2 Simple Questions

Recommended Posts

If these have been answered before, I am really sorry.I have my hosting at a subdomain, and there a few websites over there. One of those might be interesting for other people, so I would like to use a domain name for it. If I buy a domain name, is there a way to point only to that website, since it is in a sub folder (mysite.astahost.com/desiredsite)?Next one. If it is not possible do this, is it allowed to have hosting at Xisto and Xisto at the same time (with posting at both)?Thank you

You're not permitted to have an account on both trap and Xisto, which is stated somewhere in the TOS. This is simply due to the service being free and aiming to reach all that qualify for the free hosting. If you would get two hosting accounts, it would create a precedent for everyone else, and thus forcing us to accept their "requests" as well. So we stick to that rule for everyone, because altering it would mean the death of Xisto and Xisto. As far as the domain leading to a subdomain, I am not sure it is it possible. I suppose it would be a redirect then. I've tried it with a few things, and they'd always end up as redirects but not a full domain. Other than that, I can't tell you much more. Sorry.

Oh well, then what would be the best solution for something like that? I'm still not ready to pay for a host, I barely decided to buy a domain! If you have any suggestions, please tell me.

~edit~

After some Googling I discovered what AddOn Domains are.

Could this be used?

Jeigh, the admins suggest that members MOVE to Xisto to apply there because of the genre of posting.

A domain name can be attached to any part of an account. That therefore means that you could have http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and set the domain to POINT at /folder/

You can have an unlimited amount of domains pointing to an folder.

You could also assign a sub-domain to your own sub-domain. Example, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and point your domain to that. It will show in File Manager as mysite.astahost.com/subsite/ but will react differently (sort of) to normal /folder/.

Buy the Domain, point the domin to the Xisto nameservers, Park the domain in the cpanel of your account at Xisto, and point it as above. Works for me.

http://purcellcrossing.com is pointed to a sub-domain of http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ done exactly that way

Is there any need to make a request or something? And can you explain the process of buying a domain? I have never done anuthing like that before.. Where do I point the domain to Asta servers?

I don't know how you buy a domain, but after you've bought it, you have to go to its configuration manager thing, and point it to ns1.astahost.com as nameserver #1 and ns2.astahost.com as nameserver #2. You also have to configure your own server to accept the domain, but I'm assuming that you already know how to do that with cpanel.

Go to a domain name seller, tick the boxes that you want to buy, then fill in the form. Once you have done that, most companies will give you instructions after that. Just remember to shop around and look for the cheap but good ones.

Not bad, but I have found another one. It is called iPower (http://www.ipower.com/). They have domain forwarding (which I need) and it is cheap, only $2.95. What is interesting, though, is that when you order a domain name, 1 year cost $2.95 and 2 years over $10! How come?

Anyway, what do you think about it? Does it look prefessional enough? I have never bought anything online, so I wouldn't like to be scammed the first time. After all, the credit card I would use isn't mine - lol I'm only 15 :o
