Great Windows Tweaks
JimBeam1405241475 replied to Stand & Fight's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I would hope you have been smart enough to run programs like 'Ad-Aware' and 'Spybot Search & Destroy' already, but just incase you haven't, make sure you download and run these programs. These two programs will usually delete all the spyware/adware on your computer, but sometimes some of it slides through... giving you constant headaches. For these little buggers... I urge you to visit the Gladiator Security Forum. On these forums will you find a quick guide on how to properly install and run HijackThis. For a current version of HijackThis, go to THIS THREAD. Once you have downloaded and installed the program to an appropriate folder, run it and save your log. Post that log in THIS FORUM SECTION and within 24 hours you will receive instructions on how to get rid of all the baddies on your computer. These guys have saved me a couple of times already when Ad-Aware has failed me... I can almost guarantee they will get rid of your pop-ups and toolbars. -
Since P2P sharing became popular it has been proven that media sales have risen. In particular, CD sales. Music sharing seems to be the biggest problem, it's what the RIAA mainly target. Going from these facts... I think the RIAA are only doing more harm to the music industry by tryng to forever eliminate illegal file sharing. How ironic will it be if they finally shut down all illegal file sharing on the internet, and then see CD sales decrease again!? They will never be able to stop all illegal file sharing though, whenever they eliminate one P2P network, another one pops up on the scene. It happened when Napster was shut down... and it'll happen again if BitTorrent gets shut down. In fact, a new program is already in the process of creation that runs in the same way as BitTorrent... it is being created by the owner of suprnova.org along with other unknown companies. The program will be called eXeem. I expect eXeem won't be the only program to pop up in the near future if BitTorrent is shut down.

P2P programs(merged) What P2P program are you using?
JimBeam1405241475 replied to prolifik's topic in Computer Networks
Not exactly. I used suprnova mainly, and if they didn't have anything I wanted I would just go into the forums and request. If it was an album request, usually someone will have it and seed it. Music was easy to get. You just have to be a part of the sites forum community. Of course though, some things were hard to come across... and sometimes you had people requesting stupid things, like new games months before their release But usually the people are cool. -

Woah, no icons? I couldn't imagine having no icons on my desktop... just personal preference. It makes it so much easier to get to my stuff. Programs and games that I use frequently, I find it very convenient to have their icon right there on the desktop.I'd hate having to search through folders all the time, or hitting Start>All Programs>>> just to get to what I'm looking for. I don't know, maybe it's just me. You probably just prefer looks over convenience... that's completely fine, I'm just amazed. Anyone else prefer no icons on their desktop too? EDIT: By the way, it's a cool pic... nice looking desktop -
P2P programs(merged) What P2P program are you using?
JimBeam1405241475 replied to prolifik's topic in Computer Networks
Yeah BitTorrent is most definately the most reliable source of quality files. I have never downloaded a corrupt copy of any album/game/movie or anything from BitTorrent. Unlike KaZaA for instance, in which you get those really annoying sounds in the middle of the songs you download. I have downloaded a few full albums using eDonkey, the only problem was it was so slow.My prefered client is definately BitTorrent, but for some smaller files I use KaZaA Lite, and sometimes eDonkey. Recently a lot of the good BitTorrent sites and tracker sites have been sued and been put out of business, so it looks like BitTorrent may become useless some time in the future (I really hope not though!). I'm sure most people here know of suprnova.org.. it was one of the sites that was forced to be brought down by the RIAA. Anyway, they are in the process of making a new P2P program with other unknown companies that will work in the same way as BitTorrent. The new program will be called eXeem. They have announced that it will be funded by adware though. Although they did say it will be an optional feature.. kind of like the optional adware feature on MSN Plus! for anyone who used/s that. After reading this thread though I will definately try out a couple other programs that some people have suggested. -
Which Is Faster? Dsl Or Cable? Which is faster???
JimBeam1405241475 replied to sydney28th's topic in Computer Networks
Yeah I totally agree. At my old place I had OptusNet Cable, and it was f***ing great! Speeds of around 400kb/sec were the norm, and on a good day I could reach speeds of up to 1MB/sec. Ahh those were the days. But last September I moved house and cable is not available here, so we had to go with ADSL. We've got a 1.5Mb connection, but we rarely even connect at anything close to that speed. According to our line speed testers, the best connection we ever hit is around 1.2Mb... but that's rare. The best actual download speeds we ever get are around 120kb/sec... back when I had cable I'd be pissed off that I was getting such slow speeds, but now I'm over the moon with this connection hitting those speeds. Here's a screen shot of a graph listing Australian line speeds by ISP. You can see that the two cable providers (OptusNet Cable and Telstra Bigpond Cable) are far superior to the other ADSL providers. -

I got the wallpaper from here;http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ He has a few other interesting pictures on there too, all his original work. To browse through the images, use the toolbar in the top left of the web page, the "art" link. As you'll see, he uses the guitar angel picture as his site background too. I just thought it was so abstract and interesting... I had to use it! Other wallpapers I usually get from; http://www.wincustomize.com/ -
This is a cool little site that I found on another forum. It's called Toogle, and it's basically just a spoof site of Google (Duh!). You can use it to search for anything you want, anything at all, and it will display your result as an ascii image. It's quite a fun site, and it can bring up some very interesting results. I searched Jim Beam and of course got an ascii art of the Jim Beam logo. It's great... hopefully you guys enjoy it. http://www.c6.org/toogle/ Have fun.

The iPod Shuffle Finally, an iPod for any occasion
JimBeam1405241475 replied to Brian1405241474's topic in Hardware Workshop
Yeah it's neat and everything... but like you said, I'd rather get an iPod mini or 20GB as well. I personally don't like that it doesn't have a screen. And I believe they only brought this thing out to make a few extra bucks. Something new to put out there so people can buy it and say "hey I've got the new iPod Shuffle! I am teh 1337!". Wow, that's the first time I've actually used any sort of "1337 speak", it's kind of weird. Anyway back on track... yeah I like this little thing, but definately wouldn't buy one. I doubt they'll be as popular as the regular iPod and iPod mini's. -
Oh ok... thanks for explaining that for me, it makes sense now.

Not exactly missing posts, but incorrect post count. The other day when I had reached 10 posts, I decided to request my hosting account. That request post was of course my 11th post. The next day when I logged on my post count was back down to 10. I thought "fine, one of my posts must have been deleted for some reason" and basically shrugged it off as no problem. But this problem keeps re-occuring, for example when I logged on today my post count was only 12, but I knew I had posted more than that. I checked the posts I had made using the "find members posts", and 16 posts came up. Now of course, this post will be my 17th post... and my post count will read 13... I'm just wandering why not all of my posts are being counted towards my post count? Is it just a method the moderators use... deleting posts they believe are not "good" posts from post counts, to help them when a user applies for a free hosting account? This would definately make sense... but it has never been mentioned to me, or written anywhere that this is common practice on these boards, so I'm a little confused. Now, I'm not at all complaining about my incorrect post count, rather looking for a reason behind it.Thanks.

Wow I'm actually quite amazed with the poll results. Like I previously said, I'm no expert or anything... but just from what I've gathered from friends opinions and other people I talk to online, AMD seems to be the more popular CPU. And about AMD's being loud? I've never had any problems with mine. Usually I leave my computer on all day and night (as I'm sure many others probably do too) so it stays on for days constantly without a reboot, and it runs quiet and fast.. at all times. Maybe there's a difference between regular AMD's and the newer AMD 64 bit's? I don't know. I love my Athlon64 3000+ though.

Umm no, I'm not doing that. Never knew I was supposed to.A simple guide should be posted somewhere to make this all a little less complicated. Thanks for the reply, I'll give that a go now.

I was just very recenty granted my hosting account, but I'm having some little problems. I don't know where my site is! I can log into my using using an FTP client (CuteFTP) and upload files no problem. I can also log into my cpanel using http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ , but by no other means. I tried uploading a .html file to use as my home page, called index.htm. Now, it probably has be to named differently or what ever to be used as the index page, I am unsure... but when I try to go to my subdomain jimbeam.astahost.com I get an error saying the URL could not be found. Why can't it be found? My account was granted with that as the subdomain wasn't it? I don't know how to get this working. I've also uploaded a gif file as a test, but I have no idea which URL this is stored at? In my cpanel it says the file is there, and it is using up ~2mb of space, so obviously my account is there! But how do access it in my browser? The file is called divingboard.gif (same as my signiture), so I would expect the URL to be; http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ but I seriously have no idea what the URL to my site is. Anyone else having this problem? Hopefully someone out there can help me, I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance to anyone who has any tips, JimBeam

Recorder DVD Double Layer Recorder DVD Double Layer
JimBeam1405241475 replied to iGuest's topic in Hardware Workshop
I don't mean to sound arrogant or anything, but what point are you trying to make with this post? Are you looking for peoples opinions on this drive? -
I used to use RetRight but I got annoyed with it after a little while so I uninstalled it. Then one day I was a little bored and searching through random stuff at download.com, I came across DAP and thought I'd try it out, not believing it could actually speed up my downloads. Well, to my surprise, it sped up my downloads! So I've been using that ever since. However I did change over to Firefox a little while ago, and DAP doesn't automatically integrate into it, so I've been using the Firefox download manager mainly lately, apart from the larger files that I want to be downloaded quicker.

Four votes and I can already see a trend starting, and exactly how I expected it to go. I personally have an AMD Athlon64 3000+ and am totally happy with it. I've only ever owned 2 computers, and my first also had an AMD (old HP system with an AMD 700Mhz) which did a great job back in the day. From my experiences, and hearing of friends experiences with different CPU's, I don't think I'll change from AMD, at least not to Intel. My vote goes to AMD. I still want to know what other people think, and why.

Guesss What Another Hole In Ie
JimBeam1405241475 replied to RGF's topic in Security issues & Exploits
From what I have read in PC magazines and various web sites... firefox is actually no safer than IE. These authors have said that the only reason we keep seeing all these exploits in IE is because it is the most widely used program around the world. These people who attack internet users will look for flaws in IE and make exploits accordingly, because they know more people will be affected. If Firefox was more common than IE we'd probably start seeing Firefox users being attacked. I don't know, I could be wrong, but this is what I have read from expert opinions. If you can prove this theory wrong, please go ahead and do so... I just thought I'd add a little discussion to this thread. -
What Is The Best Brand Of Harddisk? Who has longer life?
JimBeam1405241475 replied to bryandel's topic in Hardware Workshop
I haven't had much experience with different drives, so I don't really have a lot of solid ground to stand on for this one... but I have to go with Seagate. I currently use a 120GB Seagate drive and have never had any problems with it. Also from what I have heard from friends and other people on forums, I am inclined to lean towards Seagate. To me it seems to be the more reputable brand, and seems to be one of the most reliable according to friends and other people. My choice may be a little biased, but it is the impression I have of this brand. -
You obviously forgot to do that with your Creative Zen then, didn't you But seriously, I completely agree with your post... his "food chain" did seem to be a little biased, although you could argue the reasons he placed those items in that order. This is just his opinion though, and I don't think his too far off the mark. He's just posted his own opinion, after doing some research... you can't flame the guy for posting his preferences. Btw, AMD > Intel

The ever popular CPU debate. Which one is better? I'll let you guys decide.Personally I don't have a lot of knowledge of the 2 CPU's, so my preference may somewhat be a little biased from what I have been told by friends and the such. Vote for the CPU you prefer, and post your reasons for choosing that brand.I'm not going to give my preference just yet, or the reasons behind it in an attempt to not start a bias trend. I'm quite interested in seeing peoples' responses to this, although I can guess which way this poll might slide.I know this may not seem to be the most original poll question, but I am curious to see what the majority of people prefer. I also hope to maybe learn a little more knowledge of the 2... but we'll see what happens Let the voting begin

Which Video Card Is Better, ATI Radeon, Or N-Vidia
JimBeam1405241475 replied to lxcid's topic in Hardware Workshop
I totally agree with you. I have a very similar system that I built myself; AMD Athlon64 3000+ 512MB Ram 120GB HDD + 20GB Slave Drive ATi 9600SE 128MB All the other information I can't remember at the moment, I'm really not THAT into my computer. But this system, compared to an equivelant system made by DEL/Hewlett Packard etc. cost me next to nothing. In fact it was probably at least 1/3 of the cost of buying from a major manufacturer. This was the first system I've built myself from scratch, and I will never turn back again. Building from scratch definately is the way to go.
