I have a wireless router which has its own hardware firewall running.I also have zone alarm running on my pc as an added precaution.I use AVG free for virus detection , i used to use Norton and it said i was clean , but when i scanned with AVG free it found a virus and cleaned it.

Winrar is better becuase it can open all the different types of compressed files including zip files.From my experience the majority of compressed files that i have downloaded have been rars.

I got fedup with popups on my pc .... even though i had popup stopper software running.I have now switched from IE6 to mozilla and i have not had a single popup in the past 3 months.There have been a couple of websites that didnt function correctly with mozilla , so i just switched to IE6 to view these sites. -
I gave up playing games on my pc long ago as it was too expensive and problematic.With the lastest game i never seemed to have enough ram or my graphics card was unsuitable , etc.So i now have an xbox and a ps2 and life is much easier ... justs takes a little longer to load the game.

We have thousands of computers at work and they are all on 24/7 .... with no probs.The main thing to watch out for is that the processor fan can get clogged up with dust , it needs to be cleaned out more regularly if the pc is on 24/7.Another thing is screen burn in ... make sure you have a screen saver on.

Mine was an Amstrad CPC64 .... no hdd , fdd or mouse.Had to load programs from tape .... took about 20 mins to load a naff game.I used it to teach myself BASIC.

The beta looks like one to avoid for the moment.It wouldnt complete the install on my pc and a friend of mine is having no end of problems with it .... hardware not working and lockups galore.

Do you have another hdd that you can put in your computer.If so you can boot from that with your old hdd as a slave drive.You can then copy off whatever files you need from your old drive.Then you can format your old drive.
