European researches have developed "neuro-chips" in which living brain cells and silicon circuits interact with one another.

The microchip which is implanted in neuro is 1 millimeter square only chip. But it has over 16,000 transistors and hundreds of capacitors on it. it is bonded to the brain cells by using special proteins found in brain.
neural electrical signals can passed to the silicon chip. They interact with each other. the microchip has ability to records the brain's electrical impulses

They are still working on eliminating the side effects of implanting this kind of chip.

We soon could use more extra processing power!

The heck?! That's some odd stuff there >_< I don't even know how it can be possible! Haha, though it does seem like a cool futuristic idea, I wouldn't mind seeing how it goes. How safe is that thing though if it's out? There's a high probability of brain cancer, or even brain deterioration isn't there? If so, I don't mind seeing how it goes still haha.

This reminds me of the time I went around looking for a 2 GB chip to replace te 32 MB one that came with my phone. Imagine being able to walk into your local hospital and walk out with a memory slot on the side of your head. Okay, so that one's a joke for now, but the possibility of implanting a chip into the brain has a huge number of possibiliies. Here's some I can think up of:1. All purpose communication device: chip embedded in the brain that draws energy from the brain, and is a radio transmitting device that works just like one's handheld phone. Unlike a phone however, there'd be no need to hold a device against your ear, but simply think (thus activating) of taking the call and letting the chip/s interact with the brain directly to pass on the interpreted radio signals to 'sound' that the brain understands and 'voice' as the brain transmits as part of the communication. This would be something of an 'always on' system that would allow for a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) worldwide connection, and would supply a list of friends, families and acquaintances for anyone with an implant to simply think of speaking with and instantly (through tha P2P network - bouncing the signal from one head to the next) be able to connect and communicate with the person called - should the person select to receive the call. World-wide-communication for free. This system would however be able to conventionally connect to the land and mobile network, through sattelite uplink. (All this assuming that we're able to sort out terabit wireless data transfer since the brain would be able to communicate with another brain directly, much faster without the need for human to human interface modules like speaking and hearing physically).As an all purpose communicaition device, the chip would also be capable of complete desktop capabilities, and be able to compose text and image based documents and presentations and be able to access the web (either through the free P2P system or through a worldwide ISP).2. The next step would be to upgrade the chip to be able to receive A/V sattelite feeds - in effect, being able to receive TV and radio - directly into your head. Of course, it would also mean that one'd go in for something like this as long as one had the ability to switch between channels and have the ability to switch off at will.There of course would be some potential negatives to consider, like a third party taking over the chip through radio and causing mis-information to be fed. And, since the brain is directly linked to the chip, the very scairy possibility of having someone take over the subject's brain completely (like as in research being done with mice <direction and movement control>).Most interesting and has immense future potential. Can't wait to read about more research in this direction.

Haha they are a fair ways away from making chips that can 'upgrade' us, but I love that was where everyones mind seemed to run to hehe For some reason it seems to me like it would be hard for them to do more then 'replace' or 'repair' things with these chips, rather then actually ever 'upgrade' us... I mean there would assumedly be massive psychological issues with going from our current mental capacity to some exceptionally greater one, be it intelligence, mental response time, memory, etc. Seems like it would be something so foreign that we'd have a hard time adjusting.That having been said I hope they keep researching into this. I'm sure the possibilities are endless at least from a mental ailment reparation point of view. It would be amazing if they could start fixing neurological disorders by replacing the damaged or ill part of the brain with the appropriately designed chip...But yea, even if they get this tech up and running in the near future I can't see it being anytime soon that it starts having interactive qualities from our concious point of view, just moreso working together behind the scenes.

Believe it or not, we computer geeks may think this is like the coolest thing to have ever happened to man and is a great milestone to many other futuristic discoveries, but the only other problem left is that of Ethics.

You might say that you're only going to get an extra 3gig "brain memory" space from the neuroshop 50 years from now but another 100 hundred years later, everyone would be talking about the latest games downloaded to the brain where they can simultaneously switch to an unconscious form of the mind and the game chip will manipulate the brain into believing that reality is the game. Sort of like a dream i guess. And 30 years after that....

Boy: "Hey wanna go 'in' with me?"
Girl: "Sure, meet you at the mall?"
Boy: "Got it, see ya there!"

*plop* (Both of them drops down unconscious in the wireless social interacting dream world.)

Yeah so maybe I'm sounding very pessimistic about this but I really am excited about all this, though I believe that Human Ethics should be put into mind when starting these types of research, just like the art of cloning. Heck, i wouldn't mind an external mp3 player plugged into the part of my brain that manages sound in the ear so i wouldn't have to bother with earphones anymore and their messiness. But i sure would not submit myself to downloading my Biology textbook into my brain instead of going to school.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is, we must not take these things for granted, only if it makes like easier and enjoyable just a tad little bit.

the capacity of the human brain is not mentioned in the gigabytes (heck terabytes is even an understatement). Microchips being implanted in ones brain, while sounding futuristic, is actually being done today. A few Parkinson's patients or severe epilepsy have been reported to be implanted with devices like these. For now, they are just pacemakers; they regulate the electrical impulses in the brain to prevent unwanted/unnecessary neuronal activity. Of course the future applications are endless: for the paralyzed, for the deaf, for the blind, for the memory impaired

im not that surprised. They already have artificial eye, arms, legs, so probably they'll come with artificial brain to. If we get computer chips in our head we can go on the internet to. Then we wont have to go to school and learn, we'll be able to teach ourselfs. It's amazing.

But then, talk about inconvience. Who knows what science and doctors will be doing to our brains twenty years from now. It freaks me out thinking they can have anything implanted in our bodies without us knowing about it.Somethings should just stay the good old fashion way.

I think techocian hit the nail on the head with that post! Yes it seems fantastic, especially to us students, I'd never need to read anything again, jsut download it all onto a chip and BAM! Instant A. But theres huge downsides like what happens if theres an EMP storm or even a thunder storm, we all know what happens to the TV and somethnig like that going on inside my head doesnt sound fun! also what happens if theres a war, one EMP bomb could kill hundreds, thousands even. AND (yes there is more!), think back to the matrix film...I know its far fetched but Sony already have a patent on Matrix-like technology but if either of these technologies make it to us innevitably some-one is going to want to connect to a network, be it like the internet or mobile phones or any knid of network it doesnt matter. If anyone wanted anything all they have to do is basically hack into people!!! All it would need is a little command line programming and millions could die, belive they are dogs, become puppets or anything. I know that I definately wont be taking any of this technology because its just like signing your life away. No-one would have to worry about bird-flu anymore but we will have to worry about the next My-doom or sasser to hit and just imagine that, every few minutes your whole brain would 'reboot'! Cant be good But all said I dont doubt it could help alot of people, like already said those with brain problems like epilepsy, parkinsons etc... but i dont really thing we can do much to improve nature, we are all already pretty perfect except for the odd problem here or there with disease and such but thats part of everyday lfie and thats how it should stay in my humble opinion! Although it would be fun to watch people obey everything you typed into theyre new 'Brain' hehe!

Yeah, I see a lot more downsides to this sort of technology in the general population than I do for simple scientific research. The whole problem with upgrades and whatnot... it's going to be like starting all over again, next thing you know, they have Windows 95 out and you're still running on a DOS command line It would be awesome if you could just upload books and crap to your memory, but other than that I would be opposed to any other sort of hookups... Cell phones built into your head?? Think of how hard it's going to be for people NOT to think of that! You'll be standing in a Super Walmart somewhere, and some chick walks past you and suddenly yelps because her dumb friend accidentially calls her via her brain because she was thinking of her or something and scares the crap out of her. You think it's bad now with people talkin on cell phones in the middle of a store, suddenly you will have people standing around talking to themselves Or people calling your brain while you're sleeping...Or total submission to unrelenting advertisements these companies will be able to throw at you at any time of day.Or people looking up porn in their head.... while they're standing next to you in line at McDonalds.Or having people sending mental images to you that you really don't want to see... like naked pictures of your mom

Yeah that's an interesting point. If we integrate electronics into our heads (or any part really), how does that impact our vulnerability to computer viruses? Does that mean that we would have to get weekly (if not daily) computer viral updates to make sure that we are 'immune' to electronic attacks? Our biological immune sytem is already taxed with everything else (avian flu, HIV, common cold etc.). How would electronic integration enhance our lives with this kind of threat looming over our heads (quite literally)?

Wow that is probably the most intresting thing I have read in awhile. I didnt know they were even working on something like this, but it with this chip it could either be the death of us or give us a better humanity. I can think of many problems that could arise if the chips were to be impanted in us. For example, the human race could be controlled by some devious individuals that somehow has access in controlling the chip that is implanted in our heads. And we would then be zombies, haha. The good would probably stopping a violent person from being violent forever with a push of a button, that would be cool. There is even a possiblity that the chip could the hopeless be hopeful in a educated driven world.But I believe that if this ever goes public there would be a lot of debate on if it ever will be available to the public. Most benifical situation of the chip implantment would probably for medical reasons, such as people that has problems with there membrane...
