Banning Spammers... is a pain

There's been spammers/trolls registering spam accounts on my forums, and about once a week I have to go in and clear the porn off of my website

I do try to IP ban whoever it is but it would seem their using a proxy, the IP address is always totally different but I know their the same person because they post the same things, on top of that their registering with bs account names like "Forum-Team" and they send me (The admin) PM's saying stuff like "Your computer is infected!!! go here to clean your computer of this infection or you're account will be deleted" and they are trying to post as being an admin.... I think since I'm the site owner I know their not an admin.. how retarded can you be? I can't keep these people off of my site! is there any way to ban someone who uses proxies??

Well, you could use a catcha on account registration to prevent those bots from registering new accounts. Also hire some mods there and let them deal with the spam for you (slaves... bwahaha ). Restrict the amount of PMs that one can send in a day or whatever. Also look for any anti-spam plug-ins for your forum software to prevent this from happening in the future.

oh ok...well, i know certain sites have certain ip's blocked automatically. there has to be a list somewhere. they include ip's of spammers and proxies. i haven't researched it but there has got to be a list floating around somewhere. then just import the list. and yes, use a simple captcha. not those hard to read ones though. just a simple one or like the ones that ask for simple addition. also, you might try implimenting something where they have to enter a correct email, and verify it before they have any privileges.

hahahaha well I do have a catchpa, but I guess I should use email verification, the reason I didn't is because I always found that a pain to do so I never asked my visitors to do what annoys me haven't much use for mods yet, my site is not launched, I'm waiting until I ether get some money, or enough myCENTs for a new domain, because my current one doesn't fit the purpose of my website now. thx for your help I'll look for that list. although I want to be careful what IP's I ban because I don't want to ban innocent visitors

If you are using popular content management systems like Joomla, Wordpress and etc, there are plug-ins for banning popular spamming IP addresses.You can also search for known spammer's IP address and add to your .htaccess. If they are concentrated from one particular location, i.e. czechoslovakia, you can ban the whole country's IP range. However you decide to ban think of the strategy.

I encountered similar problem with my forum initially. I have to almost login and clear those spam thread, two to three times a day. Eventually, I got fedup and decided to make the account post-approval. It will mean I have to login everyday and approve/disapprove the account everyday. Not the best solutions but that sure beats having those spammers flood my forum with nonsense.
