Houdini 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 Recently my main computer has been acting up and I even had a hard drive to fail, so I was reduced to use an old 4 gig hard drive and with that said couldn't use XP so I loaded ME on it, but then the machine would just quit, die for no apparent reason even though I have a program that constantly monitors voltage levels temperatures and so forth I never got a warning. So yesterday I was supposed to go fix a guys computer that he couldn't format the new hard drive he had but he would not be home til 2 PM so I stopped at a little thrift store in hopes of finding a kinda newer machine for a hard drive...what I found was a ComPaq machine with the intel inside (PentiumIII) and a software sticker for Windows 2000 Professional and a sticker that said $9.98 and said it needs work. So I plug the box in then get a monitor and keyboard and mouse and fired it up and it booted Windows XP Professional then I clicked on one of the uer names and it kinda hung up but I knew it should at least have a 15 - 20 gig hard drive plus the PentiumIII. I bought it and took it home and am using it right now. There were two users and the machine kept failing Windows explorer so I did a restore, and eliminated a bunch of useless programs which may have been causing the hang up in the first place and now I have a new main computer for $10.90 a fiddling around with it for a little while.Every now and then something good has to happen and that was in fact one of the best birthdays I have ever had hope the same for all those on this site too!! evion 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 What luck...but heck I'm not even allowed to customize my computer....well that is after i sorta blew up the CPU... These few days i gotta get some parts from some second-hand store and fix up a windows 98 computer for myself. My budget would be something like $50. Yeah maybe I'll strike it lucky and get a ten buck hard drive but hey...these things happen!
iGuest 3 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 That's really cool, Houdini. It probably had nothing to do with luck; most likely you bought a computer part. It really isn't that hard to assemble a computer together so instead of shelling out the cash for a pre-assembled one, I like to buy the parts and connect the pieces. Saves a lot of money too. abhiram 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 Wow! 10$ for a P3?!! Amazing man, that's what I call luck!
iGuest 3 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 I need to get another comp to use strickedly as a linux box to experiment with.Debian Linux is the most hack-proof computer in existence. Most businesses use it as a web host for their company website. And abhiram, Houdini didn't buy a computer for $10. Houdini bought the drive, since his old one was acting off.But I concur, you certainly got the deal. Good job; more power to you! *Salutes*

He bought a box... i.e. a hard drive, motherboard, processor and cabinet. ok... my bad... not just a computer .
AbyssalStalker 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2005 Very good deal, but how could you ever play games on that? I'm running a P4, 2.6 and it still runs like a grandmother at times. *shrug* Well, as long as you're happy with it I suppose!
