zach101 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2006 Hey guys I use dreamweaver to code my sites, I heard even though the "hardcore" people dont use it, its at least better than front page. And what I was wondering is are there any website building/helping tools or programs besides those two? I havent heard of any but I figured there might be a few more. The other question I had was ive been hearing alot about CSS and layers. I know what CSS is and have been trying to incorperate that into my site when/wherever possible However what are layers? And can you reccomend a good book on webdesign? I dont want a "for dummies!" one cause I know some HTML and CSS but id really like to have a good referince book for the intermediate designer. Thanks in advance Zach
electriic ink 1 Report post Posted May 28, 2006 I used to use this tool. It's called Web Page Maker. It's not free but you download a trial copy of it for nothing and then pay the full $50 (Ł26) later on.I don't know any books however. I've found that if you google enough times you can find all the html/css you'll ever need to know online. Finally, please don't sign your name on the end of your posts. underscores8 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2006 I design websites for businesses and I use Dreamweaver MX '04 and Flash MX '04. Flash is an awesome program to use for advanced sites or sites with animation. I use flash either as a top page title and buttons, or for the entire page. Coffee cup web editor is another webdesign tool that's pretty good, but is made mostly for updating. EZ-Generator is a site maker that uses mostly templates. dreus 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2006 I first learned how to code in HTML after taking a computers class in high school. Back then, we had to make a working website as part of a school assignment. All we were allowed to use was notepad. Dreamweaver / Frontpage were strongly discouraged.A few years later (and forgetting most of the HTML I had once learned), I felt like building a website again. I decided to give Dreamweaver a shot and found it to be really easy to use. Lots of flexibility and nifty features. By switching between coder/designer views, I kind of re-taught myself HTML and using the dual view/features, opened up to a lot more tweaking (not to mention getting more done in less time). I haven't worked with Frontpage so I can't really comment on it.I recently toyed around with CSS but I have not quite figured it out yet. There's a website athttp://www.cssbeauty.com/that showcases a lot of nice looking examples of websites that use CSS. Good luck with your web designing! asyn 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2006 Building websites is my profession. People who tell you to build websites with notepad (or some other plain text editor) do not build websites 40+ hours a week. You just can't build websites fast enough if you have to type every flippin' < > tag.My weapon of choice? Dreamweaver, hands down. Front page is just horrid. Sure, in the WYSIWYG editor it looks beautiful, but as soon as you look at the code it makes you either cry or vomit... or both. Not to mention, I have yet to see a Front Page site look right in anything but IE.Adobe has GoLive, which I've played with some... it seems to be geared to the more media-rich-but-not-much-functionality crowd. Layout is a snap, it works in conjunction with Photoshop wonderfully, but for actually application sites I found it a bit weak.Dreamweaver is the shiznizzy in my book. It supports several programming platforms (ASP, ColdFusion, PHP) pretty seamlessly. Basic functions are prebuilt, like authenticating against a database or retrieving records. Just design the page, click a few buttons and boom, you have a functional interface to your database. Integration with Fireworks is good too, but I don't care for Fireworks. I'm a Photoshop kind of guy.Either way, a good site design package is going to cut your development time 60-70% easily. It's not "cheating" and doesn't show a lack of experience, it means your time is better spent doing something than trying to type <tr> and <td> over and over and over. michaelper22 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2006 The best free thing you can get is Nvu, but there is no substitute for Dreamweaver.I would tend to agree with you. Nvu is a pretty decent HTML editor (from my limited experience with it, about 5 minutes). The best part about it is the price - there is none (for the uneducated folks out there, it's free). But Dreamweaver stands out from the pack. It has a well justified price tag, since it has so many tools for site design and development. I hear that it supports ASP.Net, PHP, ASP, ColdFusion, Flex and a bunch of other formats. I wish I could get Dreamweaver, but for now I'll stick with Mambo (leave that for another topic). Plenoptic 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2006 I use Dreamweaver as well. I used the 30 day trial a while back and ended up buying the thing because I liked it so much. It does a lot of the coding for you. You just type in the attribute and it has an autocomplete to help you out. It also shows when an error made but changing the color of the text. If you want to make a form it helps you out with that too by asking you the info you want and it codes it for you. Really helpful and I like it a lot. AlanDS 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2006 Earlier, I used notepad for designing purposes. Later I used Frontpage. But due the incompatiable coding system of Frontpage, I learned Dreamweaver. Its not easy to design websites using dreamweaver but you will get a good standard coding. Anyways WebPage maker is also a good website design software for newbies
