too many unwanted results usually happen because a user did not enter detailed search terms. Instead of entering "Toyota", try entering search terms that are more specific to what you want to find. For instance: If I want to find a place in Chicago that sells Toyotas, then enter "Chicago Toyota dealer" If you want to know about the feature of various models of 2005 Toyotas, then enter "2005 Toyota features" If you want to buy a used Toyota, you might enter "used Toyota" or "used Toyota for sale" This is called "phrased searching' and will save you lots of time. Make sure that you include the quotation marks whenever you use phrased searching. For what its worth, here's a link to Google's "The Essentials of Google Search'. It will help you to see why Google searching can be so effective.
  23. I guess you could say that I'm also basically self-taught. I did some on-line tutorials, enrolled in a couple of AOL's online classes and bought a couple of beginner HTML books. Now the letters H, T, M, L are not nearly as intimidating as they used to be, lol. I've also showed my 12-year-old son some HTML and now he's able to make his own basic webpages.
  24. cryptonx may have confused java and javascript but I think he's right when he says it's not gonna work with all sites. When I tried it, the popup box just gave me the date & time that the webpage downloaded to my computer (in other words, the current time). Is this due to the site or my browser or something else?
  25. For more information on Gizoogle, you can click here to read about it on another Xisto forum thread.
