no problem i know a bit about what to look for in a computer lol..but yeah raptors pwn... if i had the money id get a raptor for my personal computer and raid it with anohter one for backup...but anyways you really dont need a gpx card at all my remote into it...
-
Comcasts i dont think cares... otherwise sonic.net really dsont care my friend had them and have his own server and knew people who used all of there 6 mbit connection for months on end and they never did anything... so just look around sbc will care i know that *BLEEP* aol and thats about all i know of and all the dial ups are stupid... and if you plan to host a server on dial up im sorry to say your plain stupid.. Allright where to start lol... 1. Cost depends on how many servers you want (btw i run my personal computer 24/7/365 so yeah... my parents dont yell at me cause well they leave theres on as well...) Most copanies have 2- a couple hundred depending on what they are doing... normaly they have 1 for email server and another for the site and a backup for each of these... at the client site i describe below we installed 10 servers i think and there were 10 more in the mail lol... and this was for a company called wine.com so just to give you an idea) 2. Another thing is are you hosting the server or you letting someone else soruce it because that also can cost more or less depedning which way you go. My dad and i have installed servers at a client site (data center: lots and lots of computers... they have backup generators aglor and a *BLEEP* load of ac lol the room is about 40- 50 *f and you have server racks, nice network connections and dedicated power lines all backed up on generators) either way it costs a bit of money to run them here but they cover power and bandwidth those sorts of details but it can get a little costly if your just starting out 3. How many hits a day are you expecting The more people you have visiting your site determins how much bandwidth you need (ill use this site as an example the bandwidth for this site is HUGE because look at all the people posting a day probably about a gig or more a day... while in the hosting accounts they give out we get 5 gig a month so put that into prespective) a big site requires lots of bandwidth 4. What is the site going to be doing If you are just making a site for a clan or something simple like that you dont need that much room, if you making a site like this where EACH person has there own profile you ned a lot more not only that but to offer hosting you need a couple terra bytes... 5. Domain pretty simple... just get a domain to forward to the ip of the server... thats about al i can think of atm... anyways you can go cheap on the server or expensive... however if you are doing a server look into raptor drives 15000 rpms just totaly owns on servers however your limited to i think 200 gigs now a drive... but they are very exelent for servers and or main gaming computer hds You can easily get a server running for around a grand but it all depends on what its going to do... for a grand your looking at a pretty simple rig... single processor (most servers have 2 -4 up to around 30+ dont exactly know...) id get a core 2 duo or sorts get a good mobo with lots of ram space and get about 4 gigs ram if you can ... (around 600 bucks start with 2 and upgrade later to more so spend about 300 and get 2 gigs and spend another 300 down the road to get 4 gigs total) You really dont need a gpx card but if you really want one get a pos 50 $ one the computers not for gaming... its for file hosting type things... the gpx card really wont matter its just to see wahts on the computer i guess... you can also remote into them... get a few gbs... lol (id go around 200+ gbs if not more in raptors... depending on waht your doing if its for one site go with 200 and upgrade if you need to to get more) and thats about it that you need in a server cpu/ram/hds/mobo and or course a case...

yeah if your sticking with amd at least get one towards the top thats all i cna say im not really a fan of either im just going with which one has the better productas of right now intel does with there duos and soon to be cuadros so yeah anyways its personal preferance so feel free to get your amd stuff just get a dual core it helps ALOT

Allright so im looking at buying a computer (well building) to do the same exact things as you want first go intel they are currently at the top and they are afordable if you want to and can wait till after xmas and prices should drop due to the cuadros and scoop up a duo. for a graphics card id sujest looking at the 7900 GTO from nvidia its an awsome card and if you need more from it its overclockable anyways heres waht i want to buy its about 1003 us $ so yeah lol CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 ( you can overclock it to 3 ghz or more if you really need to) ~ 183 US http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=64 MOBO: ABIT AB9 Pro Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard ~ 149 US http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=61 GPX: eVGA 512-P2-N573-AR Geforce 7900GTO ~ 253 US http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=51 RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) ~ 132 US http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=68 PSU: Antec TruePower 2.0 TRUECONTROL II-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply ~ 100 US http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=73 HD: Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive ~ 75 US http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=74 CASE http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=61 its all up to you on a case its what ever your like... its a nice build case, id look for a case w/o a psu tho TOTAL COST ~ 892 + what ever the case is A few notes about the stuff above its a overclocking machine if you really want to get it up to 1.1k upgrade to a better cpu and ram (id go with more ram if i were you tho so yeah...) CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=7 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=53 anyways this should do pretty much eveything out there atm and then some, id wait till the new 8series cards come out and get one of the new gpx cards with dx 10 ready (the 8 series) they will be newer and cost a bit more so id just stick with waht ive listed above and get a dx 10 card instead of the 7900 GTO feel free to pm me if you have any questions otherwise tell me what you think lol also PLEASE DONT SKIMP ON THE PSU you need 550 = watts now adays for the new gpxs cards... so SLI the 8series its something crazy like 700 watts i think... so just go with the one i put above and you will be happy i can almost guarentee it

i was talking to my friend today and he was like why...You are in a sense wasting your money becasue if you buy this now by the time vista comes out and DX 10 comes out it will be pretty much obsolete...If you lucky (depeding on waht you do) you may get a good year out of this computer with games (that are out RIGHT NOW), that computer is definatly not anything you would be using 3d art programs on such as maya or other programs like that. That computer you are building is ment for older games/ text based stuff nothing that requires alot so look at the future when you are buying somethingReally you should be looking at around 800-1000 $ on a system that will last for 3-5 years maybe more if your luckyjust thought id include this into your thought before you buy italso you cannot really upgrade anything on that board by the time you need to that stuff will be so obsolete it wont be funny... if you were me and w/e lol id get a MOBO that supports DDR2, and has at least 1 pcie slot if not 2 (for sli) also look for the newer stuffIm guessing once the core quardos come out the duos will drop in price a little bit and be more around 100-150 (im guessing) so id wait till the quardos and vista comes out to upgrade or build a new computer (plus after xmas time stores will be wanting to get rid of there old stock for the newer stuff so the prices should also be lower!!!

CRT is the old stuff when people buy new tvs now they are normaly lcd or plasma...but the one thing about the CRT is it has better HD becasue its been around for longer they know how to do more stuff with it unlike lcd and plasma...anyways it should be the way of the past within a few years to 10 at the most id think...

Leaving Your Computer On? - is this good for it?
tdktank59 replied to nickmealey's topic in Software
hes right... all except for the sleep/hibernation modes... those are also bad for your computer becasue what they really do is stop eveything so its just like turning it off but all you have to do is press a button and its back to life... but meh... i just leave it on 24/7 unless im on vacation, or im updating stuff on it lol... -
well looks nice a few things i would change... 1st get an intel core 2 duo its faster than the amd's atm... also you can overclock them like a mofo http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=64 2nd get this mobo its cheap but good http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=61 3rd get the nvidia 7900 GTO it is the best card for the price on the market 4th maybe look at a little cheaper of a case http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=61 is a nice case 5th youll need ddr2 ram so might as well get some good stuff to help you overclock... http://www.newegg.com/Common/MessagePage.aspx?MsgCode=-1&ID=68 this is all if you have a bit more money otherwise the system you have there is just fine but seriously you dont need a 100 $ case its a waste of money... im modding my old pos case lol cost me about 20 bucks but is nicely built so ill just add a few more holes and add some lights and a window and itll be awsome

Blue ray will either suceed or fail... and sony will determine this with the ps3... having 50 gbs on one disc could unlock alot of things in the games comming out especialy with the new rendering products in the ps3.Did you know there are a equivilant of 4 graphics processors in the ps3? it is atm the most powerfull graphics card on the market... (only compatible with ps3 tho) anyways...

Allright im looking at upgrading because my computer starting to become stupid... (games are lagging when they shouldnt be... heres what i have now so you can base this for what to sujest to me (i want better lol) CPU: intel[r] 2.8 ghz RAM: 1gig motherboard: intel pos motherboard... (it works for what i have now...) Cdrom: DVD R/W 16x i belive 3x 40 gig hard drives (im going to get at least a 120 gig) GPX: Nvidia Geforece 4ti 4600 (im looking at the ATI 1950x crossfire but thats a little out of my budget... but its an awsome card...) Monitor: 21" (i think its huge...) sun monitor Heres what im looking for and what i need the computer to do: Play games seemlessly (no laging and skiping frames in otherwords...), run Maya Unlimited easily, photoshop stuff as well... (MULTI tasking is a must... as much as possible...) heres what im thinking CPU: i dont know which way to go amd or intel... help me decide give me some reasons to choose one or the other Motherboard: A good one that can last me a few upgrades... (cpu has to fit... lol) Ram: 2 gigs MIN... (w/e type motherboard can handle) Harddrive: 120gb MIN 2 terra wanted lol (but what type of hd should i get (reatively cheep too) Graphics Card: Im looking at the ATI 1950x crossfire but thats out of my budget atm so tell me some others and what they are good for (512mb min on the card... id also like a tv in if possible so tell me how to do this... i want to run my ps2/xbox on my computer monitor... and also does this take away from preformance aspects???) Monitor: I want widescreen casue i watch alot of movies... so tell me some good monitors... rember this machine is also a gaming machine so i need a good response time...) Case: something relatively cheep but looks cool (i like black and red) i want a black case with side window with a cool grill lol with red lights around it i need upgrade room for internal drive slots *BLEEP* the floppy drive slot i never use it anymore... and well at least 2 cdrom drive slots... also has to have good ventalation/fan spots i like fans in my case... my current one has 6-8 cant rember and to lazy to look down lol... Powersupply: Enough to cover eveything above + more so id think a 500-700 watt power supply would be nice? but not sure... rember i want to max out the fan slots in the case so evey spot a fan can go there will be a fan there... so plan for that when helping me here
