So up to now, although all of us recognize that PERL is very powerful, we stick to php... interesting... The reason I brought this topic up is because on one of my old jobs we were working with perl in a very intense fashion (meaning that we used PERL for almost anything).A little further in the past, I developed my thesis using mainly in php, and I found it very powerful and easy to use...Yet, as I spoke to one of my friends (old college teacher and debian lover/freak) he told me "PERL is the path to the future", so that made me think 'Is it? Are we at the door (can't think of a better english to describe the moment) of a major web developing change?'. Of course we're at the doors of a major standalone software developing revolution, since with the new multi-core processors and the fast evolution of High Performance computing, standalone software as we know it (at least I do) which is linear and not threaded is fastly dying to give path to a full set of techniques which involve threads and concurrence as our main thought when designing. But, does this apply to web development? are we going to have to abandon good old php because PERL is more efficient and secure????As you may notice these are a big bunch of crazy thought of a drowzy/sleepy programmer, but I really wish to know if I'm alone on this thoughts... Is php going to give way to PERL, or the other way around? or do you think they'll both continue advancing steadily for us to keep using them as we have always done? Please excuse me if I don't make any sense, or share your opinions if I do (actually you have more reasons to share your opinions if I don't make any sense). Either way, good luck to all, and I'll see you around...

Ok, so I've heard a lot of both languages, I've used php and I was learning Perl a while ago...If you had to choose between these 2 languages to develop a website, which one would you use and why?I'm attaching a poll in this message please vote

Alright, I'm buying a new computer and I'm planing to use my old one as an exclusive Unix based PC, mostly to learn and practice, but to implement a couple of servers as well (mostly a webserver, a mailserver and fileserver). So I need your opinion, which of these 2 great OSs should I give a try first?

I have to agree that it looks awesome, but, I might stick to 2D for a while, because not only I don't really have that much computer power right now, but, even if 3D is nicer, 2D might be more efficient to work. Of course that, I can't have a final word until I've actually tried this 3D thing

With all due respect, I don't think it makes any sense to diminish points down to 3 when you get aproved, I mean, what if (like me) I 'bought' the small package because (thinking on the whole community scope) I didn't want to create an unnecesary overload on the system... so I get punished for not asking for the big plan one time???? to be honest that doesn't make any sense to me... it's like if I have a phone company and then I say: you can buy this cheap cell, or this expensive one... if you buy the more expensive one then you'll overload my free service sending a lot of sms and pictures, but that's ok with me, because either or, I'm taking all your 'money' out of yor account.I don't maybe I'm crazy or just cheap, but, when some says: "here, this thing costs X", it must cost X wheter you have 5 times X in your pocket...

So basically, in order to have a high rank on a search engine one must have:1.- meta keywords on the header of the main page (btw, do you need them in all pages or just on the main)2- be linked to, from websites that have a major amount of visitors and are consider BIG.Is that right? is there any other considerations that a webmaster should keep in mind? and then what does that module on cpanel (the one that says submit to search engines) do then? can you submit, then at some point if your site change its scope resubmit and so on???

Secret Behind Your Nick/User Names Where did they come from?
rantsh replied to szupie's topic in Introductions
My nickname was originated similarly to tsupie's.I was looking for a nickname/login name for hotmail and my real name is Roderick Anthony Smith Hung, and I spent a couple of hours looking for an acronym or a way to combine the name and avoid any kind of "roderick07" kind of thing, so after I spent a few hours trying I said to myself how about "roansmhu" gave a real thought and decided to better keep trying, so said to myself how 'bout I keep just the initial of all my names and a couple of letters from any other name? so posibble combinations were "roash" (which I think it exists), "ransh", "rasmh", and "rashu"(which i think it exists too). I liked ransh, but when i wrote it in the field I wrote rantsh instead... and so, this is my nickname for everything now... -

thanks for the help tansqrx, I really appreciate the focus you've given me through your input.Let me share a little bit of my background so everyone will know why I could never do it myself.I come from a spanish speaking latin country (Venezuela) which as you may know is very poor (well the people is poor, the country is very rich and could have a lot of potencial). Thus, I was raised on a spanish environment, I only got a dial-up connection when I was in the middle of my college studies and DSL by the end of it. As I mentioned before, I have a bachelor's degree in computer engineering, yet it's funny, you see... computer security was (on that time) a big taboo in my university, so when I was required to choose for a thesis I got 4 subjects rejected: "Viruses, Why and how they're produced, and their detection", "Creation of an effective and intelligent IDS using AI technology", "Cyber-Attack detection, prevention and contraattack", "WEP Flaws and improvement". As you may know, a thesis is the perfect chance to define your specialty field, but for some reason the directives of my university thought that it was not going to be well seen the fact that one of their student was talking and/or developing viruses, or hacking systems... So instead they assigned me a subject to develop an intranet software for the school... PATHETIC... And this was not 10 or 20 years ago... this was 1 and a half years ago. There are other reasons why I couldn't study to be my true self, for instance, as a rule I had to learn english, even writing this post has already took me 15 minutes, then there's the books you have need to buy in order to learn the very basic stuff... Those books you suggested (for instance) are not found in any bookstore in Venezuela, the reason: $$$. You see, the "Cryptography and Network Security: Principles and Practice (3rd Edition) by Williams Stallings" costs 76.95USD, just for the record this about half the mothly salary I was earning as an engineer in venezuela. Because I have moved from Venezuela, and I had got new, better career opportunitites, I decided to ask through this forum just for a tip on where to start, thanks to you and yungblood at least I have a better perspective of what to do now.Hopefully, I'll have the chance to achieve my master's degree in Information Security, and (because dreaming is still free) maybe, just maybe become one of the great ones, if not, then I'll be satisfied with the knowledge I had achieved on the way. In any case for the rest of you who are reading this post, the purpouse of this post is not to make up an excuse of why I haven't ever done what's needed, or, to create pity in others so they'll help me out. And NO I don't anyone telling me ESPECIFICALLY what to do, all I want to know is where to start, I know the rule of "don't ask, just do it". I've been reading on this subject for a while now, and FYI, I don't disagree with your rule, but right now I'm like a child without any guidance, so I'm not looking for a "Go here, do that" reply, that was never my intention... All I'm asking is "where's start/go point"In any case, all your inputs are welcome, and thanks again to tansqrx and yungblood for their very valuable opinions, time and guidance... -

mmm... I'm sorry kiddo, I do not intend to attack anyone or threathen the board or whatever, I was just curious of the hacking subject. To be honest I don't care if anyone laughs at me or not, actually I couldn't care less.. I'm above that kind of situation... Now, thanks for the "idio" and "retard" adjectives, if it wanting to learn something makes me an idiot, then I'm the major idiot in the world, since I want to learn everything that there's to learn... Either way, I appreciate your input... -
Winamp, although I find the lastests versions a little heavy, I think it has much more quality than WMP, besides it's way more customizable and easy to use.

So I guess it's safe to conclude that ebay has THE weirdest stuff on the internet. hehehe

rantsh replied to m3ch4's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Linux is the way to go, I suggest Debian, it's just the way go my friend. If you want to stick to the windows world, well, then I suggest you get your hands on a windows 98 SE, then of all the windoz you could install in a P3 this is probably the best one. -

Believe me when I understand this rule, I appreciate what you have told me because it's actually what I wanted, I did not want anyone to tell me how to do stuff, but where to begin looking for (as you said point in the right direction). Now, it's not my intention to hack anyone else, but I'm just craving for the knowledge... sadfully I don't have the skills(yet) to accomplish this mission. Actually one of the things I really suck, and want to get better is at cryptography (and I mean There's advanced, basic. stupid and then there's me). I've really tried and practiced a lot, but it costs me to even decrypt one of those newspaper game... On the code reading thing, well I do have some skills in that area. but if there's lack of knowledge on the basics, well you may know all the code... but... Either way, I really appreciate your recomendations and guidance. I wish you luck and I'll keep going on with my research. REALLY... THANKS, see you around (if you ever are by southamerica or the caribbean)... -
Hmmm... I hate to say it but in the security area I have to admit my "n00bness". I've always had an interest in this subject but never really had the chance to study or practice to become a hacker. Now, all I'm asking is a little share of your wisdom on how a regular computer joe (like me) could develop his/her cryptographer/decrypter/hacking skills.Notice that I'm not asking for a big bunch of your time and/or effort. All I ask for is a little guidance on where to start. Remember "there's a big difference between knowing the path and walking the path".So, if I may say so... HELP ME BECOME A HACKER PLEASE!!!! ( )Either way, I'm pretty sure I'm not alone, there may quite a few who are afraid to ask so they won't seem stupid in the eyes of other people. Like me, they have probably read a million tutorials that are more confusing than helpful; which is what brings me to this last resort of begging for useful guidance that's actually useful!!!I thank you all for your time either in advance, and hope I hear from you soon... (YES YOU! THE REAL HACKER WHO'S READING THIS NOW)

What Do You Use For Web Programming? Frontpage, Notepad, etc.
rantsh replied to Airlub's topic in Websites and Web Designing
There are 2 main tools I use to develop websites, Dreamweaver MX 2004 and UltraEdit 32. I find the latter to be a GREAT text/code editor. That of course is on the windows world, then when I'm on Linux, I tend to use some of the editors that are included (I'm trying to remember the name of the one I use on the graphical interface... but for some reason the name doesn't come to mi mind right now), yet, there's nothing like the good old VI ... -
It's quite long, I have a P4 1.6 Ghz laptop, with 256 MB, No HT or any fancy features on my processor, it's from the first ones that came out... takes about 1 minute to boot Windows XP home and all its crap (and other services like Norton Antivirus). On the same laptop I had another hard drive, and during the dying period of this drive it was quite slow, sometimes it took about 5 or even 10 minutes to boot (Yep it was that bad)On a second thought, you might be under the painful effects of a virus, spyware or just too many services running.

Well, I prefer PC games, because as stated before by many of you they are simply better.Even so, I prefer yo have a console since it's cheaper than having a whole computer system just to play. Then again, on the old days I played around 10 hours a day and that worked out well for me, but now that I just play to release stress, maybe 5 hours a week... then I'll probably go back to PC. Who knows...I think the big achievement of consoles over PC is the ability to go Multiplayer with only one system and one license of the game. Finally, I still give my vote for consoles...

If You Have Enough $$$, PC Or Laptop ? And Why ?
rantsh replied to iGuest's topic in Hardware Workshop
Depending on the kind of use and lifestyle that you have you may choose one or another, for instance, if you travel a lot or if you need to have your data with you when not at home or office, then obviously a laptop would be better, Now, in many other aspects a desktop is better, because you can upgrade it easier, and the spare parts are cheaper. I personally prefer desktops. -
Firefox Or Internet Explorer that is the question...
rantsh replied to Judman's topic in The Internet
Firefox ALL THE WAY. I find IE to be very inefficient and you catch more spyware and pop-ups with it.So I'll vote for Firefox. -
I must say I like your site, I think it's very well structured, yet there are 2 tiny observations:1.- You'd probably like to put some javascript or something so the actual link's address is not shown on the status bar.2.- On the webshop, I notice you abandon your site and go to cafexpress.com, do I make sense if I suggest you better, open a new browser window with for this link OR go to a framed page where you keep your logo and navigation bar and show the cafexpress section below, although this would yacky!. Maybe (I don't know what your plan is) it'd be better to you to display your stuff on a page designed by you and then maybe redirect your costumer to paypal or something like that.Either way, great job, I have to admit it looks pretty nice... I hope mine gets to look that good at some point... I wish you luck
