iPhone 3.0 vs. Palm: which one would you want to get?

iPhone or Palm Pre?

Sprint, Palm Pre’s exclusive carrier announced that Palm Pre would be launched on June 6. Then this summer that’s the question many would-be-smart phone purchasers just might ask themselves. Both have their pros and cons. The iPhone has a huge profile and market presence, but the Pre has the old-school Palm faithful who have been waiting a long time for their Next Big Thing. The iPhone has massive channels and even Sprint admits they won’t be advertising the Palm Pre much due to low initial supply. But those most likely to want the Palm Pre already know it’s coming, where to get, and may well be reading this while already standing in line.

But what about the consumer on the edge? The consumer who has an older iPhone or Palm, or the one who’s about to move up from a feature phone for the first time. What about the dreaded “undecided”? This article is for them. Now let’s get it on.

Display

Posted Image

IPhone: beautiful, large (3.5 inch diagonal), high-resolution (480x320 screen) multi-touch display.

Palm Pre: Beautiful, large (3.1 inch diagonal), high-resolution (480x320 screen). The screen is not as large as the iPhone (0.4 inch smaller) but this is balanced against other hardware features such as the removable battery and sliding keyboard further below.

Advantage: Tie

Keyboard

Palm Pre has a physical, hardware-based QWERTY keyboard while the iPhone has a virtual, software-based keyboard that can be QWERTY (or anything else).

For those who need to feel those keys, the Palm Pre is the obvious choice. However, the Pre’s keyboard is reportedly somewhere between a Treo Pro and a Palm Centro: softer, more gummy keys with a narrow width overall. It might not be to everyone’s liking. That said, at least the Pre has one, and it’s a slider to boot, which means if you don’t need it, you can just tuck it away back under the screen where it came from.

The iPhone, can draw any kind of keyboard it wants. So if you need to type occasionally (or often) in Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, or most any language, you can easily switch between those exact keyboards. You can also automatically be presented with web-optimized, or video, audio — any task at all — specific keyboards.

The iPhone is an excellent touch screen phone, no doubt. But for heavy texters and e-mail addicts, the lack of a physical keyboard can be annoying. Now Palm Pre combined a touch screen and keyboard, pleasing both touch screen and keyboard fans. So Palm Pre wins.

Advantage: Palm Pre

Network

In the US — which is the only country with initial availability — Sprint has exclusive rights to the Palm Pre, much as AT&T has a lock on the iPhone. When you choose mobile phone, also make a choice between the carriers. There are two factors to consider:

1. AT&T is a GSM network, which means you can theoretically pop out your SIM card and put it in another mobile phone. It is great in emergencies, and if you travel and don’t want to deal with roaming charges. Sprint is CDMA, so any phone switches involves a call to your carrier at the very least.

2. Sprint doesn’t currently allow simultaneous voice and data. This means if you’re talking on the Palm Pre, you can’t use the web or email, and vice versa. If you’re using an iPhone on AT&T’s EDGE service, you’ll have the same problem, but if you’re on 3G, there are no worries at all. For the Palm Pre, you’d have to switch to Wi-Fi to do that.

Again, for me, using voice and data at the same time has become a must. Looking up information while out and about on a call is a frequent occurrence. If you’re not accustomed to it, you may not miss it, but once you are, it’s hard to go back.

Advantage: iPhone

Applications

Installing new applications on the iPhone is a complete joy. It’s ultra simple and quick – an absolutely superb experience than virtually nobody has matched today. With 15,000+ apps now available there is something here for everybody and although there is a lot of rubbish there are also many superb applications.

Palm has already confirmed that it will create a full App Catalog – one that will presumably have the same functionality and ease-of-use as Apple’s App Store. Though maybe there will not (initially at least) be as many apps available for the iPhone as for the Palm Pre.

Advantage: Tie

Multimedia

For Palm Pre, it offers a 3-megapixel camera. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to snap any photos, but early reports say that the quality is pretty good. Disappointingly, the camera won't have video recording capabilities at this time, but those could be added in the future. In terms of music and movie, it is reported that the music sounds very beautiful, also the movie looks perfect with the 320*480 pixels screen. However Palm Pre can only play MPEG-4, H.263, H.264 videos and MP3, AAC, AAC+, AMR, QCELP, WAV audio files. What if you have large music or video collections you want to carry around with you on your mobile? I have got third part software to do this admire job: use Nidesoft DVD to Palm Converter to convert DVD collections into Palm Pre and Nidesoft Video Converter to convert video or music collections into Palm Pre.

As far as iPhone, there’s no doubt that iPhone is wonderful music mobile phone. Listening to music, viewing photos and watching movies/videos is just “something else” on the iPhone. IPhone can play MPEG-4 videos with resolution of 640 *480, up to 160 Kbps. Also it supports audio formats including AAC (16 to 320 kbps), MP3 (16 to 320 kbps), and WAV. With its beautiful 3.5-inch wide screen display and Multi-Touch controls, iPhone is an amazing iPod. Watch movies and TV shows in wide screen, iPhone brings you a video experience unlike any other portable device.

Conclusion

So there you have it. Two companies that both pride themselves on their high-skill products. One who’s Newton spawned an industry that the other is Pilot defined and dominated, went on to converge with the Treo only to fall behind and get eclipsed by the iPhone, and is now poised to come back with the Pre. Apple is going on to the third version of their smart phone line while Palm is introducing the first version of their third act.

If it seems like the only real deciding factors are where you live and work, what you want to do, and how you prefer to do it, well — yeah. That’s it.

Bottom line, the competition between iPhone and Pre is good for Apple and Palm — it keeps them on their toes and on top of their games — and it’s better for us. We’re lucky to live in a time and place where we have such increasingly awesome mobile options to choose between.

Come this summer, we’ll have a few more choices as well. Which one will be yours?

To be honset, you (or actually the article you just copy-pasted) didn't mention the most important aspect: price.I'll be honest, the only advantage between the palm and the iPhone is the full keyboard. That's it. A keyboard. How much is that keyboard going to cost? Looking at these specs, it better be friken cheap, because I would rather go for the now $99 iPhone 3G than this palm. (Too bad I already own one... and yes, I did own a palm once too)

I would rather go for the iPhone. The Palm Pre looks like it weighs more becasue of the keyboard. Plus, I like the iPhone's sleek design. The Palm Pre is a bit ugly to me, no offense to anyone that has one. I go for the iPhone because of the company too.For the keyboard, I would prefer the iPhone because as you mentioned, you can draw any kind of keyboard you want, whether it is English, Greek, Hebrew, Chinese, etc.For the Data and Voice, I would prefer iPhone because it can run on a 3G network. Edge is slow, true, but the only way for Palm Pre to get on a network is through Wi-Fi, which in some cases can be pretty slow. For Applications, I think the iPhone has the advantage because it already has many apps, and you can access YouTube. You can also download music onto your iPhone just as you would upload them to your iPod.Multimedia - iPhone has the advantage because it can display videos better in my opinion. My conclusion: iPhone and Palm Pre could be tied bepending on what you're using it for. If you want Multimedia and Apps, go with the iPhone. If you want your physical keyboard, go with the Palm Pre

After having touched the Pre, it feels yucky.. Its like a toy, but its not fun. The buttons are plasticky and I find myself just wanting an onscreen keyboard. Personally, the only viable reason to choose the Pre over the iPhone is the strength of the network in the area where you are going to be using it. Although the Pre is Sprint-exclusive now, Verizon expects to be carrying it by January of 2010, while the iPhone is still tied to AT&T.

People have been complaining about the iPhone ever since it was launched. But it still sells! It's got that "something" feeling about it. So despite the many complaints, I would personally prefer the iPhone over the Pre, just for that "something"!

I agree. You get the feeling that the iPhone was designed by a kid, and the end result is that it is easy and fun to use. I can't say that the Pre isn't also easy and fun to use since I didn't play with it for that long, but I feel it took too many tips from the Blackberry in terms of design/appearance and it feels like you're doing something bad when you try to use it to have fun. I hope that made sense, its a little hard to describe.

i just watched the starters video for the new IPHONE, and i would have to say the Iphone all the way, mostly because of the brand name, Palm, doesnt seem as cool, plus phones like those are so much subject to price decreases, rebates, and 2year contract things.. making other people pay for the same phone a bit later WAY less than me. And the Iphone for the most part reminds constant on the price.Another thing (excuse my language) the Palm looks ***ing RETARDED, what is it supposed to resemble.. an EGG? just by the screenshot i can tell it is comfusing to use, plus it wont be as neat as the Iphone, where you have all apps assembled, rather than a bunch of crap on your homepage, and having to go through thousands of menus to get WHAT YOU WANT.APPS. I doubt the Palm will have an app store like the iphone does :( or such a potent music downloading system, such as ITUNES.. plus come on.. that would look so uncool, im listening to music on my palm.. Iphones literaly pass for ipods.. (and they have a built in ITOUCH as well)I doubt the touch screen is as GOOD as the Iphones touch screen.. so boo to the palm (:The iphone is the ultimate phone// it will be with the new 3G S update. no questions asked i want an iphone, screw the Palm

Just for clarification, there does exist a set of apps and a store-ish interface I believe, for the palm, but it has nowhere near the number of programs available for the iPhone or even the Android.

Then it seems that the palm is going to lose out to the new iPhone isn't it? More things against it than for it. I hope Apple looks at the competition in the market and tries to listen to the customers' complaints for once and make the iPhone much more better. Yeah that's asking for much seeing that they've done a lot with the latest version, but still, what's the loss in trying to ask? :(

Well.. what kind of things would you be looking for? Sure, running multiple apps at the same time would be cool, but I usually don't find myself wanting to do that... I'm having way too much fun playing Ocarina.. XD

Hi!I've already got an iPhone, so the question is whether I'd trade it in for a Palm Pre. Well, it depends. I've gotten used to the iPhone's on-screen keyboard which in landscape mode is easy to type on with two thumbs, like most phone typists use it, so I don't see a need for a real physical keyboard... though I believe the app developers would have pretty limited screen real estate seeing how much space the landscape on-screen keyboard occupies. The Palm Pre doesn't have the refined 'look' that the iPhone has in terms of design, and it looks bulky - due to the extra keyboard, of course, but still! The key selling points of the Palm Pre are the multi-tasking feature and the availability of non-SIM-locked phones. BTW, my iPhone is a jailbroken iPhone - it took so long for them to sell the operator-locked ones here that the local stores sold jailbroken ones. Back then, I didn't know the difference till I finally clicked Update on iTunes :-(When I sign onto Yahoo Messenger from my iPhone and need to switch to another app, I think I get disconnected from Yahoo Messenger because the iPhone can only run one app at a time. If the Palm Pre can change that, they've got a leverage. They would have to figure out how to notify the user that there's a message on Yahoo Messenger, but they've probably got it figured out (considering it's Palm and all).RegardsPS: As of the time of writing of this post, the Palm Pre is still not available in my geographical location but the iPhone 3G has been available for about 3 months (?)

Hi!@haiyeerI'm pretty sure Palm did not develop the Nidesoft DVD to Palm converter that you are using - if they did, they wouldn't have Nidesoft in the name of the software. In either case, Palm has been around the longest in the smart phone/PDA business although they've been sitting on their bottoms for a while, letting other firms take over the industry. They just might make a comeback if they've got enough variety among their handsets and they don't compromise on quality, coming up with flimsy hardware.Regards
