Xp: Improve Performance

To improve performance of XP do this: Right click my computer, properties, Advanced, Performance and select "Adjust for best performance". Click OK. Remember, this will remove some visual effects. If you want that XP style UI (the round buttons and blue taskbar), Keep "Use Visual Styles on windows and buttons" Cheked in the visual effects list.

Or, just ajust your virtual memory size. Change the Minimum value and maximum value to at least 500 MB.

good suggestion....i personally would rather see the nice clean XP style ....thats why i hate windows millenium and lower

You can also defrag the hard disk to try to free up a bit of wasted space. this can also help with the performance(not always)

Defragging you hard drive does not "free up wasted space". All it does is arrange the file clusters neatly (placing all the clusters for the same file together). It improve performance of the hard drive by saving the hard drive from going all over the drive plates to find all the clusters (parts) of a file.

Antoher good options, is to avoid loading of applications at startup that u don't use.Loading these applications will make windows boot time longer. And also performance will be less.So use the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) to avoi those applications.Just go Start -> Run -> msconfigAnd go to the last tab StartEach line is a programa that loads when you start windowsRemove each one you know you don't useBut be carefull, some fot hese are needed by windws as drivers, or for some apps to work properly. The best way to improve windows performance is to fomrat the drive and install something else...but I digress...Keep your themes and whatnot simple, turn off anything that makes windows less ugly, dont fill your HD to the breaking point, run spyware/adware/virus removal tools regularly, do the msconfig thang to kill useless programs from starting upBasically anything to keep your ram clean, your system running as it was meant to, etc will boost performance. Don't install **** 24/7 off websites you've never heard of, and don't **** with your registry unless you know what you are doing.

Casanova, all the earlier suggestions mentioned above are good for optimizing the performance. My suggestion is to get another 256mb or maybe even 512mb of ram if you have Windows XP. You should see some slight improvement especially when opening more programs.

Another easy way to save on system resources is to open up Quick Launch (right click the bar at the bottom of the screen (the one that's blue by default) and hover over toolbars and then click "Quick Launch". Drag all your essential icons into it, then right click an empty space on your desktop and hover over "Arrange Icons by" and then click "Show Desktop Icons". Now you compy won't waste time drawing your icons and all your essential program shortcuts are in one easy place. And, as a side bonus, your neato-keen desktop wallpaper isn't obstructed!

I must say, the idea of wiping the hard disk and installing something else sure would help more than any of those...
