Happy Sharing Setting up a Dynamic Address First things first sign-up for a free domain name at CODE http://www.noip.com/ this way all you have to do is give people your address instead of your IP address. Makes it easier if you have an IP that changes everytime you log on to the Internet. Dynamic DNS How-To So you think dynamic dns is right for you? Here is a step-by-step-how-to on how to setup dynamic DNS. Creating an account First you will need to create a free account. Creating an account will give you access to all of the free services including dynamic DNS and URL Redirection. Once you fill out the new user form and click submit, your password will be emailed to you. Logging In Next you will want to login to the hostname factory to setup a dynamic DNS host. Through out the site you will see the login form on the left hand side. You can also login here. Enter your email address and password and click the login button. Adding a hostname You will then be prompted by a welcome message. On the left hand side you will see the navigation items for No-IP. Click on the add a host link under the title Hostname Factory. Now you are ready to add a hostname. Now enter a hostname of your choice. Choose one of our domain names from the select button. Now enter your IP address. By default No-IP fills in the ip address you are connecting to the No-IP webserver. You can enable wildcards if you want *.yourhostname.no-ip.com to resolve to yourhostname.com(* will be any name). If you want to run a mail server or have someone else host your mail, enter the mail server name in the External Mail exchanger field(s). Now click submit. Congratulations! You have just created a hostname. Making it Dynamic If your IP is static you don't need to worry about dynamic dns. If your IP is dynamic you have two options. You can update it via the website or download an automatic update client to run on your home computer. To modify it via the website you need to login and then click the modify hostname link. Next select the hostname that you want to update. Enter the new IP address in the IP field and enter in your new. It can take up to 5 minutes for the changes to propogate. If you don't want to be bothered by updating it manually, you can download an automatic update client. No-IP provides auto update clients for Windows,Linux and Mac. Other update clients can be found on the internet (keep in mind these are not supported by No-IP). You can download the No-IP supported dynamic DNS update client. Download the client and then follow the instructions provided with the client that works on your operation system. Update client documentation is distributed with the client download.. After the client has been installed, configured, and is running have a dynamic dns hostname. Every time your IP changes the client will update your hostname. Rock and Roll Now that you have your hostname, you should put it to use. There are many ways you can put it to good use. You can set up an Web server, ftp server, a quake game server. You now become your own system administrator and are responsible for configuring these servers. rmdort: tks to richynft for info on DNS..no-ip.com
  6. Setting Up An FTP Server Using Bulletproof FTP Server Download and Install from http://www.bpftp.com/ Basics 1. Start the program. 2. Click on Setup > Main > General from the pull-down menu. 3. Enter your Server Name into the Server Name box. Under Connection set the “Max number of users" to any number. This is the limit as to how many users can be on your sever at any time. 4. Click on the Options tab of that same panel (on the side). 5. Look at the bottom, under IP Options. Put a check in the box Refuse Multiple Connections from the same IP. This will prevent one person from blocking your FTP to others. 6. Also put a check in the Blocked Banned IP (instead of notifying client). VERY IMPORTANT! If somebody decides to Hammer (attempt to login numerous times VERY quickly) your server/computer may CRASH if you don't enable this. 7. Click on the Advanced tab. 8. At the bottom again look at the Hammering Area. 9. Enable Anti-Hammer and Do Not Reply to People Hammering. Set it for the following: Block IP 120 min if 5 connections in 60 sec. You can set this at whatever you want to but that is pretty much a standard Click 'OK'. Adding Users 11. Setup > User Accounts form pull-down menu. 12. Right Click in the empty User Accounts area on the right: choose Add 13. Enter account name. (ie: logon name) 14. In the Access rights box Right Click: choose Add. 15. Browse until you find the directory (folder) you want to share. In the right column you will see a bunch of checkboxes. Put a check in the following ones: Read, Write, Append, Make, List, and +Subdirs. Press select. 16. Enter a password for your new FTP account. 17. Click on Miscellaneous in the left column. Make sure Enable Account is selected. Enable Max Number of Users set it to a number other than zero. 1 for a personal account and more that one for a group account. Enable Max. no. of connects per IP set it at 1. 18. Under Files enable show relative path this is a security issue. A FTP client will now not be able to see the ENTIRE path of the FTP. It will only see the path from the main directory. Hide hidden flies as well. Put a tick in both of these. Advanced: You don't need to do any of this stuff, but It will help tweak your server and help you maintain order on it. All of the following will be broken down into small little areas that will tell you how to do one thing at a time. Changing the Port The default port is always 21, but you can change this. Many ISPs will routinely do a scan of its own users to find a ftp server, also when people scan for pubs they may scan your IP, thus finding your FTP Server. If you do decide to change it many I suggest that you make the port over 10,000. 1. Setup > Main > General 2. In the Connection area is a setting labeled Listen on Port Number: 3. Make it any number you want. That will be your port number. 4. Click OK' Making an 'Upload Only' or 'Download Only' FTP Server. This is for the entire SERVER, not just a user. 1. Setup > Main > Advanced 2. In the advanced window you will have the following options: uploads and downloads, downloads only, and uploads only. By default upload and download will be checked. Change it to whatever you want. 3. Click 'OK’

  16. this tutorial shows how to set up IIS on windows XP.. IIS is not installed by default on Windows XP Professional. You will need to install it & will need your Windows XP setup CD for this process. Go to the Control Panel and select Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs, click on the Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left panel. The Windows Components Wizard will appear. Check Internet Information Services (IIS) and click on Details. This is all of the functionality being installed. Check the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service so you can gain experience with it. Click OK. Click Next. After this it better to update the service using windows update... Then Open the Control Panel and double-click on Administrative Tools. You have a new icon there labeled Internet Information Services. Double click and open it. u will see something similar to the screenshot Right-click on Web Sites and choose Properties. Here you can set the properties for all of the websites. ISAPI Filters ISAPI Filters are functions in IIS where documents are passed through before being served to the web. For example, a document is passed through the Compression filtered and compressed before being served. You can change the order documents are processed through the filters or Add new ones. Typically, you do not need to alter the settings on this tab. The Home Directory tab contains the default rights for directories and also allows you to change settings for your web “applications.” If you click on the Configuration button, you will see the Application Configuration. This allows you to change extensions which are run through certain application DLLs. For example, ASP files are run by ASP.DLL which processes the commands and scripting contained in it. HTTP Headers contains the header information sent from the server to the web browser. You can control content expiration from here – forcing browsers to request web pages if they're expired. You can change header information sent, Content Rating, or the MIME map – which files are handled by what application. The Web Site Identification section allows you to assign an IP address for the Web Server to serve pages on. Click on the advanced TAB and click on ADD Here you can specify Host Header Names that IIS will listen for. Again, if you had the Server version you can specify multiple websites to listen on one IP address but then enter different Host Header Names to separate your websites out. This should contain http://www.freebackgrounds.com and yoururl.com to catch people not using www. Since your IIS server will only serve up one website, it's optional to enter this information. Any other INFo on setting up IIS.. PM me or post..
