Windows Codename "vienna"

Recommended Posts

lol .. just found this in the news .. it was confirmed on 19th Jan 2006 by microsoft, tho no actual importance was given.

Windows Blackcomb was changed to Vienna. Windows Vienna is the codename for the new version of Windows, probably due to be released in 2011. Vienna would have features that completely change the way windows look, infact the "Start" button for windows would be replaced with a new interface :D

Even the Explorer Shell would be completely rebuild, changing the way things look and work in windows. And i guess most MAC users wouldent be happy about this, but seems like windows is going to use something similar to the Apple's Dock Feature.

>>Neowin News<<

And just for the curiosity sake i typed in http://www.windowsvienna.com/, and the doman is taken by GeekPedia .. lol .. incase microsoft wants to buy this domain, imagine the amount they would be ready to pay up. :D

Dhanesh.

LOL .. all i can say is that we cant expect vienna to come out atleast anytime before 2013 .. woo .. thats way long .. and anyways people arent so happy with vista .. or are they ? I checked out the December beta recently .. and yep it suc**d .. are they ever going to get out of beta stage .. hell so many bugs in the latest beta.

Plus not to mention SP3 for XP is going to come out in future, wish M$ had a OS perfect enough with no SP. Thats a dream i guess for the next 30 years ...

Interesting. I wonder how much Microsoft's plans for the OS of the fairly-distant future will change as technology improves and grows. Maybe by then they'll have come up with the neural-input devices that we just plug right into our central nervous systems. Then again - knowing my luck, I would get the BSoD the second the transmitters were plugged into my body. Heh. That would suck.

These guys are unbelievable :D They haven't finished Longhorn (I hate the name Vista), they are still working on XPSP3, they are toying around with a C# kernel (Singularity) and now they even got time to make another new windows. They should better spend their time on making bugfixes and release them sooner instead of every month :D .I mean, look at Suse, YOU informs me about updates a few times a week, why can't M$ ?

Well, i suppose if ya got bill gates pile in the cash, ya can go wild with developing different OS's. And damn. these people need to get a better choice of names. "Blackcomb" and "Longhorn" sound cool, but "Vista" or "Vienna"? yeesh

Yes, there will be M$ .. No, m not supporting M$ in anyway .. but to think of it, a giant like M$ has come along way to what it is today. I have read a few days ago that M$ is ready to make Keyboards and Mice for Apple computers with brand name M$, now thats a start to raid on other products. If M$ dosent even make it to the OS business, m shure there are many other sections in which M$ could come upto. Like maybe mobile OS.

But fact remains that M$ wont go down so easily, people are used to Windows a hell lot than they are used to any other OS. M talking about novice users, starters etc. People who have absoloutely no knowledge of computers are mindset to start with windows. If that changes well M$ goes down in no time. I wished people started off with Linux or Macs, but everyone "believes" that Windows is THE os, and nothing is easier than windows. No one looks at it technical or functionality wise.

Hopefully in the future when Apple, Linux etc come out to be close to windows (in user aceptance and GUI) then i guess something would change till then people will "suffer" with M$.

2011 is 5 years away. imagine how good linux and hardware will be by then. hardware prices will have gone down massively by then as well.i think m$' fortunes rest on vista, if vista is really bad and full of bugs and security flaws i really think that x86 mac's and linux will take over

Why do they plan that far ahead? That's the nature of software and milestones. I remember when I worked as a lowly coder that we had a set of features for this release and a room or two or three planning on what features our clients wanted in the next release and then debating what was "acheiveable" by the next due date. We'd have a shipping party usually on a Friday that was always a brunch. We'd come in and the place would be full of Krispy Cremes and St. Louis Bread CO. stuff (that's Penera Bread for all you smucks outside of St. Louis) and then we'd order IMO's for Lunch (That's St. Louis for Pizza for again said smucks). We'd eat, drink, (being merry was not tolerated by company policy) until about 2PM and then go home. We'd usually get Monday off too, but Tuesday it was back to work answering tech support questions and bug fixing. The first of the next month, we'd already be into the planning stages of the next release to be rushed out in another 6 months. So planning like this isn't too uncommon especially on larger applications. I mean the stuff we were doing had 6 full time coders and maybe 150k lines of code. Imgaine something will millions and milllions and millions of lines of code. Sometimes the planning stages took longer than actual production. BUt that was for a small company that no longer exists today. Anyway....back on topic....The general consenses on WIndows today is that any major improvements will require a jump like Mac OS 9 to OS X: a complete rebuilding almost from scratch. Which is something MS might be considering. Now it would be something if they chose something like OpenBSD as their starting point and worked from there. Which under the BSD licenses they are free to do. Infact the Windows NT line of products include more than a few lines of BSD code in them already. (like the IP stack if I remember correctly) But Windows copy Macintosh? No....never...
