Here's my top list of what can make a website look very ugly and drive me off it:

1. Unreadable text or text that "burns your eyes"
Yellow letters on a black background? Purple text on a ping background? DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! The CONTENTS of your site is the most important part of all! If I can't read that, what am I supposed to do with your website? Scroll down and look at the pretty pictures?

2. Unnecessary GIF animations
Why the heck do you need a HUGE "E-mail me" GIF animation next to your e-mail address??? What's up with the weird "back" gif animation that takes allot of time to load? You dont need it! If a visitor wants to go back he/she will click the Back button in their browser. If he/she wants to e-mail you, your address is already displayed for them, right? (they can recognize a @ sign by themselves)

3. Counters
Do you really like to show your visitors the stats of your site? Why would they EVEN CARE about it? If you want to keep an eye out on your stats lately, hide the counter, or simply use a non-aggressive one (small, text based and placed on the bottom of the page, or on any place where it won't get in the visitor's way)

4. JPG pictures that are not optimized for the web
There it is - a small JPG picture... And why is it loading so long??? What's that? You saved a JPG image with a 100% quality? Does anybody even notice the image quality on a web page? A small decrease in JPG quality can make your images way smaller while keeping their quality at an acceptable level. Only make high-quality JPG's for your site's header, but make sure that everything else isn't that big.

5. The famous "ENTER site" pages
Cool, I'm on your site, I entered it already! Why would I want to enter it again? It's like having two front doors combined on your house! If you like to display any messages to your visitors, make them visible on the home page of your site.

6. Alert dialogs
"Hi! I'm Joe! Welcome to my site! You can e-mail me at xxx@xxx.com". So, why did your welcome message just popup on my face when entering your site in the form of "WARNING! YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG!"? I mean, the warning icon combined with the requirement of clicking on the "OK" button to continue is not a very good welcome, is it? Use alerts for alerting! (e.g. You entered an invalid e-mail address)

7. JavaScript effects
A clock next to my mouse? A bunch of dots following my mouse? So, instead of moving my eyeball a bit down and aiming it at the bottom-right corner of my screen in order to find out what time is it, I have to look at the freaking clock that is following my mouse cursor! I'll tell you what: When my wife is having a baby, and I'm walking around nervously the hospital hallways back and forth, I won't keep my eyes of the wall clock, OK?

8. Crappy flash intros
"Welcome to my site! *TRANSITION* Made by Mr. xxxx *TRANSITION* Click ENTER to enter the site *TRANSITION*." So, you want me to take a look at your weak animation skills or having to watch your message text "blast off" until I get the "Enter site" link? Sorry, not gonna happen. (Note: Something like this, combined with allot of awful, annoying and low-quality sounds, can take a very long time to load, and is an even deadlier cocktail for your visit counter!)

9. MIDI background music
Gee, I would really like to meet the guy who made it possible for users to stick in their own MIDI background music that the author of the site is probably hooked-on. I simply don't get the point! If your site is somewhat similar to http://www.disney.com/ or you are making a site for your garage band, you can may insert sounds inside your website. But when I say sounds, I DON'T mean MIDI files or music that takes a long time to load and eventually drives your visitors off the site!

10. And finally... ADVERTISING
A few banners won't hurt. But pop-ups, pop-unders, fake windows falling down on the center of my screen, HUGE banners or too much of them can really drive your visitors crazy! Google AdSense should be quite enough. Using a "FREE SMILEYS" banner on every corner of your page will take allot of time to load and will even decrease the usability of your site. Here's a tip: No matter how many aggressive ads, ads that are not related with your site's contents, pop-ups or pop-unders you place on your page, they won't make the user click on them if they are not interested in them, or if they are annoyed by it! If I took a scoop full of vanilla ice cream and served it to you in a bowl, you would eat it, right? But if I started to wave it around your face and dip it in your nose, you would think twice before putting it in your mouth!

BTW: If anybody wants to take a look at the worlds worst website, here it is:

Ah yes, don't get me started...I hate pop-ups, the few that manage to get past firefox'es defenses are annoying as hell. Ticks me off majorly. I don't even like the 'good' pop-ups with site information and such, If you want to tell me something, do it on the page, don't pop up and make a deal out of it (then I have to allow pop-ups for your site just to reach your "Contact Information" piece. Those 88x31 adds I love, they're nice and small, and allow you to show your graphics expertise without oversized renders and unecessary button-pushing. I'd consider it more of a challenge to create a decent small button, than a 500x150 signature (no offense, I have major 'spect (respect) for you signature designers, because ya'll have the patience (and the time) to work with Photoshop. But I digress, you can show more skill, and put more little buttons on one website, than with oversized banners.Banner-ads, they're alright, As long as they're not the terribly annoying 'Shoot the monkey and win a free i-pod' things, with the constant sounds, that wake up the whole house when I'm surfing late at night. (Gotta turn off those speakers) If they're not too flashy, and don't do the alternating colours of annoyance thing (pink, yellow, bright green) flashing. Then they don't annoy me so much.Enter pages, I understand them on some sites, as disclaimers and such to let you know that either :A. Objectionable/Questionable material lies heirin, and if you have a problem with it, then leave now, or forever hold your peace.B. Direct little children from Porn sites. Those are good enter pages. But when you have a site about your vacation to Hawaii, and you are just learning HTML and Javascript, you don't need a enter/exit page, it annoys the crap out of me then.Un-Optimized images give me headaches also, When I spend more than 12 odd seconds to pass loading all your images, something is majorly wrong (Cable speed: 4mbps down) And I hate it even worse when I'm forced to use IE for some odd reason, and I can't do anything till that last oversized image loads. Turns out it's a picture of you and your mom at the beach in Hawaii, that you took at Max Resolution, and failed to Optimize. Annoys me, but doesn't make me want to flame the owners.I'll post some more when I think of any ;)..Later- Panda

i think basic things we all hate. Nasty bright colors that hurt you eyes and make you strain to look at things or focus on something. Even small text is annoying. I don't feel like making my font or resolution any biiger while i'm trying to read. Ads and pops are annoying too. I hate when you have to click Close Ad to actually close the ad and load the page. Pop up blockers don't block those things. they're like inpage popups which are just as annoying as the normal ones that pop up blockers do block. I also hate the ones that want you to install something than you can view the page or click to vote and then be able to view the page. Its just forcing others. I just click it and close it and go into the page. I don't care to vote for site that makes me. But I'll vote voluntarily for Xisto, lol. Then last for me would be sites with lots of animations. That slows down the page.

Some stuff I really HATE in websites is poor design and lack of content. I hate coming to an ugly website. And I hate websites that don't have enough content.I ALSO HATE websites that have poor design but 100's or pages of content. I also really hate when content on a website is to complex and incorrect.Another thing I don't like in websites is when they open a new web page. Because it just takes the attention away from your website.but anyway as long as the website looks good and has good content in my book its a GREAT website.

what i really hate is web sites that promize a lot of things, such as content, downloads, media, and etc... when i see at google descxription, i think that finally i found it, but what happends, you are redirected to a poor site asking for your credit card, or a site with links to other sites like this, and this appear to haven't end, and then i would like to hit my screen with the keyboard, throw a tub of water over the cpu, and cut the internet connection cable, and i'm not spamming!!! ;)

Is there a way to make new windows come open in a tab instead if you are using Firefox? That would be great!

It's under options if you've got the Tabbrowser Preferences extension installed.

Thats why, I want a freewebhosting where I have NO ADS..... and maybe I can add my own instead... but with ads... I would only go as far as banner ads. Thats it.No popup ads...No redirecting stuff...No "You must click yes to enter" which tries to install something...Sure, I may try to make a small $ with my website (If I can get one first...) but I would do it by donations and/or banner ads only. Thats it. And in return, I would be offering free entertainment and stuff like my computer games I build. ;) Plus, with the money, I would indeed, go into paid webhosting..... get more bandwidth and space..... a dot com domain or some sort....I have a excellent plan in my head indeed..... but I been wondering if I can make it all possible.....

I hate those website , which makes you register. Even after registration there is very little use no personalisation...It is just that they want to use User authentication in their website...

Adverts and pop-ups. Especiall those ads/sites that make you either press "skip" or you have to wait 30 seconds etc before a pic shows or before it redirects you etc. Very Very Annoying IMO

I hate sites that put up :

-bright colors to make it "attracting" to the eyes.

Its attracting but NOT in a good way. Its ANNOYING!!!

-pop up ads

This kind of stuff is just evil. Couldn't they just put ad banners, or text ads?!

-Stupid Private Places With Signs That Says something like :

>>>DO NOT ENTER!!!

>>>CLICK AT YOUR OWN RISK

>>>PRIVATE

>>>NOTHING HERE YET

>>>(something here) [effect-putting you through a javascript with popup promts saying...ha...ha...you've...been...fooled...into...coming...here...etc...]

>>>etc...

Why put those up these stupid places when you obviously don't want people going into them? (with the exception of the javascript one.)

-Annoying trials of pages!

There are some places with totally useless pages that ask you questions like :

>>>are you sure you want to enter?

>>>please turn back if you do not want to enter.

>>>etc

-Sites that never update.

:) I hate lazy peoples. (YES even the guy that runs the page that I have homepaged.) Why put up a site if you're never going to update it? I understand if you had some emergency or a vacation. But three to four months without an update is rediculous.

-Useless updates.

I hate the people that put up millions of useless updates like :

>>>Hi, we're not dead yet!

>>>This the admin speaking telling you to not leave us!

>>>I got nothing to say...this is a pointless update.

>>>The next update on our project will come sooner or later, please check back later.

-People that are illiterate.

>>>Hi, tis is (insert name). Whasup ppl?! Welcome to mah site!

I'm sure you understand...

OMG, theres soooooooo much more places that I hate so much, that it makes me so mad.

I guess that the most hated thing about web sites are pop ups. Everyone is used to closing it the second it pops up, mainly because they have been exploited by advertising and annoying stuff like that. One other thing that didnt show up here are the flash sites or any other site that takes up the whole screen like if it were something really important kind of like if it wanted to take over your computer or something. Basically I think its all about force, a website tries to force you to look at some banner or something and then comes the pop up, or the full screen or anything else that does things without your consent.
