  1. Intel if you didn't know already locks the multiplyer which makes overclocking not impossible, but much harder. Can't say about AMD's Athlons. I think AMD wants people to overclock their processors.Okay, so if you boards from Asus and VIA you can increase the FSB speed but that's not the true overclocking method. Its not the hardcore way. If you want to know the hardcore way you can go to Tom's Hardware Guide and look up their guide to overclocking the P4 3GHz to 5GHz.Overclocking is dangerous and can seriously damage your computer like fabius said. However, I think the companies don't care what users do with their hardware. If they damage it fine, its theirs. Nothing AMD and Intel have to worry about. Also it voids your warranty
  2. I think its a bad thing, that feature is usually reserved for mobile processors. Its bad for a desktop as it will reduce performance sometimes. You'll also get "the dust problem" I think.Anyway you can't underclock a CPU. Even if you did, it would consume the same amount of power so its useless. If you want a computer that runs cool get a Celeron or a Cyrix 3 based system. Though I highly not recommend either of them especially the Cyrix 3.If you still want a computer that consums a bit less power, you can also opt for a laptop. For example, the power supply on my sis' desktop is rated at 140W as in my laptop, it consumes only 90W.
  3. You can also try: Spybot Search and Destory (integrated update panel. Don't know of spysweeper has that) https://www.safer-networking.org/ and there's also Ad-Aware adware/spyware removal software. THough I highly recommend against it... its too slow
  4. I'm really split even though AMD's perform much better and have always performed better (on the same speed basis). And you don't have to admit anything =D having a P4 doesn't usually mean you'll love it =P.Infact I remember when the Pentium 4s came out with RDRAM... the high end Pentium III's with SDRAM performed much better
  5. maybe the files are uncompressed? Linux always used to be bigger than Windows which I find not good.I also tried Lindows... I feel that I can say its the worst Linux distro ever made.
  6. I noticed this earlier last year. My laptop was slowing down and it was getting really hot. It was so bad that it overheated and stopped working for periods of time.Well maybe it might happen to you laptop users. Take a look on your CPU fan vent on your laptop (underneath). Spot lots of dust? Get an air can and dust it out! All sides of the vent.Dust will cause heat to build more rapidly in the CPU in laptops. Since the CPU is mobile and since its getting hot fast it will work with the powersave in mind, lowering even more performance. After I got my laptop cleaned, it performed roughly 4X faster.Hope this helps you users!
  7. It is impossible to cool a processor all on its own without physical intervention with the exception of some processors like Transmeta's Crusoe processor and the C3 Cyrix III (yuck!) because they are designed to be quiet and to have low heat dissipation in mind.Other than without a Nitrogen cooler/Water cooler/faster heatsink its impossible.
  8. Intel's approach is much better as it is showing temperature monitoring. It will try and prevent the frying of the motherboard... can't say too much about the AMD one though.AMDs.. i'm not too sure on the new 64's and their architecture. I do now the Athlon's architecture though. It has 10 superpipelines vs Intel's 20 hyper pipelines in their Pentium 4.The advantages of having 10 pipes is that it will make the processor very efficient. When it comes to misprediciton the Athlon can flush, reload much more quicker than the Pentium 4 can because its pipelines are shorter and eaisier to fill. With this comes an inherit disadvantage- Athlons will take a long time for them to be clocked higher. Not with the Pentium 4 though, since it has more pipelines it can be clocked really fast. You see Tom's hardware guide? They OC'd a P4 3GHz to 5GHz! can't do that with an Athlon!
  9. Actually RedHat is now an enterprise only Operating System. If you want to use it personally they changed RedHat personal to Fedora Linux. You should download that instead. Its a hefty 2.1 gigs btw
  10. Okay, this little guide will show you how to: 1) Lock down your computer (secure it) 2) Possibly make it even faster. ------------------------------------------------- Since the days of the web, in 2000 your computer would be attacked within a good 15 to 30 minutes. Nowadays its merely 15 seconds and BAM! Your computer has been hit by the sasser worm and all kinds of gunk and worms from the internet. Why did I write this guide? Well locking down computers is an important aspect of daily computing. Would you like your computer participating in the next DoS (Denial of Service) attack where it could bring down major websites? Would you like your computer to be in control of a hacker? I think not... There are several ways a computer can get very unstable. These causes could be: 1) Spyware/Adware downloaded onto your computer without your knowledge (or you didn't know it). These programs for example are adware: KaZaa, Download Accelerator Plus and these programs for example are spyware: Gator, GoZilla! The difference between spyware and adware is that spyware is a program that intently does harmful things to your computer. They may steal your personal information and transmit it back to a server for example. To remove spyware I would highly recommend getting an adware/spyware removal utility. ALTHOUGH MCAFEE ANTI VIRUS AND SYMANTEC ANTI VIRUS CLAIM TO REMOVE SPYWARE, THEY ARE NOT THAT EFFECTIVE YET. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO BE USED FOR SPYWARE/ADWARE REMOVAL https://www.safer-networking.org/ '> https://www.safer-networking.org/ Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 is the best freeware adware/spyware removal tool I have seen on the net. Download it and follow the easy to use instructions. And get rid of that spyware! NOTE: Some programs may not work after removing adware/spyware. (Who ever said anything was free??) 2) Fragmentation on your computer Fragmentation happens. Files are not stored contigously on the Hard Disk. They are placed EVERYWHERE on the hard drive. The File Allocation System determines how many chunks and their sizes will be on a HDD. For example on a 40GB FAT32 HDD the cluster size would be 32KB whereas a 40GB NTFS HDD the cluster size would be 4KB. NTFS will allow for better efficent use of space, however it is considerably slow compared to FAT32 if your HDD is slow. Let's say you had a 32KB file for example. For NTFS, It would need to divide the 32KB into 4KB chunks, so it would be 8, 4KB chunks. FAT32 will only need 1 32KB chunk. Reading files in this case would be significantly faster. However then there is efficiency of space. If there was a 4KB file, it would take only 1 4KB chunk. Whereas on FAT32 it would still take up 1 32KB chunk. Another 32KB chunk will be used when the file goes over the 32KB size. Okay anyway, now think of fragmentation like this. You have a file cabinet filled with folders (folders of course) and paper (files). You take a folder out, read the paper and put it back in anywhere you liked it. out of order. Now do this repeatedly and you'll get a very disorganized folder. Nothing is alpabetical and it will take a very long time to find the folder you want. This is what's happening on the HDD every day and its impossible to eliminate. BUT it is possible to reduce! Do not use the Windows Defragmenter. It is slow and hardly does anything. I highly recommend this defragmenter: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ https://l''>https://l'>http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ https://l Diskeeper Lite is based on the Diskeeper 7 defragmenter. It contains the DK7 defrag core tech without the fancy stuff like automatic defragging and such. but it does get the job done very well. 3) Errors on your disk. Time to time your compy will freeze and you'll have to do a "cold boot". Now if you do this frequently, you'll start to get a LOT of write errors on your disk. Your HDD, OS, CPU will need to take time trying to interpret the rather damaged file. Running disk check will correct the errors and thus no need or the computer to think waht the file says everytime! Start> Run> C:\ > Right Click> Click on Properties> Tools> Error-Checking> Check Now and restart your computer after it says it'll need to reboot in order to check. Locking down your computer --------------------------------- Firewalls There are two main types of firewalls out there for the hoome user. The more practical and cheap to deploy assuming you update your software regularly software firewall and the hardware firewall which I will explain in a moment what it does. Software firewalls give users more control over programs and are VERY flexible. You can specify which ports to open or block as you please and you can adjust a program's internet permission if it can send data or if it can recieve data or both. The downside is that software maintenance is a must like Anti-Virus programs and they are rather annoying. Hardware Firewalls or "routers" as they are often called are simple. They hide every computer port. How? The Router takes control of your IP's assigned IP. The router assigns an independant IP for each computer. You can call it a "mini server" if you'd like. Anyway, the thing is, a router is NOT a computer!!! therefore it technically does NOT have any ports! Any attack assigned to the router will fail because it does not have a operating system. Software firewalls, a good free one is Zone Alarm Basic. You can get it at http://www.zonealarm.com/ What exactly does a firewall do? A firewall essentially hides all ports on your computer so it looks as if your computer is not online. When a ping gets requested, the computer with a firewall will not respond, indicating a dead end for the hacker. So how are programs able to send and recieve data? Firewalls allow certain programs access. If the request on the incoming packet indicates a program from your computer requested the data, the packet is let in. Anti-Virus ----------- AV programs are essential for computers these days. However please do remember that an Anti Virus program is only good as how updated it is. If its outdated (without the latest definitions) it will not be able to detect and get rid of new viruses. Therefore making it useless. They will block certain trojans and most viruses from running. Modern Anti Virus programs have a module in memory that scans a program for infection before it is ran. If the program is found to be infected, you will be denied access to the program from spreading further infection. Good AntiVirus programs are: McAfee Anti-Virus, Symantec Antivirus, and Sophos Antivirus from what i've seen. There are free AV programs out there. The only one I know of is AVG Free-Edition (and yes there are free updates for it ) I do not know its effectiveness is however. And The AVG free edition is ALWAYS the last iteration of the AVG's AntiVirus program. Downloading Guide ---------------------- When you download software, just skin through the EULA and check to see the privacy statement of the program. Read it carefully! some programs actually do state they transmit some personaly identifiable information to servers! these programs include such as Gator, GoZilla!, and Download Accelerator plus. Also, remember nothing is ever free unless if its really free (like charityware or something).
  11. I'll have to go with the evil empire on this one.Windows- I'm more used to the GUI i've used since Windows 95. It's easy to use and clutter free compared to Linux's taskbar.People say Linux is much more secure than Microsoft. The fact is that Windows has twice as less holes than Linux. The only reason why M$'s Windows is attacked often is because 95% of the ppl use it. Linux is full of holes. And of course its basically the industry's main operating system. Nearly everyone uses some sort of Windows. Of course, it gets different for servers and workstations which seemed to be geared more towards Apple and Linux/Unix.
  12. Actually three main factors apply; CPU, RAM, and Hard Disk Drive.HDD- Remember, this thing LOADs your windows. When things load too slowly, check to see if your HDD is a slug.RAM- RAM does NOT HELP for loading times (in some cases, not all). For example loading FarCry. Loading depends heavily on how fast your HDD can run. RAM allows you to have how much data on physical RAM.CPU- Actually... CPUs are pretty fast these days. And don't forget spyware/adware. They slow your computer down tremendously. It also can be a trojan or a virus in your compouter
  13. If you have 10 computers networked, I think it would be much eaisier maintaining a server with Windows Server 2003 and have all the clients be Windows XP Professional. But since its linux...I do not think though it is a good idea to use a free telnet client though for your employees to use.
  14. 1) Get a pop-up blocker. In Windows XP Service Pack 2, there is an integrated pop-up blocker with Internet Exploder. However you may not have SP2. In that case I highly recommend you download and get the Google Toolbar. It has a pop-up blocker built in. 2) Get a Spyware/Adware Removal utility. https://www.safer-networking.org/ Spybot search and destroy is the best i've seen 3) Get a firewall (to prevent your computer from being intruded by hackers) Although SP1 and SP2 both have firewalls, getting a discrete firewall is a better solution. http://www.zonealarm.com/ Zone Alarm provides a good, free firewall. (Zone Alarm Basic)
  15. Doom III's engine is cool I guess. The lighting and bump-mapping are used very heavily to create a realistic effect. However when it comes to polys per model, its about evenly matched with Half Life 2's Source Engine
  16. I'm not... The Sims is always fun when you haven't played it for a long time but it gets rather boring after doing it for 30 minutes to an hour for me.Also I think times flies VERY fast with the sims... even more than playing FPSs.
