Microsoft Office Goes Online!?

Microsoft is testing lots of their online services recently, such as Windows Messager Live. Now they are testing their new online service, Office Online.

I thought I just logged into other Windows XP system (using VNC) after getting into this system. You can see the Start button on left bottom corner and some office icons on the desktop. Office programs can be run by click on those icons just like normal.
Most of function of this office works. The GUI is as same as the real office 2003.
There is IE in this system as well. It can connect to Microsoft website, but not other website. The document created by office live can be saved in this testing system, but not locally. The files will disappear after you close the browser. So, donât use it for production. It is just for fun now.

that is crazy. it's windows in java on the net! shame you can't go on the internet. i was trying to goto getfirefox.com and install that.but i dont really get how this is going to be useful or atually make any difference to anything?

I don't get how it would help either. I have Micorsoft Office 2003 on my laptop, but don't use it that much. It may be to test it out but if the files disappear when you close the browse whats the point. It would be better if the files you saved were uploaded to the net, so you can also access them on other computers. It may be just a test run, but it still needs abit of tweaking.

Yes. It is not much help as it won't really save your file for you.I think they will implement login function later.Once users can login to the system, files can be saved for each user in their own folder. Otherwise, your files can be viewd or edit by everyone.

It's something that will be a part of the Internet. We've seen it all and it definitely will be a part of how we use applications. In the future, I will not be surprised if there's a new service that will only be available in online form. Wait, that's already happened, and it's called GOOGLE. LoL.

Wow, it looks really good. Too bad it completely relies on Java. I don't like Java for some reason and I'm prejudice against all Java programs. But I guess they couldn't have made the colors and layouts so pretty without it.Is this going to be a free product in the future? I guess a free Microsoft Office is beneficial on its own.

Here at work we have some security applications which mainly need that you disable Java in your IE6 settings. This means that your PC cannot use Java. In order to callaborate with your home PC, your home PC will also need to have java disabled. For such people (like me), this kind of thing is not accessible, even for private use !

I don't like this idea. Although you can use it in the net, But the performance should be lower and unreliable. When you use Java, you computer will run slower . In my experience, Java is uncompatible between different versions. More Java you need, computer become slower and instable. Then you need to add some memory or buy another fast computer to replace older one. Hope more green softwares can be developed .

I can think of two purposes for this. The first is the advertised purpose of allowing businesses to communicate well online, by sharing documents on the server, not having to worry about installing the same programs on all computers, and the like. However, for intrabusiness stuff, a mass license for Office and a good network still wins in my opinion. The second possibility, assuming the Java does not make use of Windows only Java functions, is to allow linux, solaris, etc. users to use office products.~Viz

Tell people that there is a tool called Writely which allows you to Word Process online, and people go ooh... and aah...Tell them that MS has made a similar or better product (they do rule word processing), and people respod saying "i dont see any use".Well, i think thats the best rendering of a Remote desktop I have seen yet! It's miles ahead of Writely or AjaxWrite.One more thing, this is not a Online Edition or something, its basically meant to demonstrate the MS products, without people having to download it. Since MS knows that if people download evaluations, it will get cracked within no time.Last time when I was checking Frontpage 2003 eval version, I had landed up on this page instead.Hope this gets converted to a free platform on the internet, but I know that's not to happen any time soon.
