  1. Fair enough. However, I would say that this is not the 'meaning' of life in the sense others are talking about. Instead, I would call this the 'method of life', as it is what life does. Meaning, on the other hand, is harder to come by and I personally think it is a self-deluding question.
  2. The thing is, this is what the media chooses to show. Not because the media has a left or right bias, but because this sort of screaming and yelling causes more people to watch the media, which means they make more money. Most people who are gay are very quiet about it. Just like most muslims are nice people. However, it only takes a few loud ones to make things difficult. Also, don't forget the cycle feeds itself. The more angrily people who dislike gay people yell and scream and make noise, the more the gay population feels they need to defend themselves and not back down(perhaps rightly). However, this causes the angry ones to become even more upset, and the cycle continues. The only way to have it end is for the groups to act more hospitable. Indeed, the more the 'gay population' acts with dignity and grace, the more they put the lie to the angry and hateful words of those who despise them.
  3. Ok, once more for the record.EVOLUTION IS NOT A THEORY. I know they keep saying that on TV, and I know they keep saying that online, and I know people always seem to refer to it as the 'theory of evolution'. However, those people are speaking incorrectly.Evolution is a scientific fact. Which means that it is directly observable. It might be harder to see than watching a ball drop when you let go of it, but it is in the same class scientifically.Natural Selection explains evolution, much like gravity explains why the ball drops. Most of the time, when people talk of 'the theory of evolution' they really mean 'that human beings evolved from a non-human ancestor via natural selection'.Then they begin whining about how it 'isnt proven' and so on.NEWS FLASH: You cannot prove anything happened in the past (in the scientific sense). You can simply provide overwhelming evidence. In the common useage of the word, we call overwhelming evidence 'proof'. In science however, this is not the case. The problem comes in the confusion between the scientific form of the word 'proof' and the colloquial form of the word 'proof'. In science, one can only 'prove things' via prediction and controlled variables along with a well described and specific thesis. Even then, what you are finding is that something is not disproven. There is no 'absolute proof' in science, only in mathematics. Also note that you cannot 'predict' something will happen in the past tense. Therefore, asking for 'scientific proof' of something that happened in the past is asking for something that is a contradiction in terms, in many ways. What you can ask for is evidence. So please, no whining about things being 'just a theory', or 'lack of proof'. That is all a bunch of BS. What exists is evidence.
  4. Don't refer to people as 'the gay', it is demeaning and dehumanizing. Sort of like saying, 'the black' or 'the spic'. The answer is that there are either two grooms, or two brides. Its really not hard. This is simply not true. Psychological research on this subject shows no such 'warping' other than the kids not being homophobic. Sexuality is hardwired, so having two fathers will be no worse than being raised in a man-woman family or being raised by a father + uncle or some similar that has happened plenty of people. Sorry, too late on both counts. Guess what? Nothing bad happened. No crazy suicides, no warped children, nada. Once again, it is how the child is TREATED by the parents, not the nominal sex or sexuality of the parents that matters. Why should they be silent? Because you don't like 'their kind'? Too bad. Chances are they don't like 'your kind' either. It is not absurd for them to marry, or adopt kids. And I wonder how you would handle a person having a kid while in a 'straight' relationship and then realizing that they are gay, say after a divorce. Gay people are not diseased, sick, or crippled. I suggest getting your eyes and heart checked if you can't see that. There might be something wrong...
  5. By this do you mean you were raised/baptised christian but no longer believe in god? Not believing in god and being a chrisitian are sorta incompatible.
  6. Have you tried Ubuntu? It is based on debian but built to be for user friendly. I think it does an ok job
  7. It may help picture quality and color accuracy, but it won't do a thing for gaming performanc.
  8. Out of curiosity, how is being a christian not easy?
  9. We already have a couple threads like this in other forums. In particular, the Operating Systems forum. You should use those, or open a thread there.
  10. Actually, apple didn't steal NextStep. Jobs founded NeXT, which developed NeXTstep. Latter, an OSS version was made called GNUstep. Finally, Apple bought NeXT and used their software to build OSX. So, it began with Apple and is still Apple that does the new stuff.
  11. Well, for theravada, there is no praying to a 'higher power'. It is different in a few mahayanda sects(in particular pure land). They do pray, kinda. They chant to ask for entrance into the 'pure land', a realm where it is supposedly easier to achieve enlightenment. However, really the pure land is supposed to be inside the person, and the chant is meditation to get there. But few pure land buddhists actually treat it that way. For most, its prayer. But for me, as theravada, not so much.
  12. I am, to be specific, a modern western theravada buddhist. You know, to be specific.Oh, and to be similarly technical, I am also an atheist. Buddhists don't have a god. Unless they happen to believe in one from some earlier religious background. It doesn't always work out so well theologically, but that never stopped anyone. More the merrier really.
  13. Ok, it is against forum rules to copy paste things from other websites. Please read the forum rules. We mean them. You are new, so for now you will only get the warning. Consider yourself warned(see the warning meter on the left with your name?). Don't do it again.
  14. Actually, for the cost of 'upgrading' your old laptop, you could buy a new laptop with the same or better specs and a nicer Li-ion battery.(hint: get an ibook)
  15. Hopefully microsoft's dominance will be broken, and Mac will come to power. Then, instead of OSS copying MS's crap (only minus some security issues), the OSS people will copy mac, and actually make their software userfriendly.I can only hope...
  16. I think this is more a problem with the legal system than with 'weak individuals'. Stupidity shouldn't be rewarded like this.
  17. I partially agree with you. It is certainly a weakness on their part. However, you cannot just say, "go be strong!". It would require them to be strong to take your advice. So, the question then becomes how to 'cure' their weakness, since they can't do it totally alone. If they could they would be strong, and that would sort of defeat the whole thing.
  18. Well, the Catholic Church no longer vouches for it. So, considering they would be the ones who would most like to claim that it is real, I wll take their word.
  19. Things like menu items and such are totally legal. Microsoft is actually the one who made that the case when they won a case vs. apple in terms of the look and feal of their OS. As to answer your questions, Firefox is not based on IE. It uses a different HTML rendering engine and such. As for adding the buttons, RSS and tabs...well, what do you expect? Its a web browser. Thats really ALL IE does right now. The other thing may be that FF tries to follow the useability conventions of whatever OS it is running on. Therefore, it will behave like other windows browsers on windows, linux browsers on linux, and mac browsers on mac. Or at least, that is their ideal.
  20. That word comes from a greek school of thought that was less concerned with truth than how to win argumens. Thus it comes into its current meaning.
  21. Tell me when you actuallty get a check. These things have been tried in the past but never worked.
  22. They still offer it, but its beign fazed out. But really, its not an intermediatry between the mini and the imac. It has the same internals as the mini but with a built in monitor. So, really its just a mini+ monitor, and the mini is more portable and looks neater. So, what they really need is an 800 G5 mini.
  23. No, you misunderstand what I said. I call it a design flaw that humans feel anger and hate. Because of these things, humans do terrible acts. They may choose to do them, but why give them the impetus? Without hate or anger or greed, people would still have choice. They COULD choose to do horrible things, but they would not(or at least wouldn't do such things for those reasons). God could even give humans the ability to have hate and anger and greed, but make them more easily consciously controlled. We could wake up, and choose not to be angry that day. Or set the conditions ourselves for our anger, or, or or. All of these are better ways of 'building' humans, given the list of things 'god does not want you to do'. I personally don't think god had anything to do with the natural disasters. I think they were the result of natural forces. But, that is because I do not believe in a god in the first place. However, for those who DO believe, how do you reconcile your view as god as creator and shaper of the world who is all good, and the terrible things that occur that only he has control over?
  24. You may not have tolerance now, but you can certainly develop it.
  25. Actually, the bit about voiding your warranty for opening it up is not true. You only void your warranty if you BREAK the mac mini while opening it up. They don't want to pay for people being incompetent, which makes sense to me. Go ahead and get one and upgrade it yourself!
