These Nigerian scams are everywhere. There was an article in the local paper a while back on these scams too and some guy actually got cheated of his life savings. I can't seem to find the article anywhere online though. I don't understand how anyone can fall for these scams...those e-mails look so fake.

Here are some other local articles on Nigerian scams:

http://news.asiaone.com/news/AsiaOne%20News1021-95188.html

http://digital.asiaone.com/digital/news/Story/1106-98663.html

http://digital.asiaone.com/digital/news/Story/A1Story20071223-42188.html

It seems they'll stoop to anything.

I also found an article on BBC News on a bunch of people who do reverse-scams (they scam the Nigerians who try to scam them LOL)..thought it was pretty funny. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/3887493.stm

Scamming's been rampant through the years and its not gonna stop in a hurry - there are plenty of people who are being introduced to the internet daily and these people are fresh meat for the scammers - they set a trap for them and before they know it they're scammed - it's really sad but there's not much that can be done abut it. New users and old ones as well should be sensible enough not to let their guard down. Only then will they be able to fight these menace.

I've done a school project on internet and mobile scams, so I've got some idea on how they work.Basically, a ?Nigerian? scam are called Nigerian scams because the initially came from Nigeria, but they can are now basically spread across the planet (haha, who's ever heard of a copyrighted scam?), so they can now come from anywhere in the world. So damoon... they're not all made by Nigerians... :) So don't worry. :PThese people usually say that they've got some money or some thing (a huge sum, of course, like millions) that they want to share with you... or that they need your help in retrieving this "money" that has been trapped in wars or something. But anyway, they just can't get it out or something. Like government taxes or something, and they need your help in getting it out. Then they like, ask you to pay some kind of up-front money or some sort or give them your bank account or credit card details (you never know, some people are actually desperate enough to fall for this. :P) to help them get the money, and that you are promised to get a portion or a kind of percentage of it. You might be asked to pay some money for "taxes" or somethings to help get the money to your bank. And oh yeah, they're usually (the scammers and scams) from overseas so you can't track them... :)But anyway, these money that they ask from you may start out very small amounts. But if you actually pay them, they make up new fees that you have to pay out of your pocket before you can receive your so called "millions of money" that they have gotten. And then they will keep making up these fees until they think they should stop.So yeah... and you will never be see the money that you have sent over, nor the money that was promised to you... :PAnd no, they don't exactly get the money out of your bank account. If they do, they'd be easily traced, I reckon. But smart, isn't it? Well, it would be when it initially started. No one would be expecting it and they'd think that they actually would strike rich. :)But if it was my case, like, if I was the first potential victim that they would try and scam off, I'd be like: "er... wrong email?""Maybe you should check the email first."haha.

Let's not generalize and put entire tag of spamming on "Nigerians". If we've to look at the spam trend we can see that. Most of the forum spam that comes from Russia. All those links to the porn site and viagra ads on dead forums is from russia. "Get-rich-quick-quick" and "SEO" ads based SPAM comes from canada and pakistan. Some pakistani spam even send ads of anti-virus and anti-malware. If you check the "Downline" and "earn money from home" type of scams then you'll see that is from india. And mix of all these spam is also from US. So at the end, let's not tag any single country for SPAM mail and postings. SPAMmer are universal, even on Xisto too. :PBut seriously, i'm turn off with the scam mails like " x person is wife of y person and wants to transfer huge amount of money". Or "You've won this much money in uk lottery and you need to send x amount to receive your funds". There are even worst cases, some SEO companies are sending mails by checking whois and sending ads to lure domain owners to get SEO advice from them. Seriously, spammers get a life. Think differently, come up with something new.

how they can get the money with those email? is it when you give your bank account? or what?

Most scammers are excellent negotiators. Once you fall in their trap, they fully convince you with their sweet words and friendliness. And once you get in contact with them, consider yourself stuck forever! They won't leave you unless they extract something or the other from you. So it is best to leave such emails unanswered. I once tried to play along with a scammer and acted as if I believed his words. After exchanging 3-4 emails I stopped contacting him. But that idiot didn't leave me and bugged me with emails for two months, each more violent than the last!

This is a good example of the scammers' strategy - they just look out for people who reply and they try their best not to let go of those who have fallen in the trap. This is their only trick and if we avoid falling in the trap in the first place then there's no need for any fear of them getting access to bank accounts, etc. Just steer away clear from such emails. If you really win a lottery you'll get someone at your door, not in your inbox!!! :P

What spammers in Xisto I dont know that. Are you a spammer. I think I will have to hide my profile to don´t allow some spammer steal my email and start to send spam all the days. The administration of this forum maybe have to research a little to determine if it´s true that someone users are Spammers.

The nigerians are not the only persons who dedicated their lifes to send the spam to others. In Honduras I don´t know anybody who know what is the spam :P:):P We are behind the technology yet. :) :)

The americans are spammers too. But I can´t believe at all is the people who falls in this things that is ridiculous how can you be so foolish. When some of this emails arrives to my inbox I detected inmediately. And I deleted it like all the people knows you have to do it. I don´t have family in others countries. I don´t know anything about transfer money to save it if the country is in war so I cant believe that someone people can fall in this primitive traps. Oh..Oh.. we are in Xisto forums so I fell in a trap :(:):P Sorry.

When some email arrives to your inbox. You can open it without trouble. And if inside it´s written that you need to give your bank account information or your credit card information: S-I-M-P-L-E DELETE IT OK.

That´s all the tutorial to never fall in the spam traps ok. I hope I could help you. "Spam for dummies" I think :(:P :P

Nigerian scammers dont ask you for credit cards all they do is send you a mail through a hacked webmail and when you reply they will rid you off your last dime and most of them use what we call supernatural powers to talk to their vistims whom they refer to as "Maye" meaning "Fool" in Yoruba Language and when you call them they will put a tortoise in their legs and anything they tell you is what you will do ..... its brutal and demeaning but what i believe is that we all should spread the message and then " He Whom has ears let him/her hear"

There has been lots of talks about Nigeria posting too many scam mails. In 2003 Nigerian money, adult websites was at No. 3, on the top 10 scams. Nigerian money - the scammers that just won't let live - follows auctions and general shopping complaints.Looking at the content of the scam mails, if you are one of the lucky few to have somehow missed to receive such ones, it usually comes in the form of a email plea for help, often from a Nigerian slave or inmate who is trying to transfer money out of the country. The latest tactic for luring victims, as reported is to make the e-mail look like it was sent from a real existing bank. Earlier, these scammers also have used fake phishing websites to bait people. In exchange for the use of their bank account, the recipient is told they'll receive a percentage of the funds being moved. Unfortunately, about 10% of all recipients reply back and seek further clarification with the authors and about one percent of those respondents become seriously involved, and become victim of fraud. The victim is then asked to transfer money as a token of unexpected fees or others until the victim refuses to pay further. By that time enough is taken away.
