Pluto's Two New Moons They have a name

Recommended Posts

According to an article at space.com [ http://www.space.com/2522-pluto-newest-moons-named-hydra-nix.html ] Pluto's two new moons, formerly P1 and P2, have been named Nix and Hydra.

The International Astronomical Union has officially christened Pluto's two newest moons Nix and Hydra.
The tiny satellites were discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope last May and are believed to have been formed from the same giant impact that carved out Charon, Pluto's larger satellite, discovered in 1978.

In Greek mythology, Nyx was the goddess of the night and the mother of Charon, the boatsman who ferried souls across the River Styx into the underworld ruled by Pluto. The IAU changed the spelling to "Nix" after the Egyptian spelling of the goddess to avoid confusion with two asteroids that had already been named "Nyx."

What idiot at NASA originally decided on P1 and P2 anyway?? I mean, come on! You find something, name it intresting. Anyways, Nix and Hydra are cool names... but how do we know that they're not stars? 1) Pluto is nothing more than a hunk of ice... it is nothing more than an ice ball, 2) What ever happened to the "10th planet"?

Still cool anyways...

Don't get me wrong, I love the sky and astronomy.

Oooh, that's really interesting, I didn't know Pluto had more than one moon. ^^; The goddess of the night, Nix... I think that's a really pretty name, though I think I like the spelling Nyx better... oh well~

When my friend was a kid, he and his brother had a hamster which they called superman. When it died their parents got them a new one which the boys named superman II. Well they were better names than P1 and P2.

Lmao yeah, P1 and P2 are about the most unoriginal names I have ever heard for anything. The person who named them that must have been a real boring guy... I wouldn't want to be stuck in a room with them for even five minutes. >_>

Don't ever visit NASA then  lol They're great people, but they lack creativity for smarts... kinda sucks... it's like me almost. once in a blue moon will I create something cool.

Good one .

But Nix and Hydra sound like goofy names to me as well. Isn't Hydra a microscopic organism that has some wierd ways of locomotion? And Nix also means 'Nothing' in some language, I'm not sure which one.

Hmm, I never read that article before, but I always though that Pluto had only one moon called Charon, in the photo they look so small, that it seems to me their are non bigger than some little country in Europe.. But I still didn't see any actual info, but that site can't really lie unless those articles can be written by people, who just want to write an article with some theories, because as said above, maybe those spots are stars? :unsure:Yeah, that 10th planet vanished from news very fast, I never even wanted to accept it as a planet being a human, it is so small, I would call it as most smart people, planetoids or how it is called in English, as I read further about it, because I wanted to argue with my physics teacher about it, there are much more planetoids in that territory, just that one was "bigger" than others, I think that it is hard to explore that territory? Darn, I lost a lot of interest in astronomy since 8th form, found other interesting hobbies..

Yep! I studied them in Bio class!

This Hydra was named after the many-headed lizard that protects Hades.

Hey, I didn't know there were other moons! That's interesting.Haha, those NASA fools. Has anyone ever been to the Houston Space Center? Quite an enriching experience, but it's very family-oriented. If you think it's going to be sterile and quiet, think again. You can basically only go to the hands-on display place. Cool, but boring after a while.I'd like to know more about those moons. Maybe I'll search Wikipedia.
