  1. hm, you're getting it wrongyou have to make a php page, for example index.phpand then in that file, you type for exampleif (isset(news) && news==show){ if (id==1){ include("pagex.html"); } if (id==2) ... if (id==256){ include ("pagey.html");}something like this. you could replace the huuuuuge amount of 'if's' by using a table in a mysql database that says which id refers to which url.and then do something likemysql_query("select name from pages where id=".*_GET['id']);and then you have the name of the page. all you have to do now is import it.
  2. 1) you don't want to reinstall your system.--> i guess partition magic is THE tool then. you don't lose your files,;..2) you have nothing on your hdd that you haven't backed up.go for a total format and take the windows xp setup cd. before installing divide your drive in partitions.i'm currently using 4 partitions:1 windows partition, 10gig, for windows & installed software1 linux partition, just the os1 linux swap1 fat filesystem, that i can access and modify from both linux & windows, that contains all my documents, installation files, music,...
  3. i believe in a combination of physical powers and a lot of coïncidence rather than in a god or a power that controls it all.things that i wonder about: how far does the universe reach. and what's outside of the universe? is the universe like a globe on the night closet of some giant creature? hehe. we think we're rather big, but that's because we compare it with other creatures in this universe. i guess we'll never know. oh well, it's cool to think about it
  4. it's cool, really. i'm not really a manga-freak or somethink like that. i liked "spirited away" though! a lot! and "ghost in a shell"the only think i like a little less about your drawing are the pale colours, but i guess that was the intention as it's a very calm & peacefull drawing
  5. i got here by one of those freewebhosts.com kinda site. don't exactly remember which one anymore. the fact that one needs to do 50 good posts before you get hosting makes sure that you don't get a lot of those guys that need hosting fast, though i kinda was one of them when i came here, hehe. i think the 50 posts & stay active thing is good. you help others and learn something yourself. about the post spamming: i'm willing to moderate a part of the forum if necessary. you know, delete spam and stuff. i think doing that takes a lot of your time which you could spend on ameliorating your hosting services. unfortunalty, i don't have that much of time either and i'm not online every day, but i'm willing to make some time as you've helped me a lot too... what i like about Xisto: -no disabling functions like mail, fopenconnect & stuff like that. -150mb, that's a lot of space for a website! -php, mysql,... grrrrreat! -uptime. i have an account at siteuptime.com and it confirms what you say: 99,5%. that's incredible for a free host. -no forced adds. that's just great. ps: check the bottom of http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. right bottom corner
  6. read what is said on the page i linked and the page after you submitted
  7. well, not if u use ssl connection to your proxy. on the site i gave, there are some ssl proxies. the connection with that proxy is ssl, so the info that is sent between them cannot be read.still those proxies have logs so if you'd do something very illegal, they'll have to show those logs to the fbi or whatever so they'll find you for sure.also, a simple traceroute could find you in 1 second :)but if it's just to surf at work to hotmail and other sites, ssl webproxies should do the trick. or you could use the ssh trick explained above.
  8. JS is different than javascript. javascript was made by netscape, JS by microsoft as an answer to javascript.java itself was made by sun and is a complete programming language, like vb, vb.net, c++.java is slower than vb c, for the obvious reason that it doesn't interact with the computer or os directly, but there is an extra layer between them, the java virtual machine. you can compare it to talking to someone of another country.when you know his language, you can just talk the language directlyif you don't, you have to use an extra person that translates everything for you, so it'll take more time.however, there are java compilers that will compile java into exe files that you can run without the virtual machine. those are faster, but the exe file will not work on all the computers.the coolest thing about java is that everyone, wether you are using a mac, linux, pc, solaris,... can install the java virtuall machine from java.sun.comand everybody can run your programs that you have written in java!so if you want to make a photo-editor for a mac-user, but you are on a linux machine, you could do it in java. it's the most universal programming language.there is an alternative to php & asp that uses java. it's called jsp: java servlet pages. it's a very secure & fast alternative to php & asp.net. problem is that only paid servers support it. you need a tomcat server.so, to sum it all up1) client side scripting:javascript (netscape, universal) or JScript (made by microsoft, only IE). there's also vbscript, also by msoft, only IEuse java script: easy and more universal.2) serverside scripting: jsp. very secure & fast. precompiled. for big-*bottom* companies that have their own webserver or can afford quite some money to pay for their webserver. better than php, but php has the advantage to be very cheap (free or cheap servers, easy to learn) and you'll find a lot of example code, tutorials,....so, if you have to make a choice for serverside scripting:a) you have money: 1. jsp, 2. asp.net, 3.php:) you don't: 1.php3) programming language: that's java. works on every machine in the world that has the java virtual machine installed, which is free at java.sun.com that's the big advantage: the programs you write can be used by everybody. but because of the extra layer, it's slower than other programming languages. but you can compile it for one machine, so it's faster. don't know about the speed then. i think it'll still be slower than c++ and c# and the likes
  9. http://forums.xisto.com/index.php?showtopi6&hl=irc-server search the page for irc. you'll find that irc services are not allowed.
  10. dualboot windows xp & mandrake linux 10.1 betawindows for games, downloading (emule, and soulseek) and some browsing (using firefox 1.0.1) and asp.net programming, photoshopmandrake for programming in C++, php, browsing (also firefox), ftp, pdf, gimp, office,...
  11. hey, don't give up. i'm not sure and i can't find where i read it anymore. so maybe it was another host.what you should/could do is send a service request. you can do this from your cpanel.
  12. another useful site for people that want to surf at work: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ the webproxy part is very interersting. and there's a lot of interesting stuff in the 'todo' section too: php msn messengers, pop mail checkers, gmail & hotmail checkers,... using proxies is like having all your traffic pass through an extra computer, so it does slow down the traffic. but if you use a proxy in your own country, or with a very low ping (you can test this by opening a command window and type 'ping w.x.y.z' where w.x.y.z is the ip adress of the proxy. try to find that that has a ping of less than 100ms! hiding your ip is not illegal as far as i know.
  13. gta2 suckedgta1 was supercool! i still like it a lotgta3... i was expecting the worst, but it was great.gta vice city & san andreas: just like gta3 but different places, cars,... COOL!gta rocks for sure!i'm gonna download that gta1 for my gf her computer. i tried running gta1 on it, but it was kinda bad. i didn't understand. ok, it's not a great computer (amd 2500, 256ddr ram of which 32mb is used for the shared video ram, so the vidcard sucks) but i was able to run it on a pentium I 90mhz with a 1mb videocard! thanks for the link!!!!!!!
  14. hm, i don't think we 'll ever be able to look at the past. that would imply that we build an incredible good telescope on a planet far far away, we travel there faster than light and then we take a look at the earth with it. the light takes a while to arrive there, let's say 50 years. i don't think it's possible.the ones that saw paycheck... well i think that has more chances in succeeding, even though they mix it up. they say you'd be able to see the future, but instead, you'de be able to see the pastif you bend your view around the curve of the world, you'll see yourself. but the light takes, let's say 1 minute to travel that far, so you'd see yourself one minute before you were looking. let's say you bend the light one million times around the globe, than you'de be able to see one million minutes in the past. a strong telescope would be needed indeed, and something that bends light.timetravelling... i don't think so. you'de have to reform the universe and stuff...
  15. you're still not very clear.answer these questions:-where should the usernames & pw be stored? mysql database? file?-where do the users enter their name/password? php-website, like a form? or a program they download and connects to your server?-do you have to be able to decrypt them? this is NOT neccessary to check if their password is correct. let's say you store the encrypted version of username & pw. and a user is entering his info. than all you have to do is encrypt the info he entered and then compater it with the info in your database/file-why encrypt the username? doesn't seem very handy to me.
  16. make decent & interesting posts in the 'contribute' section. the one-line posts you are making now won't do the trick. you did some good post, like the one about dvd ripping in linux. that was good to know. but a lot of them are just one-line questions. i don't think the admins will fall for that. there's a link to a guide here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ good luck.
  17. well, it's much more safe concerning security & data loss.but longhorn isn't working with winfs yet, because they had some problems during the devellopment. so it's postponed. first, they'll release longhorn, and then a year or so later, they'll release a new version with winfs filesystem. but if you already have longhorn, you'll be able to download a windows update so you can use winfs.like nfts, every file will use more space than the actual size of the file, just to store some extra properties like passwords and stuff.
  18. https://www.google.com%2Fwebmasters%2Ftools%2Fsubmit-url&followup=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fwebmasters%2Ftools%2Fsubmit-url this one's for google only. i only use that one as it's the most interesting one. most people use google anyway. there are some sites that submit your site to several search engines, but most of those are paid services
  19. well, you could go to the 'view' menu of your browser and choose 'view source'then you'll have the html, so you can fake the layout and stuff. but if you want the coding, that's impossible. they use jsp i think and the only way to get that code is by asking them but if you want it to look the same, you just have to copy the html as described above. then, in the html, you'll find some links to 'js' files and 'css' files. you have to copy those too. then, you'll have their layout. but i think it's easier to just start from scratch
  20. dude, it's insane! you're in art schooL?
  21. well, as far as i remember, irc bots & servers are forbidden. i dunno about clients. but i think it's quite probable they blocked some other ports. fsockopen works though.
  22. at the moment, there are only betas, so your friend has a beta too. and then the options are:-he has an incredible good computer-he doesn't mind about his computer getting all slow and loves the animations and decorations and stuff :)either way, i'm waiting 'till they release it for real and make my judgement then.doom3 beta was running really bad on my laptop, but the offical release runs like a charm. there's a reason why they call it beta: a lot of bad (temporary) code uses way too much resources. when they fix it, the system requirements will be lower. at least, i hope so, or i think it'll be a bad move of ms
  23. i don't want to suck up to the admins, but Xisto is the best i had up to now. i used freeprohost.com, which has 100mb but disables some functions i tried frandt, but that's one more off line than online: https://www.siteuptime.com/statistics.php?I0&&UserId=13641 lycos gives you 50mb but has a lot of adds. you can rule them out, but it's not working on every browser and slows down the loading... and Xisto. well, they care about giving you all the options. the bandwith is limited, but still pretty good to host a personal site and bigger than all of the others i mentioned. uptime is really good for a free host: https://www.siteuptime.com/statistics.php?I9&&UserId=13641 so i'll stick to Xisto. and you have to post on the forum... oh well, it's cool. you help others and sometimes you learn something yourself. it rocks!
  24. Knoppix runs from cd-rom, just imagine your cdrom all day spinning like a hardisk reading data, cdrom drives are not designed to function like that. So if you use your cdrom drive in that way of course it will be die soon. Give it a shot, download knoppix and try it, you will see. Well I'm not saying knoppix it's bad, but if you use so much, the life of your cdrom will be shorter. Greets Deivid <{POST_SNAPBACK}> hm, it's less dramatic as you think. most of the os is loaded into the ram memory, so it runs faster and it doesn't use your cdrom drive all the time. i only use it to rescue someone's system. all i need is my external harddrive and the knoppix cd: i can copy all the important info to my hdd, and then i can format his drive without worrying.
  25. hm, this has been discussed about 25 times before.to be short:asp: don't do it. it sucks.php: easy to learn, powerfull, easy to find free hostingasp.net: very powerfull, a bit harder to learn, but now you can script in C# which is much easier than vb.net in my opinion. bad thing is find a host. it'll cost you more. another bad thing is that you'll find less examples and open source projects than when using php. so you'll have to do more yourself
