Darkwolf11235 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2006 I heard that if you placed mentos into a bottle of diet coke it would create a fountain effect. When I tried this I got covered in coke because of the speed of the reaction. Luckily no sugar means it does attract as many bugs. After this I wondered for a while what exactly is the chemical reaction that takes place between a mentos mint and diet coke. If anyone knows please post. It would be interesting if this only worked with diet coke. One more thing, I have also heard that a group of people created a video with several hundred of these "fountains" going off in a specific order to create a very unique affect. If anyone knows were this can be found please post that as well.
austiniskoge 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2006 That's really cool. I've never heard of that...Of course, Googling it would probably just turn up 1,987,372,387,983 "Pop Rocks and Coke" hits. But I'll try to find something.
austiniskoge 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2006 Ok, I just found a blog and one of the entries was about this. This was one of the comments. JayCee January 19, 2006 12:44 PM Here is a write up from a guy named Steve Spangler on the subject:As you probably know, soda pop is basically sugar (or diet sweetener), flavoring, water and preservatives. The thing that makes soda bubbly is invisible carbon dioxide gas, which is pumped into bottles at the bottling factory using tons of pressure. Water molecules, which are super attracted to each other, cling together and surround the tiny bubbles of gas in the liquid. The bond they form is called surface tension. Surface tension is measured by the amount of energy it takes to break the clinging water molecules apart. It takes a lot of energy! Until you open the bottle and pour a glass of soda, the gas mostly stays suspended in the liquid and cannot expand to form more bubbles, which gases naturally do.If you shake the bottle and then open it, the gas is released from the protective hold of the water molecules and escapes with a whoosh, taking some of the soda along with it. When you add Mentos to the mix, get ready for an incredible explosive reaction--so explosive that the entire bottle is sometimes emptied of liquid. Why?Mentos contain sugar, glucose syrup (more sugar), hydrogenated coconut oil, starch, gum arabic, an emulsifier and natural flavor. The gum arabic which makes Mentos chewy, cause the surface tension of the water molecules to break even more easily, releasing more carbon dioxide gas. This effect is enhanced by the fact that, as the candy dissolves, it forms nucleation sites -- tiny pits on the surface of the mint where more carbon dioxide bubbles can form. When all this gas is released, it thrusts the entire contents of the bottle skyward, in an incredible soda blast. Hopefully you've decided to use diet soda or you may be running for the shower! And I found an amazing video here.Yeah, this is definitely fun stuff. I'm not sure if I understand the science behind it though. That quote seems like it's not quite accurate... Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2006 Haha yea I have seen a bunch of videos of people doing this, its pretty cool. I'd try it out if I wasn't so lazy... but who knows maybe someday haha. Seems pretty awesome... I wish there was a video of the person who discovered this and their reaction to being covered in cola hahaha.
cyborgxxi 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2006 Nice movie! My Geometry teacher did this for us one day. It was really fun and I liked watching it. He said that there is some sort of sugar on the coating of mentos that reacts with the coke but I think we did it with a normal coke not diet. But after watching all that it made me wonder...what if you took that and put it in an enclosed container. Put in Mentos......KABOOM!!!!I think I'll have to try this later
Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2006 cyborg I've been thinking that too haha, it'd be insanely hard to actually drop it in and seal it though since the reaction seems to happen FAST, so you'd need to do soemthing time delayed... say wrap the mentos in enough paper towel that you could get the container sealed before the soaked soaked through enough (I'm sure there would be easier and/or better methods this is just the first that came to mind to demonstrate my idea)
yeh 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2006 Yeah... pretty cool right? I have just read about it couple of weeks back when I was reading about the incident of someone dying from helium inhalation. Anyway, I have a crazy idea. Kids, please just read this ONLY and please... don't try to attempt it. I don't know what will happen...How about putting a mentos into your mouth, then take a big gulp of coke? Hehe.....
Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2006 I can't imagine it would do any damage assuming you didn't try to close your mouth mid reaction... now swallowing a large quantity of coke then swallowing a mentos whole... who knows

evion 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2006 The video was superb, but there was one more thing i was wondering about that might prove really funny. What if you asked a friend to open his mouth wide open. Then pop a mentos onto his mouth and pour in the cans! I'm sure it wouldn't hurt your friend but it would be a really cool prank. Also, if you guys (cyborgxxi and Jeigh) really wanted to know how you can put it in an enclosed bottle, just try this: Wrap one mentos in tissue paper and tie it onto the bottle cap of a diet coke. Drink the coke up till you're sure if the coke is stood up it wouldn't touch the mentos. Then flip the bottle and run!

Darkwolf11235 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2006 This quite simply is about the reaction that occurs when you place mentos mints into a 2 liter bottle of diet coke. Once this is done almost imediatelly the coke will begin to fizz and bubble out of the container. I didn't believe this at first but then i tried the experiment my self and got hit by a stream of diet coke.I was wondering if anyone knew the reason for this reaction since it will not take place with a regular coke.PS: There is supposedly a movie that someone create of thousands of bottles going off at specific times to create a fountain like appearance. If anyone knows where to find this please post it.
austiniskoge 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2006 I suggest you search the forum for "mentos and coke" or something of that nature. There is a previous thread that goes into detail about this, and I posted the link to the video.
