  1. I've been reading and thinking a lot about the nature of infinity and particularly how paradoxical it is.Example: there are infinite numbers, however within this set of numbers there are also infinite square numbers. The same principle applies to odd, even and prime numbers. An infinite set within an infinite set. Example: infinity plus one equals infinityExample: there are infinite numbers. there are infinite numbers between 0 and 1.Example ( a worrying one!): if you have infinite income, no matter what income tax is levied at, you pay infinite income tax.The best way to visually think about infinity is to consider any graph which features an asymptote. An asymptote is when a graph approach's a value without ever actually reaching. The graph continues infinitely, but there are also infinite possibilities without the graph reaching the point it is asymptotic to.
  2. This has got to be one of the most marginal takes on Christianity I have yet to see! On top of this you finish with the conclusion "Becuase of this, these two women essintially caused the rise of Christianity and the hatred of the Jews." Firstly, you proclaim a hatred of the Jews. Secondly, you posit all of Christianity to his resurrection. And finally, I just don't see the Roman's kidnapping and brainwashing him....
  3. Very interesting post, thanks. I read an interesting piece about putting an economic value on the rainforest remaining standing as a way for companies to become Carbon Neutral. The only problem is making that economic value equate to a higher value than that of deforrestation for timber or cattle etc.
  4. In the Iranian election both current president Ahmadinejad and opponent Mousavi have both claimed to have won the Iranian election just hours after polls close. Voter turnout was said to be unprecendented. People say its too close to call.I think this result could be a critical moment in world politics. If Ahmadinejad wins I think he'll continue to aggressively pursue a nuclear proliferation program. If Mousavi wins we could see a real change in Iran's relations with the West, Iran could set a precedent for relations between the West and an Islamic Republic.
  5. Infamous street artist Banksy has set up a 'secret' exhibit in a museum in his native Bristol - with only one person knowing about it. It is due to open tomorrow and council officials only found out most of the museums artefacts had been removed - replaced by Banksy's distinctive mash-up of PoMo and urban street art. He had this to say "This is the first show I've ever done where taxpayers' money is being used to hang my pictures up rather than scrape them off." 6. Yeah people who make out that US Presidents are some kind of tyrant is such a fallacy. The US prides itself on freedom of speech and civil liberties - did George Bush or Reagan remove either of these? Maybe to a degree. But the Nazis did it almost completely. Say what you want about the American 2 party system, in my opinion it beats the Nazis one party system hands down.
  7. I think the effects are all about how much you believe in it and how seriously you take. I think it can be relaxing but it is ultimately just similar to a placebo.
  8. I really want Google to start developing an OS!! Well, it doesn't have to be Google I guess...but I just really want someone to start removing Microsofts stranglehold. It's all good and well discussing alternatives but I do not think I am alone in saying there is very little choice in terms of OS.Microsoft have said that their next OS will not ship with Internet Explorer in Europe because of the EU Competition Commissions decision that it was unfair to other developers.
  9. Virgin recently released a 50gb fibre optic broadband over here in the UK...that's what I'm planning to get in my house at Uni next year. Apparently the download speed is actually close to the quote 50gb as well. Well excited to see how it actually fares though! It comes as a package with TV so its difficult to compare price but I think its between 30-50 a month.sorry thats in GBP as well
  10. I think the human population is a VERY specific case when discussing evolution and we shouldn't place too much emphasis on any one species when discussing evolution because lets not forget - this isn't a process that began with Darwin - it had been happening for millions of years and is, arguably, still happening. Humans have far too much influence over populations of other species now. If not evolution, then....intelligent design? (just to blow this wide open!) - source WikiPedia
  11. Yeah it will blatently will. He's almost as marketable as David Beckham now. Apparently he's going to be earning £225k a week! and because hes a foreign national in Spain he'll pay just 5% tax....over here he was paying 50% on most his earnings.
  12. Or maybe a forum for "Music Reviews" specifically that did feature a post count? Reviews of singles, albums or gigs etc
  13. The World Health Organisation today confirmed that the H1N1 strain of swine influenza has become a pandemic. Cases are on the rise in the UK and Australasia, as well as in the Americas where the virus was initially discovered. The virus was previously only an epidemic but the sharp rise in cases across different continents meant the WHO had to declare it a pandemic. The virus is endemic to the swine population and so I don't think this is the last we'll see of it. We just got to hope H5N1 (avian flu) doesn't return and mutate with H1N1 or all the jabs being produced around the world would become useless.
  14. Manchester United confirmed today they have accepted an offer for £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. Given the current economic climate I feel that this is an absolutely insane amount. Especially as they splashed nearly £60m on Kaka just a few days ago, and are said to be closing in on David Villa for around £30m.How has football become so inflated and what can be done to stop it?

  16. England have basically lost. They're batting first and I just left on 88/7. I doubt they'll even reach a ton! They were 4/2 at one point!I think you may have called it right k_nitin!
  17. Yeah, I've never used one before either but I've had good things and am considering getting one. Anyone confirm how durable they are compared to normal keyboards?
  18. Yeah I've been watching! All I can say for Australia is "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA". There Captain Ricky Ponting told the media "It would be a disaster if we went out. We would have to spend 10 days in Leicster before the start of the Ashes!" The next day Australia get knocked out.Queue a bad Sun headline "10 G'days out in Leicster". Ah poor Aus.
  19. Thanks for answering my question. I did pick up on the environment element of it with your use of words like "Terra" (referring to Earth?) "fertilizing", "charcoal" (less about natural environment, more our interaction with it, but on the same theme) and "harvest". I also really admire your admission that "I am not entirely positive what this poem is supposed to be about (yet)" whereas other people may have tried to blag a general theme. It doesn't matter if your poem isn't supposed to be about anything in particular as long as you don't claim it is.I see your comment on progression (or, as you put it, lack thereof) coming through especially in the "mental" verse with your reference to "we shall remain uneducated; the ignorant .. who lazily tread this well beaten path" is particularly poignant.
  20. The United Kingdom's position within the European community is something that is widely being debated in the media at the moment, probably because of the ongoing European Parliament elections (results are due by Sunday night). On the back of the economic crisis and the recent MP expenses scandal (a newspaper systematically released stories day by day that revealed what politicians had been spending 'expenses' they are entitled to on - they range from duckhouses to moat cleaning as well as claims of tax evasion - BUT this isn't what I wanted this to be about!!!) Suffice to say, people are pretty outraged by politicians and this combined with the ongoing debate regarding immigration given the EU's open borders has meant that a lot of parties ran in the aforementioned European elections on a manifesto of "upping the draw bridge" to Europe.Parties like No2EU, UKIP and even the BNP (an extreme far-right party) have made significant gains on the basis of a disillusionment with mainstream politics and politicians. However, I think the argument to pull the UK out of Europe is fundamentally flawed. Firstly, the EU currently contains approximately 500m people in what is called the 'Single Market' because of the free movement of the factors of production across borders - including labour. This represents such a significant opportunity for businesses that it can not be understated in my opinion. Consumers also benefit as they can import European goods cheaper. Secondly, I feel there are issues of overlapping social consensus that merit pan-European law. I feel this includes issues most fundamentally like discrimination on the basis of race, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation or disability. I also feel pan-European law is required on issues such as welfare and rights for workers.Thirdly, while many people complain of too many immigrants coming to the UK especially from the Accession Countries (essentially the Eastern European former satellite states) they forget that many British people have taken the opportunity to go and work or live across European in it's entirety. Finally, I feel that there is a definite need for a European solution to climate change (you could argue global, but its much more difficult to coordinate), international crime and the global economic slowdown. In this globalizing world an isolationist approach will get you nowhere
  21. But we're not all philosophers. Darwin destroyed the 'average' man's conception of the creationism. I do not think it is unfair to say that creationism was widely accepted before Darwin's theory, nor do I think it is unfair to say that it is NOT widely accepted any more. The Enlightenment probably did play a major role in this too, but I think Darwin's theory was definitely a key player in shifting society from religion to science. The emerging scientific method and finally industrialisation were the final nails in the coffin as far as I'm concerned.Yeah, I know he was not the one to actually coin the term "survival of the fittest" but it is probably the best way to sum up his theory, especially when teaching it to a younger audience who are only just beginning to engage with the evolution.
  22. Firefox Or Internet Explorer, that is the question...I believe the answer is.......Google Chrome!Sleek, stylish, good bookmarking, easy integrated downloads, tabs, address bar is a google search! I'm not going back to firefox or IE to be honest!!
  23. The first two don't contradict, they go hand in hand. The fact populations stay the same year to year means that not all animals reproduce successfully and it was from this that Darwin concluded survival of the fittest. He didn't literally kill religion, but he forced them to relook at the events in Genesis and regarding creation and start to view them as metaphors as oppose to taking them literally.
  24. The premises I provide are support of his theory, not specifically how it disproves creationism. I think Darwin's own views on religion, and the turmoil he suffered whilst writing, were particularly interesting.
  25. Darwin's book 'On the Origin of Species' shook the world. His theory of evolution by natural selection could be used to explain the eternal mystery of where we all come from, and why we're here. Darwin's idea is premised by the following ideas; His theory states that the most favourable traits will be passed on and the weaker will die out "survival of the fittest" as it often dubbed. My question is this, to what extent is evolution directly juxtaposed to creationism? Is there any common ground?
