Do You Think The Footer In A Website Is Important?

Recommended Posts

hi all,i have this idea about FOOTERS in websites, and decided to share it with you, to see who agree with me and who is not.my idea is, the footer is one of the important parts of any website. it contains the copyrights, the designer name or the owner name, more info about your website and about you, and add to all these it could portray the designer himself. how?as a designer, ?i always try to make the sites i ?make to be suitable for both: me and the reader, i always put that in mind when i choose?colors, background, effects. but the only area that i could do whatever i want in and portray my personality is the FOOTER.why? because there, whatever i did, i won't affect the readers, in the contrary, i may take their attention if i made a unique design for the footer.most of the readers reach the bottom of the page and think there are nothing impressive more, well, i want to shock them their and give them a special thing to look at. this is my idea about footer, and this is why i spend a long time to find a unique design for it. and this is why i check the footer of every website i visit. so anyone here agree with me?

I believe the importance of a website's footer is dependent on the website itself. For example, my website doesn't have a footer. But does it need a footer? It is understandable to have a footer with your ''finger print'' if the design was meant to be shared across many websites (e.g. WordPress themes). It is also understandable if your website has many sections and a small site map on the bottom of each page makes other areas more accessible, especially if an interested reader will eventually find themselves at the bottom of each page (due to actively reading the content on the website). Likewise, it is understandable if your website is sponsored by many. But for a website as simple as mine? I don't think one is needed. I also find copyright to be a bit over rated, and often see no need to bother with its symbols.

likje true fusion said, i am not too keen on putting copyrights in footers as everything now a days is copywrited without the symbol. the footer is a place that people rarely see. i think a footer is important though none the less. we can be business like and professional at the top and middle of the page where our website gets the most exposure. the footer should be the exception. the footer should be personal and should tell a little bit about the person...i think the visitors will appreciate the website more with a good personal footer.....

in general, i agree with you that adding a footer is depending on the site itself. but i still thinking it  is all about a "touch of art" which gives your site a special look, in spite of what it contains.

about your site truefusion, i think you are right, it is like an official site or a reference for Christian, so maybe no need for a footer, but if it was mine i will add a wide footer contains a big image for Jesus Christ and some quotes from the bible  :).

I think the footer, although not important for all sites, gives a completed look to the site. So I would definitely include a footer in my site, even if it doesn't have much in it and contains just a single line. And even if no one looks at it I would still be satisfied that it adds a finishing touch to my site :)

I really dislike footers and usually remove them from my sites. I do not really know how to explain it but I just feel as if they are in the way (although I've never had a website that was not solely for a hobby -- I can see their uses for companies as they put important links there that the average reader would not need but advertisers and such would).I've noticed most of you seem to think the footers are good though. Do you think the lack of them causes any negative attention to be brought to the site? And what all should be on them?

you dislike footers??? :o
what? are you a footer hater? :)

i really love footers and think they are a very important part of the design rpgsearcherz. i really wonder why you don't like footer?
they are the most personal part that could connect you to the reader. there, you could show yourself as a designer, or a developer, you could add an important link, you could add icons or anything you want without affecting your site.

i never leave a site before scrolling down to the bottom to see its footer and if i didn't find a one i really disappointed.

next time you make a site, send me to create a special footer for you ;) , and i am sure you will change your mind :) .

lol, I'll have to take you up on that offer. I just usually ignore them probably because they are almost always filled with links. Generally when I go to a site it's because they had information I needed -- not so I can be dragged elsewhere.

It's probably more of a personal problem than anything.

hmmm, so it seems you are not interested in designs or graphics of websites, unlike me. i always want to know how did they do this and that and what they used :) .

anyway, my offer still on, any time you want just pm me ;) .

It depends on website theme and what you want to do with it. Community websites have a lot of content or the link to the content which is internal. I'm of opinion that backlink to your own site or copyright and links are supposed to be there for average blog. You can even place widgets which are small in footer. It's only important if you want recurring code or content there. Some people (including myself) keep analytics code & internal links at the bottom of the page. Some people rarely scroll to bottom that's why i prefer to keep important stuff above the fold and less important reader stuff at the footer.

A footer at the end of a page is like the full-stop after a sentence. Just like a header is the capitalisation of the first word at the start of a sentence.

I think that a page looks incomplete without a footer. However, this depends on the nature of the page. If it is just a splash page with a sitemap, it would not need a footer. But if it is a content based page, it should definitely have a footer with at least these few things:

link to home page

link to about page

link to privacy policy page (if applicable)

link to contact page

link to sign in or register page (should be in the header too)

name of the site you are on

Some of these may not be applicable for personal sites though

Back in the day footers were the cannon fodder of website design, but in recent years footer design has become something of an enigma. I have seen quite a few websites where designers go beyond a boring old footer either through graphic design or the code itself. You see this mostly in blog websites but check this link out from smashingmagazine.com on how designers work with their footers.
