hm, i used avast for 2 years and it never let me down. it's free, it has relatively good scan result and virus cleaning.btw, some people don't like its GUI, But i can bear with that. Some others say that its consume lots of your system performance, but i think kaspersky and bitdefender takes more system performance than avast.just another opinion

Disable Autoplay In Xp To Reduce The Impact Of Usb Virus
akashi replied to takerraj's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I think autoplay and autorun is different, and (I think) mostly computers are infected by autorun function, and not by the autoplay function. Autoplay is a feature which you can automatically view/listen files inside your removable drives. winblows detects your drive, and determines whether it contains viewable/playable files or not, and display autoplay dialog. But in autorun, winblows detects your drive, and if it has autorun.inf, windows will launch executable commands inside autorun.inf automatically, even you don't want to launch it. CMIIW. If the virus is inside a viewable / playable file (or files extension), than disabling autoplay doesn't prevent it because you will someday play / view it from explorer or other application.BTW, you can't disable autorun by disabling autoplay, so basically, disabling autoplay isn't a good way to prevent / minimize virus thread.Installing antivirus and anti-spyware is the best way to prevent virus threads. And now, you can get free antivirus and anti-spyware, so that you don't even need to disable autoplay and autorun to make your PC safer. Antivirus still check your files even you open it using autoplay function, so you don't need to worry :oAnd there isn't option called "system" under "administrative template" in my xp. Yordan, could you check this too? BTW, i'm using winblows XP professional 2002 SP3.I suggest this tutorial's title should change to "Disable Autoplay In XP Personal (maybe) version 200* SP*" -
Bing! New Search Engine From Microsoft A smart decision Engine
akashi replied to BCD's topic in Websites and Web Designing
i'm a google fan too. google is not just an engine search, that's i like the most. you can get tons of feature from google i've tried this site. looks like we still have to wait untill bing crawled websites in internet. with google, you can get lots of result, though this also mean that you have to put another keywords so that you'll exactly get what you want to. bing's search result is lesser so that may be you won't get what you search. That just an opinion. BTW, what's the differences between bing and live search? -
I believe Handbrake has command line interface. Other encoders are mencoder and ffmpeg. Most probably, you can install them from your distro's repository. Just visit the site and learn their howtos. You can their site or googling to get some tutorials too.

I don't understand the difference between Mozilla Firefox and Firefox. Could you explain more the differences between them, because AFAIK firefox is the "mozilla firefox". Am I right guys?

why don't you try some CLI encoders? GUI applications are easier to use, but you could learn a little bit about CLI encoders, maybe you'll like it.beside, you can have batch operations or create script that automatically convert your media so you don't need to set the options again and again.

It isn't impossible spencer. We're talking about M$. Maybe someday they'll create "Bing SP3" ;pMaybe we also have to install WGA and other M$ Winbl0w$ fixes before we can start using this search engine's features ;pI really hope M$ seriously develop this web, not like what've they done in the past with that "longhorn" projects.BTW, does this search engine is vulnerable to virus and worm attacks? Anybody knows? -

I just wonder, would we get BSOD or Error in 0x088abcde0. Please contact your browser developer Or maybe our computer goes restart after we press "Search"..... I just wonder -
As you've already known, now we can sync google calendar with mozilla sunbird and ical (and thunderbird too, using lightning and another addon) through webDAV. I did tried this feature using thunderbird, and it's really nice. You can sync your task, events, etc, and let people know. I also used it to sync events recorded in my school PC with my home PC. (Actually i used evolution in my home PC, and it works, though google guys said that it only supports for ical and sunbird). The problem is, after i switched to KDE, i want to use Korganizer as my personal organizer, but i still can't figure how to sync KOrganizer with google calendar. Anyone has luck? (except using thunderbird in KDE, of course) Please share with me guys.KDE newbie ;p

If I have to choose between linux and winblows, then i'll choose linux. My PC got freeze several times when I used Winblows. Also, i had to install lots of security apps which made my PC slower >_< BTW, I really want to try Mac once, especially OSX one. It has nice appearance, nice applications, and maybe less BSOD :lol:Now, i'm using Kubuntu now. The desktop is nice, it has lots of good apps, though it's a little bit buggy. Maybe Ubuntu developer is busy developing Ubuntu and forgot that they have to develop Kubuntu and Xubuntu ones ;p

It's quite different. The layout engine (FF's using gecko, Opera's using Presto), the features (addon, theme, customization), etc. You should try it too and find a browser which suits your need. You can start to search the comparison of web browser, try some of best ones, and decide the right one for you. Just try it and see the differences by yourself.

I used Gnome for about 2 years in my Ubuntu. It has a nice view, and the best thing is, fully supported by Ubuntu Team. But then I heard some good things on Kubuntu (KDE type of Ubuntu). I installed it and I really love it. I also love the packages included in Kubuntu desktop. The problem is, I just feel that Ubuntu team gives more attention on Ubuntu development than Kubuntu or Xubuntu. I got a problem when I tried to install SKIM for Kubuntu though I didn't got the problem in Ubuntu. Also, it was a little unstable in the first time. Dunno why.For me, Kubuntu (KDE) has a slight (?) better performance than Ubuntu (Gnome), but also a little bit buggy

I've used lots of browsers before, such as IE, FF, opera, maxthon, greenbrowser, avantbrowser, k-meleon, iceweasel, swiftfox, swiftweasel, and now i'm using Konqueror.FF is high customizable. That is i like the most. But as you know, FF had (or has) memory leak problem. And after that i used "a tweaked FF (?)" called swiftfox. It's just like FF, just tweaked a little bit by using some parameter when compiling it. Then i moved to swiftweasel which is "a tweaked iceweasel".. FYI, iceweasel just like FF which is developed by Debian programmer. Now i'm using Konqueror cuz it has faster load time (integrated into KDE on my newly installed Kubuntu) though it's not as customizable as FF, but i don't have any problem with that. It has its own ad block, so i don't need to worry about the ads. But to tell the truth, swiftweasel is the most i loved For you who's using XP, try k-meleon. It really fast and simple. But sometimes there still pages which you can't view in k-meleon, that's the problem.

Dvd Playback On Jaunty DVD playback error on Ubuntu jaunty
akashi replied to akashi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
The problem is solved After spent an hour browsing, googling, and checking synaptic, (maybe) i found the answer. When i search anything about dvd in synaptic, i found a package called libdvdcss2. This packages is essential to play encrypted DVD. And I just thought that this could solve my problem. I install that package and voila, i can play dvd again. I still don't understand why i could play dvd when i was using iintrepid.BTW, for anyone who have problem with Jaunty dvd playback, could you try this and then tell me whether this solve your problem or not.Cheers -
the reasons are :1. don't need to worry about virus and spyware2. free3. don't wanna spend my money for M$4. don't need to press ctrl+alt+del5. dont wanna see BSOD anymore..... i don't wanna buy an OS which make me buy another security + performance tune up software.. after switching to linux, i do learn a lot about computer. not just click here and there and then panic because my comp become freeze

Dvd Playback On Jaunty DVD playback error on Ubuntu jaunty
akashi replied to akashi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
yep, but the link is dead..btw, i do understand that DVD playback is restricted. When i used intrepid, i did need to install gstreamer which is part of medibuntu package, which i'm sure you've already know about this.the problem is, when i upgraded it to Jaunty using ubuntu update system, suddenly i couldn't play DVD. Does ubuntu upgrade (to Jaunty) remove the ability to playback dvd, or there are packages i need to install so that i can play dvd in jaunty? -
i think you should install gstreamer and other restricted extras. As you know, ubuntu doesn't support playback for MP3 caused by patent and copyright restriction problem. But still you can install plugins which isn't included in ubuntu installation. Maybe this will help https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats cheers

I've already search in this forum and the other forum, but i still haven't got the answer. After I upgraded my ubuntu (Intrepid to Jaunty) i can't watch dvd anymore. When I inserted DVD, it got mounted and i can see it at my desktop. But when i try to open / play it, totem says that i don't have the right permission to open it... what it's differences with intrepid? i didn't have this problem when i used intrepid.Btw, things i've tried :1. sudo totem -> didn't work... seems we can't run totem from terminal.. it doesn't have dbus access.. don't know what it means.2. reinstall totem, vlc, gstreamer, and other plugins -> same errordoes anyone have the solution?

what do you think of puppy linux? btw, does DSL have office suite inside it? i didn't see one in http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ . My opinion (based on comparison at distrowatch.com) is that although DSL is smaller than puppy linux, but that is normal because puppy has Goffice, gimp, inkscape etc inside it. And puppy's firefox is newer than DSL's. You can also see that some of (or maybe most of) packages on puppy are newer then DSL's.. you can also see other distros there, compare them, and choose one which suits with your need
