You Don't Have A Life

Recommended Posts

So, I'm minding my own business at an internet cafe', surfing the net. The person next to me looks over and starts a conversation. Now, I don't know this guy, yet I've seen him here several times as I come. Him - "Hey. Hey! I'm talking to you." I glance out of the corner of my eye, letting him know I've acknowledged him calling me. "Do you even have a life?"Me - "What?"Him - "Do you have a life?"Me - "Of course I do. I'm sure if you check my pulse, you'll feel a heartbeat."Him - "That's not what I meant. Do you have a life outside of computers?"Me - "Of course I do."Him - "Oh really? Then tell me about it."Me - "I've got a question: Why would you even care about my life outside of what little you know?"Him - "I don't have an answer to that. Maybe I just care about my fellow airmen (co-workers)." I go back to minding my own business, hoping that he comes up with a better answer than that. He then speaks up after a moment of silence. "So, how about telling me about this life outside of computers?"Me - "I'm not going to answer the question."Him - "What was that? You don't have an answer?"Me - "No, I feel as if I don't have to answer your question."Him - "I think you don't have an answer to the question. You don't have a life outside of computers, do you? You really need to get a life."Me - "Assume what you will of me, despite how little you know." He turns over to another person and starts having a conversation with them and eventually gets on a computer himself. Now, the thing that ticks me off about this whole thing is how this complete and total stranger walks into my life and makes an unjustifiable claim that my life is pointless, based soley on everytime he's seen me is on a computer. Truly, the only time I've ever seen him is on a computer as well (namely one computer in the entire cafe. He just has to use this one particular computer), yet I didn't. It just irks me so that he made a judgement call on me through ignorance. Truly, I have my own part to blame (denying the key information to clearly show I do have the "life" he seems so interested in knowing about), but even so, I'm not exactly going to share my life story with any random person who walks up.

Things like that make me laugh. Have you ever noticed if somebody is always on a computer for wheatever reason, they have no life. Yet if somebody spends all their time playing football, nothing is said. Why is that? Does anybody agree with me here or is it just me?

"Why would you even care about my life outside of what little you know?"

Why don't you tell him that you shouldn't have to answer his question if he won't answer the one that you gave him? Ask him about his life and interrogate him see what he says. I mean it really is none of his business. I probably would have gone off on him. Basically he is a hyporcrite. You should ask him when it became a law that you must tell about your personal life to total strangers that come to your house to rob you. lol I would start to tell him, "Well it all started when my mommy and daddy...." see what he says.

So true. People like that are best ignored. Anyway, the fact that he is in the internet cafe also, and that you've seen him several times in there before would suggest that he also spends some time in net cafes. If that's what he's basing your "lack of a life on" then he doesn't have one either. If anything, he sounds like just a person out to annoy people because they have nothing else to do.

I agree. It's just the way that stereotypes are constructed, and how they havent' really changed (although they probably are getting better). Though, if anything, Football is a social sport (well team based anyway), and also gives physical exercise. Many people still tend to disregard internet talking/chatting as socialising also. It tends to be a bit of a joke amongst gamers anyway - I know with my gaming friends we say things like "wanna do this at x time tomorrow?" - "sure, I have no life anyway".

He probably saw you typing up the conversation you were just having and came to the same conclusion I did. Using a computer isn't just it. Hell, everyone does. It's as common as the telephone. Overdoing it to the point that you get mad because he calls you lifeless kind of draws a line. Seriously. If somebody makes a baseless insult, it rolls along like water of a duck's back. Guilty much?

I would have looked at him and said "I can tell you this much, I've got enough of a life to where I don't have the time or energy to worry about random people around me and their lives. What about you?"
