The Simpleton 2 Report post Posted July 10, 2009 We all know that presently the most prefered Linux flavour is Ubuntu, which is based on Debian. It is so popular because it is easy and convenient to use even for the layman so it rightfully sits at the top of the chart containing the top Linux distributions. We also know that Google recently announced its plans of releasing the Chrome Operating System, which is also based on the Linux kernal. Many people are thinking about the competition between Chrome OS and Windows, while some are wondering about that between Chrome OS and Ubuntu! You may not have wondered about that but still, a statement from Ubuntu's side has been given, by its marketing manager Gerry Carr. He says just because Google releases a product, there's no reason for it to be completely successful. Carr may be skeptical about this matter but Google sure has ruffled quite a few feathers of all OS makers worldwide!
akashi 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2009 Google chrome OS is a cloud computing system which is (i think) need internet connection. For ppl with slow connection, they won't choose chrome. Inspite, they'll use winblows or linux.
Baniboy 3 Report post Posted July 10, 2009 But I wouldn't use an OS just for browsing the internet, there's so much more I do with my computer that I couldn't possibly do in Chrome OS. And as I could guess, google will force Chrome browser with it first before other browsers get developed for that platform, yea it's fast, butNo adblocks, and google dominates internet ad business, maybe this is just a trick to get more money from ads (Am I the only one here suspecting this?!).No privacy, by accepting google license agreement to use Chrome, you sell your rights to google for free. All your browsing will be easily indexed.I really can't understand why google would try to dominate operating system area with an open source project that obviously isn't beneficial. SO THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY HERE... And you can't deny it.
The Simpleton 2 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 Wow I guess not many people thought of it in that angle! I just hope the desktop doesn't show ads every time we log in And I still don't understand how google is going to put all the applications people need to use daily into a simple browser. Is it possible to put an audio converter/encoder in a browser?! :angel:I somehow feel google is slowly turning into another microsoft, by trying to poke into every field of computing and trying to make their footprint there. While it's not a bad thing because google isn't taking money like MS, google is also bringing its ads into everything! People would rather have an ad-free zone but google still hasn't found a way to remove the ads and yet keep people happy (well, who has anyway?!)All in all, I feel Ubuntu and none of the other OS makers have anything much to fear from the entrance of the chrome OS. akashi 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 Yep, it is impossible to put C&C Generals, CS, WoW etc inside a browser. I'll stick with Kubuntu
Is it possible to put an audio converter/encoder in a browser?!
iGuest 3 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 Issues...Ubuntu Not Afraid Of Chrome OsI really don't have an issue with google creating an os. It will help get microsoft off its high horse. And as far as ads go I don't believe google will apply ads to its os other than maybe a new google homepage that improves related websearchs. But other than that I doubt it will be an issue. Google is having alot of issues with microsoft and lawsuites... I just hope there money and hearts are in this battel for the right reasons... To put microsoft out of business or atleast bring them back down to our level! thats just me though. As always we fear that chrome wont be as powerful as XP/Vista however ill use it because its linux and its google. If I need to change the code I will. But until a linux can support my microsoft based games and adobe software without an app I cant use it full time.-reply by Brian Stanton
The Simpleton 2 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 I saw an old documentary about google today and it was funny to see how they tried to avoid questions like "What do you do with the data you store from users' search listings?" and "How much does google care for users' privacy" and something else like that. Somewhere down the road, google turned into some sort of a villain for its users, by not revealing what they're planning to do with the data they store and similar tactics. The sad thing is, not many people seem to be bothered by this. These are the people who are really busy with daily life that they don't think twice before choosing their actions while using google products. they would rather have their task finished quickly than waiting to think about their privacy. Well, this is what happens most of the time!
Tombomb318 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 I think unbuntu will still be better then google chrome because you cant have all the cool programs like amegatron.
The Simpleton 2 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 I wonder how far the chrome OS will support games. I mean, Ubuntu can run some windows games through WINE so this satisfies a few gamers at least. I don't think Chrome will win in this field either. It seems that there are a lot of places where the chrome OS can go wrong! well let's wait and see... akashi 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 I don't think cloud OS would support something like that. They'll support games, but just flash and shockwave games  For you who satisfied with those games (and maybe, MMORPG), then it would be OK BTW, could we install and run firefox inside chrome OS ;p I wonder how far the chrome OS will support games. BCD 1 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 (edited) Firefox on Chrome OS? I don't know. But it may happen. By the way, we may also see Internet explorer on chrome! He accordingly shifted attention away from any possible direct rivalry with Microsoft and said the Redmond, Washington company was "welcome" to port Internet Explorer if it liked, although he didn't expect this to be the case.Source Also Microsoft has told about Gazelle. Its own OS in this genre. Unlike Chrome which runs each tab as separate process, gazelle will run each element on the page as separate process. Microsoft says that, this will increase security and reliability. But, wait this is all new genre of apps coming out. I would also like to see Opera OS, Firefox OS soon Edited July 11, 2009 by BCD (see edit history)
jlhaslip 4 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 If the Google OS is to be based on a Linux Kernel, does that mean they will be providing a version of their Sketch-up package that will work on Linux? Has anyone heard that?
The Simpleton 2 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 In a way, today's scenario is really very confusing for the average consumer. Too many options and so many ways to go....it's a battlefield out there, with all the companies fighting it out to win the consumers' attention. For someone who wants to buy a computer and get his job done quickly, it's going to take a lot of time to decide which OS is the best for his purpose and which will give him good value. Windows, Mac, Linux (which in itself has a lot of distributions to choose from), open solaris and now chrome OS and gazelle...whew! when will this war ever end?! The Simpleton 2 Report post Posted July 11, 2009 Don't worry that wont happen soon, but the war will never end, that's for sure! It's only going to get more and more intense in the coming days. Let's just grab a bag of popcorn and watch the war
