Photoshop Tutorial: Great Night Effect Please rate the tutorial

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

This is the first time I am writing a tutorial so please be patient where ever I go wrong.

I saw an image at deviantart.com which i liked very much, however I have lost that now, but still have that in mind. In this tutorial i have tried to get that similar effect on any photograph.

Here is the picture i started off with (better if there is no sun):

https://j'>https://g' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' />

The first step is to desaturate it: (ctrl+shift+u)

https://j'>https://g' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' />

Now we need to have a moon:

Use eclipse tool to draw a circle (feather=10px) and fill it with white color. Lower down the opacity of it. Thus we have got a moon.

I added some grass at the bottom (upto you).

And now comes the main part LIGHTNING:

goto filter>>render>>lightening effects

Place a bulb at the moon and choose light type as omni. Adjust the intensity according to the image.

Do the same for all luminous objects in the image (light type = spotlight if at corners and light type= omni if at the center).

Here is what i got:

In order to give a bit of dreamy effect, just duplicate the layer and set the blend mode to darken and add Gaussian blur (of about 2)

Thatâs it:

I hope you all liked it, though it is not as good as the image I saw.

Please feel free to post your comments and do rate the tutorial.

Nice tutorial. Though I thought the green light was kinda weird and the grass was too bright. But other than that, it looks really good. Was the light post originally in the picture? It looks like it was pasted in there.

It fell from the sky lol.

Great tutorial, but I have to agree with the green light and the bright grass.

i like it but i agree that the grass and light feel a bit out of place...the grass sticks out and the light post is just sorta out in the middle of no where. . . i think it did drop out of the sky

First I would like to thank you all for taking interest in the tutorial and posting your comments.

I agree that the lightning was little out of place. However here i correct it:

As for grass, i did that purposely. The image that i saw had those like that. However that is totally upto you.

I hope that it is alright now.

Thanks once again guys for your replies

Wow, that looks so much better. Those dark spots made it look foggy, and also made the whole image look darker, more like night. Another thing (wow, I go on forever), it also brought out the island in the background and made you notice it.

Hmm, nice work on that picture. But don't you think that in a dark environment, a light, even as dim as it is, should be gleaming? The effect on that lamp can be much improved on. =]For more detail, you could even add slight shadows on the moon, maybe using noise and doing stuff here and there.Anyway, great job.

Very good indeed. Though it's obvious that the lamp post didn't belong there and that you used a soft brush to get rid of the initial grass in the original picture.
The edited picture is awesome. I'm an avid user of the duplicate-layer-set-gaussian-blut-to-3-and-change-blending-mode thingum. I love it's dreamy effect.

What could, perhaps, add to it, is if you add a layer, use the lasso tool, feather 2 or 3, make triangular strokes from the moon, stretching downwards, fill it with white, drop the transparacy a bit, perhaps fiddle with some blending modes, and perhaps adding a slight outer glow in the same white color.
Just a suggestion though. I love your tutorial.
