electriic ink 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2007 ShutDownDay.org is challenging you to turn your computer off for a full 24 hours on Saturday 24th March 2007. Are you up to the challenge? To some people it might sound like a stupid idea but I know that it's not very often that I keep away from it for a full day, even if I use it for something as simple as MSN or Youtube 30 mins to an hour. That's exactly their reasoning behind it, to make people think about how reliant people are on the computer: The purpose is to get people to think about how their lives have changed with the increasing use of the home computer, how society is changing and whether or not any good things are being lost because of this. It is obvious that computers are an extremely important and vital part of society these days. Will you be doing it? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
truefusion 3 Report post Posted March 3, 2007 If i burn some of my music on a CD and use my PS2 to play it and ignore my friends when they tell me to meet them online, then i could go for 24 hours without a comp. However, for the sake of my friends and the fact that i don't feel like burning a CD, i'll continue using the comp for now.
dundun2007 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2007 yeah i could go 24 hours away from the computer pretty easily at home. Although in a busines sense to tell my work not to use their computer for 24 hours would certainly give them a good laugh. I am not sure why but i think alot of people will ignore this and for some reason they must be on the computer each and every day. Ill definatley play along with this shutdown unless something really important comes up that i must use the computer but what could possibly happen?
FolkRockFan 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 I'm a freelance writer who works on Saturdays. I'll be on the computer on the twenty-fourth.However: I appreciate what they're trying to do. Even if I don't stay off of my computer for a whole 24 hours, I can still think about how much time I spend on this thing. A lot - several hours a day, actually (total - work and recreation combined).
sylenzednuke 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 I cannot do that, I need a PC for some or the other work, don't know why. But I may be able to do it as I will be having my board exams and I might take a day off without computers, let's see.
master_bacarra 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 i can do that, although i admit that i'm pretty much attached to the computer because i spend most of my time doing a lot of school stuff, and of course, visiting trap. i remember having a withdrawal symptom after not being able to shout 2 consecutive shouts in the shoutbox for an entire week. it drove me crazy (although i think i have controlled myself for a bit). so i really understand what they're trying to point out.but the problem with that is it's on the 24th. it's a saturday, so i'm probably going to be in the front of the computer at that day unless i'm pretty much tired the day before (because i know we're going to have a demo in one of my subjects in school, and it's the last day of classes too). you know, the feeling that you've been beaten up and all of the sudden you just happen to doze off instantly after lying down. Johnny 1 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 Like the others have said, I CAN do it, I just don't want to. :PSure, if we all did it, we'd probably save the Earth trillions of dollars in a single day, but eh, it passes the time, ya know?
heavensounds 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 This is a good one It really shows how attached we are to this little boxes and not just the boxes - they are irrelevant acctually but to the whole word created inside them and in the internet. It really is becoming a big world-wide world! I know i am able to turn it off for 24 hours but I'd miss the computer so that would be pointles since I am already aware of my attachment to it...It is funny, because you always have somthing to do on the computer - it offers so many options and there are practically no limitations - you can be extremely passive, totally creative or anything else - that is the beauty of these boxes - you are the one that chooses everything - you have perfect control. I think that THE ABILITY TO CONTROL is one of those things that we all like about computers. Just think about it - what you say is done, if you say ESC something will be canceled for sure and if you press ENTER something will be done for sure....it is not that simple, but hey we really have a lot of command and control over things and that is the one thing that modern people miss in the normal world in my opinion. We live in a caotic world and being able to control is something really valuable so being cut off the computer is like a workaholic boss being cut off all his businesses for 24 hours. Tough one but good one to test your attachment...Best whises
t3jem 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 I use the computer almost every single day, so unless March 24th lands on a day where I'm out camping it is very unlikely I will be able to stay off of it for 24 hours. My entire career lies in my computer and I could not be able to go without it for a day (I know that's the reason they want this to happen). I believe in what they are trying to do, but as for me, I already know that I rely way to much on my computer, but there really isn't anything I can do about it.
