Domain Names im confused

i dont no if tis is in the right place but i think it isi want to get a donain name for my website i was going to get it off domain.com but i dont understand how they work,is it i register the domain name and then i can go to my cpannel (when i get a hosting account) and add it from there or how does it work i need help thanks

Very commonly asked question. Please do a search before actually posting. but anyway it works like this.You sign up for the domain name by filling out all the information required. After you have done that it will give you a login Id or username... As well as a password to log in. Once you sign up and pay and finish the forums and everything... You could log into the domain Control Panel... Not trap 17 cpanel but the control panel of the domain. Over there you should be able to find the option to change what is called the "Nameservers" this basically directs your site.So lets say your website is hosted at trap 17 you would simply change the name servers from your control panel tons1.trap17.comandns2.trap17.comIf there is a 3 and 4 just leave them blank because only 1 and 2 is needed I think.Once you have changed the name servers from your domain control panel you could now go and enter your web hosts cpanel. After you enter your hosting Cpanel click on Park Domains and click on Add domain.Add the domain you registered by simply typing it inside the box and save it.Now wait a bit and when you go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ it should go to your website.Domains are paid yearly, I suggest you use Godaddy.com since they are having a domain sale and they offer excellent support by both phone and email. Just amazing service, I always buy my domain from there... as for domains.com I have never used them so I could not judge.Good luck.

so that mean's if i got a domain my whole site would be http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and if i ever wanted to change to paid hosting all i need to do is disconect my domain from Xisto and from the commtrol pannel in mydomain and then just move it to my new host.

and would the cpannel be under mysite.trap17.com:2082 or mysite.com:2082

If you ever choose to move hosts, all you'd have to do is change the nameservers to those of your new host and tell your new host what your domain is. It is not necessary to change the domain on your old host because your nameservers aren't connected with that host anymore.

You cPanel url will always be http://www.mydomain.com/ regardless of what host you have.

so that means that if i alrady have a website and the cpannel is mysite.trap17.com:2082 after i add the domain it would become mysite.com:2082 coolit will probably take a long time to get used to tho lol
